Their new Son: Spurs have held advanced talks to sign a future £100m player

This week, Tottenham Hotspur fans will get to see Heung-min Son again. On Tuesday, he will be there, down N17, beaming and emotional as he waves goodbye to the club he devoted the prime years of his iconic career.

Poetry has a funny way of weaving its way into so many narratives in football, and there was certainly something romantic about the South Korean legend sealing silverware on his final game for Spurs, ending the endless drought.

Tottenham haven’t really replaced their former captain, just as someone on a level with Harry Kane at number nine has not been signed either.

That may change in 2026.

Spurs lining up new forwards

In October, Tottenham announced a £100m equity injection. What this pertains to could go on interminably, but it effectively means Frank’s first-team squad will be seeing some improvements in the near future. Investment is imminent.

And it’s clear that additions are needed up top, with the potency Son provided – even on the decline, the 32-year-old scored 24 goals and assisted 19 more across his final two Premier League campaigns – yet to be matched.

Should the Lilywhites win the race for RB Leipzig prospect Yan Diomande, with their interest confirmed by Caught Offside, Frank might just land the talisman he is looking for.

The report claims Spurs are among the myriad of top clubs to have sent scouts to watch the 19-year-old winger this season, and such competitive intrigue indicates a market value or around €80m (equating to £68m).

The news comes just days after it was revealed by separate sources that Spurs were in ‘very advanced talks’ with the player’s agents last week to sign the player.

Why Spurs should sign Yan Diomande

Diomande might be in the hatchling stage of his career, but already, he is proving that he can throw down with the heavyweights, having made an electric start to his career in Germany with Leipzig, scoring seven goals and supplying four assists across 15 matches this term, having joined from

The Ivorian winger’s technical skills stand out, and a slippery dribbling style makes him a force to be reckoned with. Coach Harry Brook believes he will “be worth £100m plus” in the not-too-distant future, and so it’s worth Tottenham snapping him up promptly.

Already, we can observe startling progress across a range of areas for Diomande. He is physical and he is fast, and he is also fostering a natural-born clinical edge in front of goal, with his defensive work-rate not leaving much to be desired either.

Remind you of anyone? This could be the new Son, especially since he hails from the Bundesliga, with Tottenham signing their departed hero from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015.

Diomande is showing signs of elite balance in output. He’s got an eye for goal, but that doesn’t detract from his playmaking, and nor does it mean he shirks away from defensive duties, from using his speed to cover plenty of ground and influence in different areas.

Son, in many ways is irreplaceable, and perhaps that’s why the board opted against trying to find a carbon copy, as they did with Kane.

But now, real quality, bona fide quality, is needed up top, else Tottenham will find themselves struggling to match the might of rivals at the top of the Premier League.

Diomande has talent in spades, and he might just find himself developing into a winger of a similar level with Son, following that Korean legend’s footsteps from Germany over to English shores.

Cunha & Mbeumo hybrid: Man Utd keen to trigger release clause for PL star

Two of Manchester United’s biggest summer signings, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, are starting to get into full flow for the Red Devils.

Mbeumo, in particular, has started life at Old Trafford quickly, with eight goals and assists in 16 games across all competitions.

As for his Brazilian teammate, things haven’t been quite as smooth sailing. He’s struggled with a few minor injuries and hasn’t been at his best.

The United number ten only has one goal and one assist in 12 Premier League games, but has shown flashes of his best form.

United are not done there when it comes to strengthening in attack, and could dip back into the market this winter.

United’s latest attacking target

It is not just in attack that the Red Devils might be looking to strengthen their side, with midfield a focus area too.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

They are reportedly plotting to sign Elliot Anderson and are even linked with a sensational, if expensive, move for Jude Bellingham.

Looking further up the pitch, the Mancunian giants are linked with a move to sign Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo.

According to a report from TEAMtalk, United are able to meet the Ghanaian’s release clause and could make a move for him.

This, of course, will not be a cheap deal. Semenyo’s release clause is worth a reported £65m, a fee Ruben Amorim’s side ‘would be able to match’ this winter.

However, they would face tough competition for his signature, with Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City all interested in signing him, too.

Why Semenyo would be a good signing

There is no doubt about 25-year-old Semenyo’s quality. The versatile forward, who can operate on either flank, has been described this season as a “world-class” operator by Cherries teammate Justin Kluivert.

Indeed, the numbers he has put up are reflective of someone deemed an elite winger. This season in the Premier League, Bournemouth’s number 24 has played 14 games, scoring six goals and assisting a further three.

There have been some real standout moments for the 25-year-old, too. He’s scored twice and assisted the other in a 3-1 win at home to Fulham, and scored a sublime solo goal against Liverpool at Anfield on the opening day of the season.

United would love for the winger to have the same sort of impact as Mbeumo if he were to join. The Cameroonian attacker has been one of their most consistent players this season, even winning November’s Premier League player of the month award.

His most recent goal came on Monday against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Mbeumo and his new teammate Cunha can have a “big impact” on the club if they are able to “find a way to click,” according to United great Gary Neville.

If the Red Devils were to acquire Semenyo in the winter window, they would love for him to add to that threat with their two summer recruits.

You could certainly make a case that the Ghanaian is a hybrid of both players. At least, according to FBref, he has similar underlying numbers to Mbeumo over the last year and to Cunha in the top flight this term – noted as statistically similar both men in those respective fields.

Well, to factor in both, let’s look at numbers from the last two Premier League seasons. A standout number is their combined goals and assists per 90 minutes, with Semenyo averaging 0.5, Cunha 0.6 and Mbeumo 0.65.

Semenyo, Cunha & Mbeumo (per 90 mins)

3.26 progressive carries

4.6 ball recoveries

4.36 ball recoveries

3.98 ball recoveries

Stats from FBref

It is easy to see how the three players are similar, based on those numbers.

If Semenyo – who, like the United pair, is Premier League proven – can offer the goal and assist numbers of Mbeumo, and the threat carrying the ball which Cunha brings, he would be a dangerous addition to Amorim’s side.

£65m is not the most unreasonable fee for a player of his class, and United fans will be hoping he can have a quick impact at Old Trafford.

Shohei Ohtani Had Simple Two-Word Message After Dodgers Pitching Debut

Shohei Ohtani was back on the mound for his first pitching appearance in a Los Angeles Dodgers uniform on Monday, and while it wasn't his best outing, it marked a huge step forward as Ohtani looks to return to his remarkable two-way dominance.

The Dodgers star allowed one run on two hits in one inning in his first ever start for L.A. in Monday night's 6–3 win over the San Diego Padres at Dodgers Stadium. Of his 28 pitches, 16 were strikes and one four-seam fastball clocked in at 100.2 mph, tied for the team's second-fastest pitch of the season. At the plate, Ohtani went 2-for-4 with two RBIs as the designated hitter.

Ohtani celebrated his return to a big league mound by sharing a series of photos from Monday's win. He added a simple message in the caption: "I'm back."

The three-time MVP also shared his honest thoughts on his Dodgers pitching debut after the game:

"I did hit 100 today, so I want to see first where my body feels and how it reacts," Ohtani said. "But the expectation is for me to go once a week, hopefully to be able to go a little longer every time I'm out there so that the bullpen won't be so taxed."

Ohtani's return to pitching comes after a grueling years-long recovery journey following his second Tommy John surgery on his right elbow in September 2023. His last big league start came roughly a month before that in August, when he was still a member of the Los Angeles Angels.

Ohtani owns a career 3.02 ERA as a pitcher. In his second season with the Dodgers, Ohtani currently leads the National League with 25 homers and a 1.039 OPS.

Arsenal player ratings vs Aston Villa: How cruel is that?! Gallant Gunners throw bodies on the line but can't avoid late Emi Buendia-inflicted heartache as Eberechi Eze has a stinker

Emi Buendia struck with the last kick of the game to earn Aston Villa a 2-1 win against Arsenal and condemn Mikel Arteta's Premier League leaders to a first defeat in 19 games in all competitions. It looked like the Gunners had battled back to claim a hard-earned point when Leandro Trossard came off the bench to cancel out Matty Cash's first-half opener, but substitute Buendia was on hand to fire in a dramatic winner in the final seconds of stoppage time to move Villa to within three points of the top of the table.

It was an absolute sickener for Arsenal, who found themselves behind at half-time after Cash nipped in front of the ball-watching Eberechi Eze and fired a first-time effort through the legs of David Raya and into the net.

A clearly frustrated Arteta made a double change at the break, with Trossard and Viktor Gyokeres replacing Eze and Mikel Merino, and the changes made an immediate impact, with Trossard turning the ball in from close range after Martinez had saved from Bukayo Saka.

There were then chances for both teams to go in front, with Saka having one effort cleared off the line and substitute Donyell Malen firing wide at the other end. But as the clock ticked down it looked like both would had to settle for a point before Buendia's last-gasp heroics sent the home fans wild.

GOAL rates Arsenal's players from Villa Park…

AFPGoalkeeper & Defence

David Raya (7/10):

Made one superb save when Watkins looked certain to score. Bit unlucky with Cash's goal, which fizzed through his legs from close range. So unlucky to be beaten late on.

Ben White (7/10):

Bright performance. Maybe not as eye-catching as he was against Brentford, but more positive signs as he gets more minutes in the bank.

Jurrien Timber (7/10):

You can see he's adjusting to the centre-back role. There was a tendency for him to drift towards the right-back spot at times, but still put in a real shift.

Piero Hincapie (6/10):

Good battle with Watkins. Was aggressive and on the front foot. Should have cleared his lines late on instead of putting the ball out for a throw, that proved costly as Villa scored soon after.

Riccardo Calafiori (7/10):

Arsenal's best player, even in the first half when the team was really poor. Good defensively and typically impressive going forward. Looked shattered as the second half wore on.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportMidfield

Martin Zubimendi (7/10):

Solid as always. Did well in the heart of the midfield in a pretty chaotic game.

Declan Rice (7/10):

Produced one fabulous block in the first half when the score was still at 0-0. Had one shot just before the break that he should have done better with. Ran himself into the ground as always.

Martin Odegaard (6/10):

Had a good chance early on that he put straight at Martinez. Saw plenty of the ball, but often from deep positions. Good run and pass for Saka in the build-up to Trossard's goal.

Getty Images SportAttack

Bukayo Saka (7/10):

Had some good moments, but was unusually poor in possession at times. Far from his best, but did pop up with a crucial bit of play to set-up the equaliser. Unlucky to then not score himself, but his shot was cleared off the line.

Mikel Merino (5/10):

Has been so good of late, but was ineffective this afternoon. Never looked a threat and his link-up play just wasn't there. Replaced at half-time.

Eberechi Eze (4/10):

Bit of a passenger throughout. Never really got into the game and was caught ball-watching for the goal. Disappointing. Off at half-time.

Leandro Trossard (7/10):

Immediate impact. Introduced at half-time and popped up with the equaliser. Such a crucial player for Arteta.

Viktor Gyokeres (6/10):

Another half-time introduction which sparked an improvement. Just gave the Villa defence something extra to think about and stretched them with his runs.

Gabriel Martinelli (N/A):

On for the final few minutes.

Myles Lewis-Skelly (N/A):

Replaced Calafiori late on.

Mikel Arteta (6/10):

His half-time changes worked and so will be so disappointed by that crushing late goal.

Arne Slot delighted with Hugo Ekitike 'progress' after Liverpool brace as he praises striker's growth

Liverpool manager Arne Slot has hailed new signing Hugo Ekitike after he bagged another brace to secure a 2-0 win over Brighton in the Premier League on Saturday. The French striker now has 10 goals in all competitions for the Reds so far in 2025-26 and is starting to prove his worth following a big-money move from Eintracht Frankfurt in the summer transfer window.

  • Ekitike double downs Brighton

Ekitike took just 46 seconds to open the scoring against Brighton at Anfield. The Frenchman volleyed home an excellent opening goal to give the Reds the perfect start to the game on Saturday. Ekitike then headed home a corner from Mohamed Salah to seal all three points for the Merseysiders in a win that takes them up into sixth place in the table. Ekitike has now scored a brace in back-to-back Premier League games for Liverpool, earning big praise from his manager.

Slot thrilled with Ekitike's progress at Liverpool

"Slot told reporters: "Just before I took him off there was a moment, I don't know what happened, but I think he hardly could walk anymore because of cramp. What I see with him and I see this with all the players we've brought in this summer, they had to adapt to the Premier League, to that intensity, because they were all young. All the players we brought in are young players, except for Alex [Isak], but all the others are very young.

"So, adapting to the Premier League, that intensity, some of them had to adapt to the Premier League and [the] Champions League. I see all of them making progress in that. So, Hugo has cramp today but I can assure you that he did probably twice as much as in games in the beginning of the season where I had to take him off with cramp as well. That is what this league brings. If you cannot be so intense for such a long time, it's so hard to win a game of football because the best players, athletes, in the world play in this league, and we are trying to prepare them more and more, better and better for that – and I can see that progress with most of our signings, maybe all of them."

  • Ekitike enjoys 'great week' with Liverpool

Ekitike was a happy man after the win. The striker was also part of the Liverpool team that Inter in the Champions League in midweek and admits it's been a great seven days on the pitch for the Reds.

He told reporters: "We try to stick together, work together. Even today, it wasn't easy. At the end of the game we had to stay compact, stick together, because when we are in that position it's difficult to get a result. Happy today, because I think we deserved [it]. We did a great week and let's continue. When you play for Liverpool you just have to win games. So, [it's] hard to answer. When you see the games coming, we are Liverpool [and] we need to win."

    What next for Liverpool?

Liverpool will surely be hoping Ekitike can continue in the goals, particularly now the Reds will be without Salah for some time due to his involvement at the Africa Cup of Nations with Egypt. The talisman's future at the club is also in doubt following his recent criticism of the club and comments that he felt he had been "thrown under the bus by Liverpool." Saudi Pro League sides are reportedly interested in Salah, and it remains to be seen if he will play for the club again.
