New Zealand’s best Test batsman Kane Williamson brightened up a gloomy day in Auckland with his 18th Test hundred, passing Martin Crowe and Ross Taylor to become the country’s leading century-maker

Only 23.1 overs were possible on the second day in Auckland as steady rain prevented no more than 90 minutes of play. New Zealand’s best Test batsman Kane Williamson, though, brightened up a gloomy afternoon with his 18th Test hundred, passing Martin Crowe and Ross Taylor to become the country’s leading century-maker. He eventually fell for 102 shortly after the tea break, lbw to James Anderson, England’s only wicket of the day.Williamson reached the landmark with a trademark glide towards gully. In the company of Henry Nicholls, Williamson added 22 runs in 10 overs prior to heavy rain forcing an early tea 40 minutes into the first session.Under cloudy skies, Anderson found some movement with the new ball after the break. In the fourth over since resumption, Williamson had shuffled too far across against a prodigious inswinger from Anderson. An optimistic review didn’t save him.Nicholls, at the other end, showed admirable patience and a tight defensive technique, repeatedly leaving balls outside off stump he didn’t need to play, and only venturing into an attacking shot if the bowlers erred in his areas.BJ Watling, after missing the West Indies Tests due to a hip injury, struck three fours in his unbeaten 17, helping New Zealand stretch their significant first-innings advantage to 171 before periodic spells of rain wiped out the rest of the day.
Having gathered a reputation for being India’s difficult-pitch bowler, the Ishant Sharma said he was “always up” for the challenge of doing the dirty work of bowling long spells
Sidharth Monga in Centurion14-Jan-2018
BCCI
The BCCI or the captain Virat Kohli might not have communicated it in Cape Town, but Ishant Sharma has said he missed the first Test because he had not recovered from an illness. Finally in the XI, Ishant did his job to cover up for the profligate strike bowlers and the big wickets of AB de Villiers and Faf du Plessis even as India’s fielding faltered to allow South Africa to reach 335 on a pitch that might not be great for a fourth-innings chase.Ishant has now gathered a reputation for being India’s difficult-pitch bowler, somebody who will do the dirty work over after over. Ishant was asked if he prided in the fact that he is not used on green pitches but when long spells of hard work is required, he is called up.”Actually I cannot blame anyone for this,” Ishant said. “I was supposed to play the first Test but I fell ill as soon as we reached here [South Africa]. So I wasn’t fully recovered from the fever so I didn’t play the first game.”Obviously, I am the senior fast bowler of this team so I have to take responsibility [of bowling in difficult conditions]. If I am able to take responsibility and take those important wickets for the team, I am always up for it.”One of the big differences in Ishant’s bowling has been his assessment of the lengths to bowl. In his previous “unlucky” days, Ishant was guilty of bowling a little too short, failing to get the edges or hitting the stumps. He said keeping it simple has helped him. “I always believe in my strength and my strength is bounce, so I always try to bowl where I can finish my ball on the top of off stump,” Ishant said. “So I think that’s the best chance you give yourself to take more wickets, so that’s what I was doing.”Ishant’s first call of duty was to pull things back after an ordinary start from Mohammed Shami, but Ishant defended his bowing mates. “Bowlers are human beings after all,” Ishant said. “Not a bowling machine that we can get wickets straightaway. I was not thinking much, the game was opening up a bit because of runs, so my effort was to keep bowling in good areas, and bowl in the batsman’s weak areas, set your fields and bowl according to plans. Don’t give away too many runs, and that is what I was thinking.”Ishant also defended his fielders, who have been putting down catches at slips. Their success rate against pace since December 2013 has been 41%, but on Sunday, it was against spin that Kohli faltered. The reprieved eighth-wicket partnership added 35 more runs since Kagiso Rabada was dropped, and that could yet prove to be the deciding factor in the Test.”We have coaches for that and everybody is pointing it out,” Ishant said when asked if the bowling group discussed their frustrations overs missed chances. “We don’t have to react on all these things because it is part and parcel of the game. You know they are the fielders, and they will take brilliant catches for us, and they have taken brilliant catches for us, and I am sure they will in the future as well. So there is no need to panic in these things. All these situations, it’s okay, it’s part and parcel of the game. You just have to run hard, keep bowling and give your best to get them out.”
West Ham United have reportedly entered the chase for Man United defender Alvaro Fernandez after their previous interest in Scott McTominay and Harry Maguire.
Who will West Ham sign?
After months of waiting for his summer signings, Hammers boss David Moyes has now watched two targets come through the door in midfielders Edson Alvarez and James Ward-Prowse.
The former, who put pen to paper on a move from Ajax, will contribute to replacing former star Declan Rice after his £105 million transfer to Arsenal.
Meanwhile, Ward-Prowse will add further steal to the West Ham midfield and brings with him real Premier League experience. The player himself, speaking after he signed, says he cannot wait to get started.
"I’m buzzing to be here at West Ham United," said Ward-Prowse.
"It’s great to be here and I’m looking forward to getting going. From the outside looking in, this is a Club that has been on the rise for a number of years now and coming off the success in the UEFA Europa Conference League last year, you can feel there is real momentum around this Club. It’s great to be a part of it and I can’t wait to play my role in the games to come.
“When I think about my game, it is based on hard work, graft, and giving 100 per cent. West Ham United has always been a club that has epitomised that."

The east Londoners are looking to back Moyes with further signings, especially amid Lucas Paqueta's potential move to league champions Man City.
West Ham, as they also gear up for another campaign in Europe, must keep adding quality to their ranks with journalists Alvaro de Grado and Manuel Amor sharing news on Fernandez.
The 20-year-old, who enjoyed a brilliant campaign on loan at Preston North End last term, is being courted by several clubs in Spain, Germany and England.
Granada, Las Palmas, Espanyol, Eintracht Frankfurt, Burnley and the Hammers are all named as clubs to have recently enquired about Fernandez's situation at Old Trafford.
Amor and de Grado go on to claim that there have been "contacts" between West Ham and United over the left-back, who Erik ten Hag's side value at around £6 million.
Fernandez is available for that price and it appears many clubs are keen to jump at the opportunity.
How good is Alvaro Fernandez?
Alvaro Fernandez
The Spaniard made 39 Championship appearances for PNE last term, ranking among their top ten best-performers by average match rating according to WhoScored.
An attack-minded full-back, Fernandez completed more successful take-ons than any other member of Ryan Lowe's squad – all while registering four assists.
Lowe, commenting on his former loanee back at the beginning of 22/23, called the player "immaculate".
"He's an immaculate kid though, isn't he?" Lowe told the media after a match.
"Everything about him. He's asked questions on a daily basis, is playing a different role to what he is probably used to at Manchester United – as a left wing-back for us, not left-back.
"He is a fantastic talent – you don't play for Real Madrid and Manchester United if you are not any good. We knew that when we saw him, we knew he'd bring something different to us and he certainly did that tonight."
Glasgow Rangers secured a much-needed victory in midweek during their Champions League qualifying tie against Servette, prevailing 2-1 at Ibrox.
It follows on from the poor start to the 2023/24 Premiership campaign, losing 1-0 to Kilmarnock, and it’s clear that Michael Beale may need to add another defender or two before the transfer window shuts.
With this in mind, the Light Blues have been linked with a potential move for Leicester City centre-back Harry Souttar in the coming weeks in a bid to cure their defensive issues.
Are Rangers interested in Harry Souttar?
TalkSPORT journalist Geoff Peters discussed Souttar’s future on Twitter, saying: “Rangers are interested in taking Harry Souttar on loan from Leicester City. Souttar was an unused sub against Coventry at the weekend and not in the 20-man #lcfc squad tonight at Burton. Other clubs also monitoring the situation. His older brother John joined Rangers last year.”

A temporary deal appears to be in the works, although it looks as though Beale faces competition to secure the £41k-per-week defender.
The Ibrox side have missed out on Auston Trusty recently, while a deal for Jonathan Panzo now appears off the table and it’s clear Beale has moved onto other options.
Could Harry Souttar improve Rangers?
Although Beale has five centre-backs at the club, the Gers’ defensive frailties were exposed during the loss to Kilmarnock, where a mix-up in the box saw the Rugby Park outfit score the winner in the second half.
Connor Goldson is the key fixture in the heart of the defence and was one of the few bright sparks against Killie, winning 90% of his total duels while making four tackles and not committing a single foul.
The Englishman has been a mainstay since arriving at Ibrox in 2018, racking up 263 appearances and what is needed now is a player who could form a solid duo alongside him in defence.
Souttar could be the ideal candidate, and he has more experience than his older brother, John Souttar, who partnered Goldson during the first two matches this term.
Starting off at Dundee United (like John), he then moved to Stoke City before eventually moving to the Premier League with Leicester in January.
Across 12 league matches in the top flight, Souttar won a staggering 5.1 total duels – a success rate of 73% – while making 1.3 tackles and 3.8 clearances per game, ranking him 13th and third across the squad, which is a solid return considering how few matches he played.
Both the Foxes ace and Goldson are strong in the tackle and exude a solid physical presence, both aerially and on the ground which could allow them to form a wonderful partnership.
Statman Dave certainly supported this, saying: “Harry Souttar has won 88% of his aerial duels in the Premier League so far this season, That’s more than any other player.
“Big man at the back.”
He was even hailed as a “beast” by journalist Sacha Pisani following Australia’s World Cup victory over Tunisia, a match where Souttar made six clearances, won five of his six duels, and blocked three shots, turning into a rock at the back.
If Beale could secure a move for the 24-year-old in the coming weeks, it may well turn out to be one of his finest summer signings.
Liverpool are interested in signing Fluminense midfielder Andre this summer, and recent reports might just have tipped the odds in the favour of Jurgen Klopp's side.
Are Liverpool going to sign Andre?
That's according to Brazilian outlet Globo, claiming that the Reds have maintained an interest in the 22-year-old for several years after first sending scouts to observe him in action in 2020.
The Brazilian top-flight outfit's stance on Andre's valuation is said to be irreducible, with Sky Sports reporting that the fee in question stands at a ballpark £20m.
Read the latest Liverpool transfer news HERE…
Fluminense are also reluctant to lose the thriving midfielder midway through the Brazilian Serie A season, but if Klopp pushes for an agreement, Liverpool might just capture their man.
How good is Andre?
Liverpool's focus is currently on sealing a deal for Southampton's 19-year-old holding midfielder Romeo Lavia, though that pursuit is dragging on with Saints unwavering in their £50m valuation.
If the Reds are to achieve their goals this term, the transfer business still to be conducted needs a swift conclusion. Andre's outfit are determined to keep him but money talks in football and Klopp must now lodge a formal offer.
As per Sofascore, the tenacious midfielder has recorded an average rating of 7.09 across 14 matches in the Brazilian top-flight this term, remarkably completing 94% of his passes, averaging 0.9 key passes, 2.1 tackles and 1.5 interceptions per game and succeeding in 63% of his contested ground duels.
Having already earned his first senior Brazil cap, Andre is held in high regard and given that he is a "leader" – as praised by talent scout Jacek Kulig – on the pitch, could bring the kind of personality Klopp covets, especially after losing experienced duo Jordan Henderson and Fabinho to Saudi Arabian sides this summer.
Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder Moises Caicedo.
Hailed as a "top-class roaming playmaker" by Kulig, Andre could be the perfect alternative to Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Moises Caicedo, who is valued at £100m amid interest from Chelsea, though Liverpool have also been credited with an interest.
Caicedo is hailed as a "joy to watch" by journalist Josh Bunting and produced an average Sofascore match rating of 7.08 in the Premier League last season, completing 89% of his passes, making 2.7 tackles and 1.5 interceptions per game and succeeding with 57% of his ground duels.
The Ecuadorian also ranks among the top 6% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues for pass completion, the top 13% for tackles and the top 11% for interceptions per 90, as per FBref, which illustrates his skill as a first-class ball-player and tenacious defensive force.
Comparatively, Andre ranks among the top 1% of midfielders across Men's Next Eight divisions for pass completion and the top 6% for successful take-ons per 90, and given his own passing prowess and directness, he could certainly prove to be a star to rival Caicedo in the future.
Liverpool seemingly do not boast the extravagant funds to pay Brighton what they demand for Caicedo, but given the relatively small fee it would take to sign Andre in comparison, it simply must be completed ahead of the new Premier League campaign.

Adam Lyth and Shaun Marsh posted half-centuries as Yorkshire got their NatWest T20 Blast campaign off to a flyer with a record-breaking 48-run win over Nottinghamshire at Headingley. The Vikings amassed 227 for five, their highest ever T20 score, with opener Lyth hitting 82 off 50 balls and Australian debutant Marsh adding 60 not out off 37.They shared 83 inside nine overs for the third wicket before Alex Hales smacked 47 off 26 balls to raise Notts hopes early on in their chase. But they had too much to do after he departed at 55 for 2 in the seventh and finished with 179 for 8.For Yorkshire, who face Derbyshire at Chesterfield tomorrow, the crowd of 10,037 was also their highest ever outside a Roses clash.Lyth and Marsh underpinned Yorkshire’s innings after winning the toss and were further boosted by David Willey (25 off 13), Jack Leaning (17 off seven) and Peter Handscomb (21 off seven). The first time the Vikings run-rate dropped below 10 came in the ninth over, with Samit Patel getting Willey caught at long-on with his second ball.Lyth pulled the second legitimate ball of the match for six off Luke Wood, but that was over the long boundary towards the East Stand side of Headingley.
‘We were sloppy’ – Gurney
Harry Gurney, Notts pace bowler:“It was lost in the first half. They got far too many runs. There was a very short boundary, but whenever you are chasing 230, you are struggling more often than not. We were sloppy with the ball.”
The majority of the hosts’ eleven sixes went to the short Western Terrace boundary, and Notts could not get any control.Lyth hit New Zealand leg-spinner Ish Sodhi over long-on to bring up his fifty in style off 32 balls before later falling as one of three wickets to Harry Gurney, skying a catch behind.Marsh was happy to get his fellow left-hander on strike early on before opening his shoulders. He reached his fifty off 43.Leaning hit Steven Mullaney for back-to-back sixes in the 17th over before Handscomb did likewise off Luke Fletcher in the 19th.Yorkshire scored 52 runs off their last three overs.Notts got their chase off to a healthy start thanks to two sixes for Hales in first three overs, including one straight off England team-mate Willey. The Outlaws had reached 32 without loss in the fourth by the time Hales was dropped on 30 at deep square by Azeem Rafiq off captain Tim Bresnan, who had Michael Lumb caught at mid-off later in the over – 33 for one.Hales scored 42 of the first 50 runs, brought up in the sixth over.Rafiq atoned for his earlier error with his first ball, in the seventh over, by getting Hales caught at deep mid-wicket, leaving Notts at 55 for two.Adil Rashid bowled Samit Patel and Rafiq struck again in the eleventh, getting Rikki Wessels caught and bowled as Notts fell to 84 for four in the eleventh. And they could not recover. They reached 15 overs at 126 for four, still needing 102.Rafiq finished with two for 38 and Rashid one for 22 from their four-over spells, while Steve Patterson added two late wickets.

Queensland’s hopes of reaching the Sheffield Shield final suffered a blow as almost half of the second day against Victoria in Brisbane was washed out. The Bulls need to win to have any chance of securing a place in the decider – which will also be against the Bushrangers – and although the wet weather cut into their game time, they also claimed late wickets to keep their chances alive.Victoria began the day on 0 for 20 and moved to 6 for 201 at stumps, trailing Queensland by eight runs, with Seb Gotch yet to score and James Pattinson on 5. Victoria lost both openers with the score on 65 – Marcus Harris was caught behind off Jack Wildermuth for 49 and Travis Dean then fell to Michael Neser for 14.Aaron Finch and Rob Quiney then put on 98 for the third wicket and each managed half-centuries, but Neser trapped Finch lbw for 52 and then followed up with the wicket of Cameron White for 2. The loss of Quiney for 57 and Daniel Christian for 7 helped keep Queensland in the game.
Tamil Nadu struck quickly in the final session of play to prise out three Mumbai wickets, achieving some parity after being limited to 305 on the second day of the Ranji Trophy semi-final in Rajkot

For three-fourths of the day, Tamil Nadu were run ragged and faced the risk of being dispirited, but a burst of energy in the early part of the final session, led by Vijay Shankar and Aushik Srinivas, produced three wickets to leave Mumbai on 171 for 4 at stumps. Tamil Nadu have at best achieved only a semblance of parity considering they haven’t posted a big total themselves – they added only 44 runs to their overnight score of 261 for 6.However, with Suryakumar Yadav (73) and Praful Waghela (48) counter-punching their way to 121 runs after the fall of debutant opener Prithvi Shaw in the first over, it’s an outcome Tamil Nadu won’t mind. That Mumbai didn’t slip any further was thanks to an unbroken 41-run partnership between captain Aditya Tare and Shreyas Iyer, who came into bat at the fall of the fourth wicket instead of his customary position at No.3. But before their sensible approach and the team’s wobble, it was Suryakumar and Waghela who ensured Tamil Nadu couldn’t exploit the advantage of the early wicket. Both batsmen were unforgiving when the seamers bowled full, and Suryakumar, in particular, wasn’t afraid of hitting the ball in the air. When Aswin Crist banged one in short, Suryakumar simply swivelled around and swatted it over fine leg for six. Mumbai hit high gear and stayed there – they were 39 for 1 in 10 overs, 60 for 1 in 15 and 81 for 1 after 20 – but not once did they attempt to over-reach. Suryakumar, though, had a lucky break in the ninth over when B Indrajith couldn’t time his jump well to pluck a forceful slash at first slip off Crist’s bowling. He then survived a close shout for lbw off the next ball. Suryakumar had volunteered to bat at No.3 and realised the need for him to dominate the bowling.”I told the coach I would take responsibility at No.3 and play the way he does rather than just look to stay out there,” he said. “That’s what I did because runs were important. I didn’t do anything extra, but got an opportunity to bat at No.3 so I had to try to emulate him.”Tamil Nadu’s seamers were being carted around, which prompted R Ashwin to tweet that the “seam on the ball is not standing up, the wrist position or the ball is surely not right.” Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu had introduced left-arm spinner Aushik Srinivas in the 19th over, and it proved to be a defining change. He bowled eight overs for 11 runs in an uninterrupted spell before tea before switching ends after the break when Shankar was given the ball.Suddenly there was a conspicuous buzz in the field, especially with Shankar was getting the ball to reverse, like how Mumbai’s seamers had done in the final session on Sunday. This time Ashwin tweeted that the “seam is sitting up when Vijay Shankar is bowling and things are happening.” With runs being dried up – only 14 runs had come in eight overs after tea – something had to give and Suryakumar went for an expansive drive outside off and was caught behind. In the next over, Waghle responded to Tare’s call for a run, but despite a dive and a mediocre throw from Abhinav Mukund, he found himself short by inches. Two balls later, Siddesh Lad drove Aushik uppishly only for Abhinav to complete the catch at short extra cover.Suryakumar rued his shot selection, but credited Tamil Nadu’s disciplined bowling. “They were planning to bowl on one side and I had to play out that half-an-hour period,” he said. “Vijay Shankar was bowling well at that time. He was bowling around 120-125. On such wickets, bowlers who move the ball at that pace trouble the batsmen. We were trying the same thing yesterday and they were probably trying the same thing. During that 40-45-minute period they showed very good energy and intensity after my wicket.”Much of the energy Suryakumar referred to came through some colourful chatter from Dinesh Karthik which was almost exclusively in Tamil. When someone bowled at a good pace, for instance, he would refrain from saying as much in English and instead use “azhagana vegam (that’s the right pace), a phrase that is hardly used in casual conversation. Shankar admitted that sometimes the team stuck to Tamil to ensure the opposition didn’t understand what they were discussing. “It is mostly just to get everyone together,” he said. “Most of the time we speak in Tamil. It’s a great opportunity for everyone playing semifinals, so we just want to enjoy it.”Shankar played a key role with the bat as well in the morning, but he was out chasing a ball outside off soon after his fifty. His dismissal led to the lower order unravelling quickly. “I was really disappointed with the way I got out,” he said. “My intention as to build partnerships with the tail-enders and it was my mistake. Maybe I played a bad shot.”
