Malcom and Arsenal can help each other get going again

Arsenal boss Unai Emery must be desperate to add to his ranks ahead of Thursday’s 11 pm deadline but funds are limited.

The Spaniard has made a decent start to life as Arsenal boss after replacing Arsene Wenger in the summer. Emery added to his ranks during the summer with some signings making an instant impact whilst others have failed to settle into life at the Emirates.

Instead, Emery has been forced into the loan market and has made Barcelona outcast, Denis Suarez, a target. The Gunners face a race to complete the deal before the window slams shut, though as reported by the BBC, a deal is thought to be close at the time of writing. Still, Emery should also be keeping tabs on other players who may be available on a temporary deal.

One man he should aim to lure to England is Barcelona’s Malcom. Valued at £36m by Transfermarkt, the Brazilian was one of Europe’s hottest properties in the summer after an impressive season in Ligue 1 with Bordeaux. It was Barcelona who won the race for his signature, beating Roma at the last minute, but the youngster has failed to have the desired impact at the Nou Camp.

Malcom has started just one game in La Liga suggesting that a loan move could be on the cards to aid his development. Moving to Arsenal would be perfect for the Brazil U23 international as the winger would thrive in Emery’s system. With blistering pace and excellent dribbling skills, Malcom would be the perfect fit alongside Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the Gunners attack.

A loan move with the option to buy at the end of the season could give Arsenal the boost they need to secure a top-four finish.

Liverpool fans react as Arnautovic could miss Monday’s showdown

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Liverpool fans have been reacting to some news that could have an effect on the title race, as Marko Arnautovic left West Ham’s defeat at Wolves on crutches.

Newcastle did Liverpool a huge favour on Tuesday evening, but that wasn’t the only advantage they gained in the title race on the night.

West Ham will host the Reds on Monday night, and it looks fairly certain they will be without talisman Arnautovic.

The Austrian international, who recently signed a new contract amidst talks of a move away from East London, has scored seven times in the Premier League this season, per Whoscored.

He left Molineux in crutches on Tuesday though, as confirmed by injury expert Ben Dinnery.

Football.London’s Sam Inkersole has since said the injury “isn’t as bad as initially feared” but popular insider ExWHUemployee does expect the Austrian to miss one to two weeks.

The 29 year-old joins a long list of key first team players nursing injuries, such as Fabian Balbuena, Manuel Lanzini, Jack Wilshere, Carlos Sanchez and Andriy Yarmolenko.

The Irons have conceded seven goals across their last two games in all competitions, and the Twitter reactions down below are expecting a trouncing on Monday…

Nico Elvedi is the long-term solution to Arsenal’s defensive woes in the summer

Arsenal made just one signing on deadline day – bringing in Denis Suarez on loan from Barcelona.

The cash-strapped Gunners were forced to look for temporary deals given the lack of funds at Unai Emery’s disposal. Having managed to secure Suarez’s services, Arsenal also targeted Belgian winger Yannick Carrasco and Inter Milan’s Ivan Perisic; Arsenal also attempted to sign Christopher Nkunku from Paris St Germain. However, the London club were unable to get the deals across the line in time.

Instead, their attention will now turn to the summer window where a larger budget should be available for new recruits. Finishing the season in a Champions League place would make their summer recruitment drive a lot easier. Given their recent injury problems, adding defensive reinforcements should be a priority for Emery.

One man he could target is Borussia Monchengladbach starlet – Nico Elvedi. Valued at £22.5m by Transfermarkt, the Switzerland international has blossomed into a key player for the Bundesliga side since joining from FC Zurich back in 2015. Elvedi has made 17 appearances in all competitions this season and has been one of the club’s most impressive performers.

The 22-year-old primarily operates as a centre-back but his versatility means he is also comfortable at both right and left back making him the ideal summer recruit. Elvedi is excellent on the ball and displays a wonderful range of passing, completing 92% of his passes in the Bundesliga this season. The youngster is also a dominant force in the air, winning 2.4 aerial duels per game this season, meaning he will have no issues adapting to the physicality of the Premier League (WhoScored).

Still developing and improving, this would be an astute piece of business from the Gunners.

Spurs will increase efforts to sell Wanyama this summer

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Tottenham Hotspur will step up efforts to sell Victor Wanyama in January, per Football Insider.

What’s the word?

The report claims that manager Jose Mourinho has placed the Kenya international in the “shop window” ahead of the January market.

Indeed, the Portuguese introduced the Kenya international as a substitute on Wednesday evening as Spurs lost 3-1 to Bayern Munich, reportedly in an effort to make clubs aware of his fitness.

Spurs die-hards are getting 70% on this Ultimate Tottenham Quiz. Can you beat them?

Wanyama has made just one start this season, against Colchester United, and three substitute appearances; he is valued at £10m by the club.

A necessary exit

Wanyama has been on the fringes of the first-team squad for some time now.

Even last season, under Mauricio Pochettino, the former Southampton ace made just four starts in the Premier League.

He has battled with injury woes throughout his career in north London, missing a total of 47 games through a cartilage problem and two knee injuries.

He is on his last legs and one feels that he cannot be expected to play a key role under Mourinho any time soon.

The time is right to move him on and potentially bring in a replacement; that should happen in January.

Meanwhile, Barcelona have been told to sign one Spurs ace.

Everton fans react to injury update on Morgan Schneiderlin and Theo Walcott

Everton caretaker manager Duncan Ferguson confirmed in his pre-match Manchester United press conference on Friday that Theo Walcott and Morgan Schneiderlin will both miss the trip to Old Trafford on Sunday with calf issues.

The duo started the Scot’s first match at the helm against Chelsea last week, although the former had to be replaced late on by Bernard having suffered an injury problem.

The 47-year-old former Toffee said on Friday that Walcott is out for three weeks and Schneiderlin two, and the latter’s absence in particular will hit the Merseyside outfit hard ahead of their trip to face Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s in-form men.

Everton are already without Andre Gomes and Jean-Philippe Gbamin through injury, while Fabian Delph has only just returned to training and may not be fit enough to be included in the XI.

Following a tough start to the campaign, Walcott has been more of a familiar name on the team-sheet in the Premier League under Marco Silva and now Ferguson in recent weeks, while Schneiderlin has benefitted from the injuries to Gomes and Gbamin to start nine times in the top flight.

Did he play for Everton? Simple question but a lot tougher than you think…

Many fans focused on how short the injuries will leave them at Old Trafford given all of the other problems they already have, with others bemoaning their lack of luck as you can see below.

However, there were also those fans who decided to use the injuries to criticise two players who probably haven’t performed as well as they may have been expected to during their Everton careers.

One went as far as saying the latest setback means the duo “should be offloaded in January”, while another described them as a “pair of passengers”.

Perhaps harsh on paper, but given the Toffees’ lowly position in the Premier League standings their frustration is completely understandable, as well as the fact both Walcott and Schneiderlin have been heavily criticised by supporters for their performances this term.

Aston Villa showed a distinct lack of organisation for Jack Stephens’ goal

When speaking after the game, Dean Smith claimed that Aston Villa’s goals conceded against Southampton came down to “individual mistakes”, as reported by the club’s official channels.

That can be said for the first and third goals, when Bjorn Engels was completely taken out of the game with one pass, while Marvelous Nakamba provided Danny Ings with a golden chance on a plate.

However, it is Southampton’s second that should be most concerning for the manager, as it showed a distinct lack of organisation from the men in claret and blue, rather than relying on a mistake from one man.

When James Ward-Prowse whipped his corner into the box, powerful Saints centre-back Jack Stephens found himself directly up against Anwar El Ghazi, who averages just 0.8 aerial duels won per game.

It should not be too much of a surprise that he easily beat the Dutchman to get his head on the ball, as he directed it across Tom Heaton and into the back of the net.

Villa really could have set themselves up in a far better way to deal with the aerial threat that Southampton showed during the set-piece.

For starters, they had Wesley, who wins 3.3 aerial duels per game, filling the space on the edge of the six-yard box, rather than actually getting close to any of the potential threats.

In addition, they had Douglas Luiz on Danny Ings, who was able to move away from the Brazilian with ease and found himself in space.

Most surprisingly of all, Kortney Hause, the 6 foot 3 defensive powerhouse, was left as a free man.

With organisation like that, it should not be too much of a surprise that they have already conceded ten goals from set-pieces in the league this season, which is the highest total of any Premier League club.

Villa really need to sort this out, as they must be better organised if hope is to be maintained that the team can stop conceding so regularly and climb the table.

In other news, one Villa man got a mixed reaction from fans following the Southampton loss.

Man United fans laud Mason Greenwood and compare him to Robin van Persie

Manchester United thumped Newcastle United 4-1 on Boxing Day and youngster Mason Greenwood was in the thick of the action.

The 18-year-old netted in the 36th minute to put his side into the lead after initially going behind to a Matty Longstaff strike and finished the match with a further two key passes, three dribbles and two tackles to his name.

Needless to say, United fans were left drooling over the teenager throughout the course of the match and after the full-time whistle, with some of the terminology used to describe him including “unreal”, “amazing”, “brilliant” and “exciting”, while one supporter dubbed him a “generational talent”.

And it seems that Greenwood is already drawing comparisons with a Premier League icon in Robin van Persie, who famously fired the Red Devils to the title in 2012/13.

Fans have commented on the similarities in their movement and finishing – Greenwood’s strike against the Magpies was certainly reminiscent of the Dutchman’s technique – while one has even pointed out that their names contain the same number of letters.

Of course, Greenwood has some way to go before he matches the status of a player who scored 144 Premier League goals, as well as amassing 65 assists, but the early signs are certainly encouraging.

Still just 18, Greenwood already has seven strikes for United to his name, including three in the Premier League.

QPR fans want Neil Warnock to replace Mark Warburton

QPR started off the season in fine form with the likes of Eberechi Eze and Nahki Wells proving to be amongst the best attackers in the division. To date, the pair have a combined 17 goals this term. However, recent weeks has marked a return to the disappointment of last season.

Mark Warburton is very much implementing a new project in West London, operating with a passing style that had got the best out of some players, but at the detriment of the defence.

The R’s have conceded the second-most goals of any side in the division and there is little sign of improvement in that area, with the team winning just two out of their last 12 games as a result.

A defeat by Hull on Sunday has led fan frustration with the QPR boss to grow, and as the team slips further towards the relegation zone it is likely that supporter concern will only increase.

Concern with the R’s boss is understandable but patience and support is needed now more than ever, and the fans should consider the circumstances under which he is working.

He has improved the likes of Eze and the team is performing better than last term despite losing players like Luke Freeman and Jake Bidwell, and therefore the former Rangers manager is doing well, especially considering he is working with a low budget.

Whose Line Is It Anyway: Roy Keane, Graeme Souness or Adrian Durham?

Nevertheless, some are keen for a change, and ex-boss Neil Warnock is the name on many fans’ lips after he was sacked by Cardiff earlier this year.

He had hinted that he would retire at the end of the season but he could fancy a return to QPR having created special memories at the club by taking them to the Premier League in his spell there.

Another player Warburton has improved is Ryan Manning, and the left-back is a target of Wolves as a result, and our Football FanCast writers shared whether the left-back could make the step-up to the Premier League.

Sheffield Wednesday fans discuss Steven Fletcher going off with an injury

When you’re battling to secure promotion to the Premier League, the one thing you can absolutely do without, is injuries. And in Sheffield Wednesday’s case, the one man who they arguably would not have wanted to suffer any kind of lay-off, is Steven Fletcher.

Watch Sheffield Wednesday Videos With StreamFootball.tv Below

But in their clash against Brighton in the FA Cup on Saturday afternoon, the 32-year-old was stretchered off with what looked like a potentially serious injury. And although Garry Monk moved to play down any major concerns, he did concede that they would “have to see about the damage around the knee”.

And after seeing him being forced off after 55 minutes of the contest, Owls fans took to Twitter to voice their thoughts on the situation.

A few fans urged the club to act in the transfer market in response to Fletcher’s potential injury, with a couple of supporters calling on Dejphon Chansiri to splash the cash.

Some fans were very critical of Monk’s decision to play Fletcher in the first place, with one supporter in particular claiming that it was “absolutely ludicrous” to do so.

Whilst Monk confirmed that the x-ray delivered a promising initial prognosis, it still doesn’t paint the full picture as to the potential damage Fletcher may have suffered. And with promotion well and truly on the line, the Owls’ board desperately need to act accordingly, or else they risk seeing their campaign go up in smoke.

Meanwhile, Sheffield Wednesday’s chances of success this season could hinge upon doing this in January.

Southampton’s hierarchy must show Adams the same faith as Hasenhuttl received

As we approach the halfway mark of this January transfer window, a lot of the focus at Southampton – and Leeds – has been on Che Adams.

The Athletic’s Phil Hay confirmed that Marcelo Bielsa’s side want to sign the former Birmingham striker, while Ralph Hasenhuttl responded to the talk by saying that he wants Adams to stay at the club.

Incidentally, the 23-year-old is yet to net his first goal for the Saints following his £15m move to St Mary’s back in the summer, with just a single assist to show for his efforts across 19 appearances in all competitions – even that set-up only came in the most recent outing against Leicester.

However, a fresh report from Hay in The Athletic has revealed that the Southampton hierarchy are in fact open to letting Adams depart the south coast this month, in return for a £1m loan fee as well as an obligation for Leeds to buy the Englishman for ‘more than £10m’ at the end of the season.

“Hasenhuttl wants Adams to stay, saying on Friday that Southampton would “need him in the second half of the season”, but The Athletic understands Southampton’s hierarchy are more open to letting Adams go, for a loan fee of £1 million and an obligation to sign Adams permanently for more than £10m at the end of the season. Leeds are ready to meet those demands and Adams, who is keen to take the move to Elland Road, has been considering forcing the issue himself by informing Hasenhuttl of his desire to leave.”

Now, it appears that – given Hasenhuttl’s comments – the manager and the hierarchy at St Mary’s aren’t on the same page.

However, the question has to be asked – why are those higher up at Southampton ready to give up on their £15m purchase so soon after signing him?

What must happen is that the Saints hierarchy need to show Adams the same faith as they showed Hasenhuttl when times were tough earlier in the campaign.

How much do you remember about football in 2019? Our quiz will test your knowledge…

Following the embarrassing 9-0 defeat to Leicester at the end of October, the board reiterated their faith and belief in the former RB Leipzig to turn things around, where the Austrian coach has since overseen an excellent run of four wins and a draw from Southampton’s last five league outings, propelling them into 12th on 28 points.

Their faith in that moment has paid off so far, and it would be harsh to not instil a similar belief in a striker who is still relatively young and is also someone who is embarking on his first taste of Premier League football this season.

If Hasenhuttl wants Adams to stay, then so should the board – the No.10 deserves the hierarchy’s support.
