Scorecard
Two bowlers who have been injured for most of the last two seasons helped Hampshire to their first County Championship win of the season and inflicted a serious blow to Durham’s title hopes. With two innings forfeited in the rain-ruined match at Chester-le-Street, Durham were set what looked a generous target of 276 in 82 overs. However, the title hopefuls were all out for 225 with Dimitri Mascarenhas taking six wickets for 62 runs and Kabir Ali 3 for 69.Although he was playing only his third championship game in two years following his Achilles injury, Hampshire must have sensed conditions were tailor-made for Mascarenhas when they declared on 275 for 7. The former England one-day allrounder’s medium pace always proves very effective in the north-east whenever there is any moisture around and in his first eight overs he took 3 for 11.Although Michael Di Venuto had less than his share of the strike, he had faced 23 balls when he tried to cut a ball which was moving into him and edged to second slip to depart for 1. In the last over before lunch Mark Stoneman padded up to a swinging delivery from Mascarenhas and was leg before wicket. Then, straight after the break, Gordon Muchall played back to a ball which skidded on to him and lost his off stump. Will Smith made 31 before edging Ali to first slip and Durham were rocking on79 for 5 before Dale Benkenstein and Phil Mustard revived them with a stand of 45.Both batsmen were on 28 when Benkenstein drove at left-arm seamer Chris Wood and Hampshire’s acting captain Jimmy Adams took a fine catch high to his left at wide mid-off.With Callum Thorp coming to the crease there were still 45 overs left and survival was not really an option. He took 10 off Wood’s next over, prompting the introduction of legspinner Imran Tahir.Thorp hit him for two fours in each of his second and third overs to move to 29 off 22 balls at tea and with Mustard on 36 Durham were 163 for 6, still needing 113 off 37 overs. The target was down to 88 when Thorp departed for 43, replicating Ian Blackwell’s dismissal by trying to pull a short ball wide of leg stump from Ali, only to glove it to wicketkeeper Michael Bates. In the next over Mitch Claydon drove at Mascarenhas and also edged to Bates, who completed his maiden first-class half-century in the morning. It was as good as over for Durham when Mustard fell for 56, cutting low to Michael Carberry at backward point. Finally Rushworth hooked Mascarenhas to long leg and Durham had taken only two points from the match. They lead by eight points from Lancashire, but their three title rivals can all overtake them next week, when Durham are not in action.Hampshire took 18 points but are still 32 adrift of safety and faced an unwelcome coach trip to Aberdeen after the match for a Clydesdale Bank 40 League match against Scotland, knowing the ground had been far too wet to stage today’s game against Leicestershire.

Taylor cameo secures Leicestershire win

England Lion James Taylor put his name in the frame for the forthcoming one-day series against Sri Lanka with a match-winning cameo for Leicestershire against Derbyshire

England Lion James Taylor put his name in the frame for the forthcoming one-day series against Sri Lanka with a match-winning cameo for Leicestershire against Derbyshire in the Friends Life t20 match at Derby. Taylor scored an unbeaten 15 from seven balls, including an overhead scoop for six off pace bowler Steffan Jones, as the Foxes celebrated a five-wicket victory with five balls to spare.Australian allrounder Andrew McDonald’s 62 off 45 balls and Abdul Razzaq’s 40 from 25 set the stage for Taylor to take his side past the Falcons’ 160 for 4 – in which Martin Guptill led the scoring with 44.The Falcons had lost Wes Durston in the second over when he chopped Harry Gurney into his stumps and the Foxes should have removed Guptill cheaply three overs later. Guptill was on 10 when he drove Razzaq to mid-off – but Matthew Hoggard misjudged the catch and the ball went through his hands to the boundary. The Leicestershire skipper had plenty of time to reflect on that as the New Zealander batted for another 11 overs and, with Chesney Hughes and Wayne Madsen, laid the platform for a late onslaught. Hughes scored 22 off 20 balls before he was stumped charging Claude Henderson and Madsen’s 28 from 26 balls included a scoop sweep for six off McDonald.Guptill hit six fours in his 44 which came off 43 balls before he pulled Hoggard to deep midwicket in the 16th over – and Madsen went in the next when he miscued a pull at White. With three overs left, Derbyshire were still short of a competitive total but Garry Park and Ross Whiteley plundered 44 from the last 23 balls. Whiteley drove Wayne White over extra cover for six but the pair ran hard between the wickets to set a challenging target which looked even better when Tim Groenewald yorked Josh Cobb with the fourth ball of the Foxes’ reply.Guptill plunged full-length at deep midwicket to send back Jacques du Toit in the fifth over but McDonald kept the Foxes in the hunt, reaching his fifty by cutting Hughes for his sixth four. McDonald’s excellent innings ended when he drove back a return catch in the 16th but Razzaq drove two big sixes before he was bowled by Jon Clare. However, Taylor silenced the home fans when he drove Jones to the cover boundary and then flipped a full toss over the wicketkeeper for six – leaving White to strike the winning blow against his former county.

Internacional anuncia a contratação do lateral-esquerdo Zeca, ex-Santos

Jayasuriya, Vaas out of SL World Cup squad

World Cup-winning veterans Sanath Jayasuriya and Chaminda Vaas were left out of Sri Lanka’s final World Cup squad of 15 players named on Friday by the national selection committee headed by Aravinda de Silva. The squad consists of 11 members who represented Sri Lanka in the three-match one-day series in Australia, which the visitors won 2-1, giving them their first ODI series win in Australia. The one surprise was that left-arm spinner Rangana Herath was picked ahead of offspinner Suraj Randiv. Both Jayasuriya and Vaas had been named in the provisional squad of 30, and there was speculation that either one of the two players would make it to the final team. They had indicated to the selectors that they would want to play in another World Cup before announcing their retirements from international cricket. Both players have retired from Test cricket but have been playing one-day and Twenty20 cricket. Vaas last played an ODI in August, 2008, while Jayasuriya last played a 50-over game for Sri Lanka in December, 2009.The only surviving member of the 1996 World Cup winning side is Muttiah Muralitharan, who retired from Test cricket after the first Test against India in July last year, but has remained eligible for selection in the 50-over game, and was always expected to make the final 15.Kumar Sangakkara will lead the side with Mahela Jayawardene as his deputy.India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh host the 2011 World Cup, which will take place from February 19 to April 2.Sri Lanka World Cup squad: Kumar Sangakkara (capt & wk), Mahela Jayawardene, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Upul Tharanga, Thilan Samaraweera, Chamara Silva, Chamara Kapugedera, Angelo Mathews, Thisara Perera, Nuwan Kulasekara, Lasith Malinga, Dilhara Fernando, Muttiah Muralitharan, Ajantha Mendis, Rangana Herath.

Liverpool: Newspaper drops Vitinha update

As per Portuguese newspaper O Jogo, via Sport Witness, Liverpool are interested in signing FC Porto midfielder Vitinha.

The lowdown: Vitinha at Wolves

The Reds have been credited with an admiration of the creative ace for some time now and it appears that the interest remains.

A graduate of the Porto academy, Vitinha moved to Wolves on loan before returning to Portugal in 2021 having failed to score in 19 Premier League appearances during 2020/21.

Now it appears that Liverpool could be set to attempt to bring the midfielder back to England…

The latest: Liverpool in pursuit

According to O Jogo, as translated by SW, the Reds are following the Portugal international ‘with a lot of attention’ ahead of the summer transfer window.

The report also cites interest from Bayern Munich and Lazio in the man recently hailed as ‘fabulous’ by manager Sérgio Conceição following a standout display in a 4-2 victory over Paços de Ferreira.

Previously, a report from the same source has claimed that Liverpool assistant coach Pep Lijnders is personally scouting the one-cap star, who has a €40million (£33.2million) release clause.

The verdict: Get it done

Having witnessed the impact Luis Diaz has had since arriving from Porto in the January transfer window, it’s no surprise that the Jurgen Klopp and new sporting director Julian Ward would be considering adding the Colombian’s former teammate to the Anfield ranks.

So far this season Vitinha has earned an outstanding 7.54 average Sofascore rating from 25 Primeira Liga outings, which is actually better than the Diaz’s 7.47 rating prior to heading to Merseyside, whilst boasting an impressive 90% passing accuracy.

Predominantly operating from a central midfield role, the 22-year-old has scored three times and provided four assists in 40 appearances across all competitions so far this season, and it appears as though Ward, Klopp and Lijnders are growing quite fond of the Porto talent production line.

Joyce reveals extent of Thiago’s injury

Liverpool midfielder Thiago was ruled out of the Reds’ Carabao Cup final triumph over Chelsea because of a tight hamstring, according to reliable journalist Paul Joyce.

The Lowdown: Thiago suffers cup final heartache

Jurgen Klopp’s side secured a memorable triumph at Wembley on Sunday, beating the Blues 11-10 on penalties following a goalless draw after 120 minutes.

However, Thiago played no part in the game despite being named in the initial starting line-up, only to incur an injury during the warm-up.

The Spaniard was seen in tears on the touchline as the match got underway, leading to immediate concern regarding the severity of the issue.

The Latest: Joyce confirms extent of Thiago’s injury

According to The Times’ Paul Joyce, Thiago suffered a ‘tight hamstring’ which deemed him unable to take part in the match.

Instead, Naby Keita took his place in midfield and largely did well.

The Verdict: Could be worse

In truth, this update could certainly have been worse, for instance if it were a torn hamstring leading to a long spell on the sidelines.

However, it is still a worry for Liverpool ahead of a huge run of fixtures, with Thiago’s fitness issues always a problem throughout his career and Klopp needing to manage him carefully.

He has only made 50 appearances for the Reds since joining nearly 18 months ago, which speaks volumes about his lack of availability.

Leicestershire grind out a draw

Rearguard batting from Paul Nixon, with an unbeaten half-century, and nightwatchman Jigar Naik ensured Leicestershire earned a draw against promotion-chasing Glamorgan on the final day at Swansea

24-Jul-2010
Scorecard
Rearguard batting from Paul Nixon, with an unbeaten half-century, and nightwatchman Jigar Naik ensured Leicestershire earned a draw against promotion-chasing Glamorgan on the final day at Swansea. Leicestershire’s batting tactics were questionable, as in both innings they averaged little more than two runs an over, but in the end the result earned the counties seven points each. That was enough to take Glamorgan up to second place in Division Two five points ahead of third-placed Gloucestershire, who they take on at Cheltenham next week. When the players shook hands at 4.50pm to ensure the draw Leicestershire had reached 221 for 6 in their second innings, an overall lead of 178.Glamorgan went into the final day very hopeful of sealing their sixth championship win of the season. That optimism was heightened when James Harris bowled Jacques du Toit with the first ball of the morning to leave Leicestershire 41 for 3 in their second innings still two runs behind Glamorgan. But after that the home side failed to make further inroads for another 33 overs as Naik and James Taylor dug in for a draw. Only 63 runs came in those 33 overs as Leicestershire hardly played a shot in anger and the pitch failed to produce the same prodigious turn that it had on the third day.A rare boundary from Taylor brought up the Leicestershire 100 but four runs later the right hander was dismissed by Robert Croft, to give him 1,001 first-class wickets for Glamorgan, caught one-handed by Gareth Rees at short leg. Taylor was obviously upset by umpire Richard Illingworth’s decision claiming the ball had come off his chest.Either side of lunch Leicestershire continued to frustrate Glamorgan’s hopes of a victory with Naik and Nixon holding off for another 19 overs. Glamorgan were given slight hope when Naik’s three-hour vigil, during which he faced 193 balls for his 35, came to an end when he was bowled by Jamie Dalrymple. But Nixon, an obdurate batsman at the best of times, ensured Leicestershire shut the door on the Welsh county. Glamorgan delayed taking the new ball but when it was thrown to James Harris he duly obliged by having Tom New caught behind to leave Leicestershire 176 for 6, a lead of 133.Nixon went on to make his half century from 118 balls, but when play resumed following a rain break after tea the crowd were treated to the farcical spectacle of wicketkeeper Mark Wallace coming on for the final over – his first in first-class cricket.
