Howe must immediately drop 4/10 Newcastle dud who was outclassed by Paqueta

When Jacob Murphy smashed home a fierce effort after just four minutes, Newcastle United must have already been dreaming that a comprehensive win was in the bag, away at a struggling West Ham United side.

Unfortunately for the Magpies, though, their grip on a Premier League win would be very weak, as an inspired and passionate Hammers comeback would hand Nuno Espirito Santo his first win in the dug-out, as Eddie Howe’s men had to stomach a demoralising 3-1 defeat.

Lucas Paqueta would get the hosts initially back into the tie with a stunning first-half effort, before a mixture of Newcastle’s bad luck – which saw Sven Botman score a disastrous own goal – and West Ham’s never-say-die attitude, courtesy of a last-minute strike by Thomas Soucek, gifted the home outfit a much-needed win.

While Paqueta was undoubtedly back to his classy best, many of Howe’s dependable first-team faces let their manager down big time, as the Toon now remain stuck in an unsatisfactory 13th spot.

Newcastle's notable underperformers vs West Ham

Very few Newcastle players could trudge off at the end of the 3-1 defeat, enthused by their personal performance.

Malick Thiaw, arguably, put in a commendable shift, but he was very much let down by the likes of the aforementioned Botman and Emil Krafth next to him at the back, with the stand-in number 17 even being hooked off at the half-time mark, after winning zero duels during a calamitous first 45 minutes, per Sofascore.

Dan Burn also looked ropey throughout as a makeshift option on the left flank, but he somehow survived the full 90. Nick Woltemade, on the other hand, would also fall victim to Howe’s half-time wrath, with the German striker only managing a weak 14 touches of the ball, before William Osula came on in his place.

Osula wasn’t any better in a second-half showing that was simply described bleakly as not having “one positive” according to Toon great Alan Shearer, with Nick Pope also looking rather shaky, as he failed to palm Paqueta’s stinging strike away, before further not covering himself in much glory when Soucek’s scrappy effort was somehow bundled home.

However, one of Newcastle’s biggest underperformers is yet to be mentioned, with the midfielder in question outclassed throughout by Paqueta, away from just the Brazilian scoring West Ham’s memorable opener.

The 4/10 Newcastle star who was outclassed by Paqueta

Paqueta was in dire need of showing the London Stadium masses why he keeps being selected week in, week out, with his top-drawer performance against Newcastle silencing the critics, no doubt.

Indeed, the hot-and-cold number ten would battle hard throughout the 3-1 win to ensure Nuno collected his first victory as Hammers boss, with seven duels won. On top of that, his sensational strike, which is his third Premier League goal of the season already, reminded everyone of his split-second ability to change games.

While Paqueta was lively and instrumental to West Ham gaining a rare home success, Joelinton continued his ongoing demise from the middle of the park, as can be seen looking at the table above.

Journalist Luke Edwards would label Newcastle’s overall performance as having “no energy”, and that was very evident in the no-show served up by Paqueta’s fellow compatriot, as the declining number seven won zero tackles, alongside also winning only 42% of his duels.

Even West Ham’s Freddie Potts would outclass Joelinton in this regard, as the homegrown Hammers prodigy won three tackles and five duels on what was his first Premier League start of the campaign to date.

Only mustering up one effort on the West Ham goal, too, it’s clear that the 29-year-old was way off Paqueta’s high standards throughout, culminating in Newcastle World’s Jordan Cronin dishing him out a low 4/10 post-match rating.

Howe will have to consider dropping some of his long-standing loyalties he holds with many of his well-established servants if Newcastle is to bounce back with a win against Athletic Club in the Champions League on Wednesday night, with Anthony Gordon another who could be at risk of being axed, after the aforementioned Edwards dubbed his first-half efforts in East London as “awful”.

But, Joelinton will surely be the most fearful about his first team spot moving forward after being upstaged by Paqueta, as a refreshed side potentially takes to the field against the visitors from Spain mid-week.

Taylor, Williams back in Zimbabwe's T20I squad to face Sri Lanka

Brendan Taylor, Zimbabwe’s veteran wicketkeeper-batter, is back in their T20I squad, more than three years after he last played in the format. Taylor, who returned from a three-and-a-half-year ICC ban in August, was named in Zimbabwe’s 16-man squad for the upcoming series against Sri Lanka. The other notable inclusion in the squad was Sean Williams, who is back in the T20I fold after more than a year.Taylor had been banned from all cricket in January 2022, for failing to report an approach from alleged corruptors without delay. With the ban ending earlier this year, Taylor subsequently returned to the international fold in the Bulawayo Test against New Zealand, before playing the ODI series against Sri Lanka last month. Taylor’s last T20I, though, was in April 2021, against Pakistan in Harare.Williams, meanwhile, had previously played a T20I in May 2024, and he’s set for a comeback into the format ahead of the Africa regional qualifiers later this month for the T20 World Cup in 2026. Zimbabwe will be competing in the tournament alongside Botswana, Kenya, Malawi, Namibia, Nigeria, Tanzania and Uganda, with two World Cup spots on the line.Zimbabwe had missed out on qualifying for the T20 World Cup 2024 despite 20 teams participating in the tournament, as they couldn’t finish in the top two of the Africa Region Qualifier after suffering losses against Namibia and Uganda.Among other changes for the T20Is against Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe left out Newman Nyamhuri, Wessly Madhevere, Vincent Masekesa and Tafadzwa Tsiga from the squad that played the tri-series against South Africa and New Zealand in July. Apart from Taylor and Williams, those back in the squad were fast bowler Brad Evans and top-order batter Tadiwanashe Marumani.Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka have so far faced each other in only six T20Is, the last of which was in January 2024. Forget Endo: Liverpool star is looking like "Fabinho in his final season"

The need for results over the coming weeks has been heightened. Arne Slot made a telling comment on his hopes of Liverpool progressing deep into the Carabao Cup when fielding a much-rotated team with a bench full of youngsters (average age of 19) against Crystal Palace on Wednesday evening.

The Eagles won 3-0, their third win over the Reds this term, and that’s now six losses from seven matches in all competitions for Slot’s side, who are very much in crisis mode.

The Dutch boss had turned his attention toward the daunting run of upcoming fixtures before the opening whistle screeched in midweek, and now there is not an emphasis but an expectation that wins will be struck to stop the rot and turn back toward the compelling title defence that was anticipated after a summer of record-breaking spending.

If we can take a sliver of optimism from this abject run of form, it’s that, having played an overload of matches away from home, four of the next five take place down Anfield Road, having lost on home soil to Palace on Wednesday too.

There simply has to be a swift upswing. Looking at it from a wider lens, though, it may well be that some Redmen have entered the final phase of their careers on Merseyside.

The Liverpool players Hughes needs to sell

Sporting director Richard Hughes was lauded after his emphatic summer transfer window, overseeing a staggering rebuild at Liverpool after Slot defied expectations to win the Premier League in his first year at the helm.

But the summer upheaval has sent it all in a bit of a spin. Still. Though we must reserve judgement on under-firing newbies such as Milos Kerkez and Florian Wirtz, there are certain veterans at the club who aren’t pulling their weight.

Take, for example, Joe Gomez, who is Liverpool’s longest-serving player but now shows the rust of a man who has been afforded few chances to impress in recent years, with injuries and superiorities elsewhere in defence keeping him on the fringe.

Against Palace, the England international struggled to impress, lacking any semblance of command in a backline that was without the calming presence of Virgil van Dijk.

Wataru Endo has been something of a stalwart since arriving at the club for a smart fee in 2023, but the 32-year-old’s role has diminished as his time in England has dragged on.

Stodgy athleticism and limitations on the ball have kept the Japan captain from being anything more than a tackle-first substitute under Slot’s wing, and now it appears he is approaching the end of an illustrious couple of years in Liverpool, unable to offer a viable solution at number six.

Liverpool should have better options in the middle of the park, in any case, but that doesn’t appear to be so as the 2025/26 campaign rolls into its fourth month.

The Liverpool midfielder who's failing Slot

We’ve been here before. Jurgen Klopp’s injury-hit Premier League champions were overwhelmed across the 2020/21 campaign, and scrambled to salvage Champions League football toward the end of the term.

But the deterioration of 2022/23 was more concerning, with the likes of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho flattering to deceive in the middle of the park. The Reds needed to rebuild, and so fashioned together the title-winning engine room of the past few years.

bruno-guimaraes-fabinho-liverpool-opinion

The standout of that rebuild has been Alexis Mac Allister, instrumental to lifting Liverpool back off the ground in 2023/24, after joining from Brighton for around £35m, and then revelling in winning the Premier League last season.

Now, he’s fallen off a proverbial cliff, with his sedentary performances in midfield not those of an elite, robust midfielder. One Liverpool content creator actually said it “looks like Fabinho’s season”, when the Brazilian slumped from his formerly imperious level as the midfield anchor, his legs gone.

The data does suggest that Mac Allister lacks his former vim and vigour, but given that he is only 26 years old and regarded as a “superstar” of a midfielder, as has been said by pundit Joe Cole, this is deeply worrying for those of a red persuasion.

For Fabinho, though only 29 at the time of his £40m transfer to Al-Ittihad, had played 219 high-octane, turbo-charged matches as the heartbeat of Klopp’s Liverpool team, and going from 1.25 carries per game in his first season in England to an average of only 0.51 in 2022/23 emphasises his loss of athleticism.

For a player of Mac Allister’s all-encompassing midfield quality, it’s imperative that Slot gets a tune out of him once again. If the Argentine does not click into gear this season, Liverpool will struggle to hit their stride.

There will be an expectation around Anfield that Mac Allister’s dip in form is not permanent, and that he’s back on his A-game before long.

However, this startling drop-off dredges up unwanted memories of Fabinho’s own fall from grace at Anfield, and Slot will be gravely hoping that lightning hasn’t struck twice on the Liverpool squad.

Another Chiesa: Slot's treatment of Liverpool star is a "sackable offence"

Liverpool have a shrewd solution to one of their biggest problems this season.

Caitlin Clark Makes More History, Highlighting Key Trends in Sports Collectibles

Professional Sports Authenticator—commonly known as PSA, one of the largest and most well-known collectibles grading companies—has released data on the kinds of cards collectors sent to them for grading in 2024.

Caitlin Clark, who has had a historical 2024, made even more history in this department, becoming the first female basketball player in PSA history to crack the top 10 in most graded cards.

Clark, who ranked sixth among all basketball athletes, only narrowly missed out on the overall top 10. Behind her in the rankings of top-collected female athletes were Paige Bueckers, Angel Reese, JuJu Watkins, and Cameron Brink. Overall, women's basketball cards were sent in for grading by hobbyists at a rate 10 times higher than what PSA graded in 2023. Among other sought-after rookies, she ranked highly, with a higher volume than Paul Skenes, who was a major riser in the MLB side of collectibles.

Non-basketball athletes in the top-10 of women's sports were Alex Morga (soccer), Katie Ledecky (swimming) and Serena Williams (tennis).

Per PSA, here are the top-10 athletes in terms of volume of cards graded in 2024:

Half of the list of overall top athletes returned to the top 10 from 2023: Ohtani, Jordan, Bryant, James and Griffey. After four NFL players made the top 10 last year, only two made it in 2024.

Other top basketball players included Brandon Miller, Stephen Curry, Luka Doncic, and Shaquille O'Neal. Basketball was the biggest riser, with a 77% year-to-year jump in grading volume. Hockey and football trailed at second and third overall in growth.

Wembanyama highlighted international athletes graded by PSA with 407,000 cards after just under 28,000 in 2023. It was a huge year for Wembanyama in the hobby, with him even highlighting the debut of one high-end Topps product, Mercury.

Athletics Ink OF Lawrence Butler to Lengthy Contract Extension After 2024 Breakout

In the wake of a breakout season, Athletics right fielder and designated hitter Lawrence Butler appears set to stick around for the foreseeable future.

The Sacramento-based team has signed Butler to a seven-year contract extension worth $65.5 million, according to a Thursday night report from Jeff Passan of ESPN. The deal includes a year covered by a team option.

Butler, 24, is coming off a breakout 2024 in the Athletics' final season in Oakland. The Burlington, N.J. native slashed a rock-solid .262/.317/.490 with 22 home runs and 57 RBIs—bettering his numbers from a 42-game cameo in 2023.

Since its relocation, the Sacramento team—aiming to move to Las Vegas by 2028—has shown an uncharacteristic willingness to spend on its roster. The Athletics gave pitcher Luis Severino a three-year, $67 million contract on Dec. 6, for instance.

The Sacramento team is scheduled to open its 2025 season on March 27 against the Seattle Mariners.

Konstas, Kellaway, Connolly make India A toil on opening day

Sam Konstas, the incumbent Australia opener, strengthened his case for the Ashes by hitting a hundred in a session for Australia A against India A in Lucknow. Campbell Kellaway, who is also in the opening mix, contributed 88 off 97 balls in a 198-run opening stand, which established Australia A’s dominance.Related

For India A, Harsh Dubey, the Vidarbha left-arm fingerspinner, took three wickets, including that of Konstas for 109 off 144 balls.Konstas, 19, made a welcome return to form after managing only 50 runs in six innings in the Caribbean earlier this year. After rain had washed out the first session at the Ekana Stadium, Kellaway and Konstas hit the ground running for the visitors. After bringing up his fifty off 86 balls, Konstas raced to a century of 122 balls. He got the landmark with a six over long-off off offspinner Tanush Kotian just before tea. All three sixes from Konstas came in the arc between long-on and deep midwicket against spinners.”I thought I had to face quite a few demons mentally just trying to get through that and, yeah, obviously different challenges and just trying to adapt to the conditions,” Konstas said after play. “So super stoked and hopefully can build on from that.Sam Konstas and Campbell Kellaway had a huge partnership•Tanuj/UPCA

“I thought early on [the pitch] had a bit of nip and just trying to get through that and then spin wise it didn’t spin as much. So just backing my instincts and yeah, just trying to rinse and repeat each ball with my process.”Speaking on Wednesday morning, Australia coach Andrew McDonald lauded the pre-season work Konstas has put in but continued to stress that Sheffield Shield runs would carry most weight in selection.”To come from the West Indies, to go away and work on your game, that winter investment, to get an immediate return gives a lot of confidence,” McDonald told SEN radio. “A lot of our game is about confidence and believing in what you’re doing.”To get that feedback in that short space of time is incredibly rewarding for the player and coaches that have worked on that. And now, it’s the ability to sustain that.”India A finally separated the opening pair in the 38th over when Punjab fast bowler Gurnoor Brar dismissed Kellaway. Dubey and Khaleel Ahmed then made further inroads as Australia A slipped from 198 for 0 to 224 for 4.Cooper Connolly and Liam Scott, though, added 109 in 24.2 overs to re-establish Australia’s command. Dubey struck again, just before stumps, to cut Connolly’s innings short on 70 off 84 balls. Scott (47*) and wicketkeeper-batter Josh Philippe (3*) were both unbeaten at stumps on the first day in Lucknow.

£47m spent; CF "monster" replaces Beto: Everton's dream XI after January

It was crucial that Everton put the brakes on their season for a third time with a win. And win the Toffees did. The Hill Dickinson returned to form as David Moyes oversaw a professional victory over Fulham in the Premier League.

The 2-0 win marked the end of a three-match winless run for Everton, lifting them to 11th in the standings. It’s all rather congested in the middle of the table right now, but Everton know they need to make improvements if they wish to beat off mid-table competition and push for a place in the top half.

And it’s becoming apparent that external solutions will be needed, thus turning our attention toward the looming January transfer window.

Where Everton are looking to strengthen

Everton’s winter transfer plans are currently rather nebulous, but that’s only natural given there is still a month and a half until the January market opens for business.

What is clear is that Moyes will be looking to strengthen, and the Friedkin Group are ready to back him in this endeavour. More detailed plans might be unknown, but it’s obvious that the Toffees will look to sign a striker, with Beto and £27m summer recruit Thierno Barry both toiling this term, one goal between them in the Premier League.

Were the Merseysiders playing their football with a reliable bagsman at number nine, it would not be unreasonable to suggest that European contention would already be a conversation.

That could still be the case, with a few tweaks. It’s not just up top where Everton need to remedy their tactical creases. Both full-back berths have been focus points of criticism this season, with Jake O’Brien industrious at right-back but out of position nonetheless, naturally a centre-back.

Jake O'Brien in action for Everton

Let’s have a look at how Everton could shape up after a window of dealings.

Moyes' dream XI after January

Jordan Pickford will, of course, remain between the sticks for Everton, having extended until 2029 last month.

The return of Jarrad Branthwaite to fitness will also feel like a new signing for side who have had to make do at the rear this term. Praise must be placed at Michael Keane’s feet, the English defender having completed a U-turn before the end of last season, signing a new deal and starting every Premier League match of the campaign.

It is indeed the wide defenders who need changing, and Everton could act on their interest in Sevilla’s Juanlu Sanchez, with an October report suggesting the Blues have prepared a £17m bid ahead of January.

Sanchez, 23, is a powerful and balanced player, and in La Liga this season, he ranks among the top 14% of positional peers for progressive carries and the top 16% for successful take-ons per 90, as per FBref.

This would be an interesting deal to add width and dynamism down Everton’s right side, but it could be a move that is overshadowed by a loan bid for Arsenal’s Myles Lewis-Skelly.

Lewis-Skelly’s reduced role in Mikel Arteta’s title-challenging team this season is not a reflection of his skillset but an emphasis on the Gunners’ remarkable rise in recent years. The 19-year-old was very much a part of that last year, his performances leading The Athletic’s Aaron Catterson-Reid to describe him as a “£100m footballer”.

Arteta has yet to name the prospect from the opening in the top flight this season, and this has given rise to chatter about a winter loan move. A number of unnamed Premier League clubs are monitoring the situation, and it’s more than likely that Everton are among that mix.

Such additions would have a marked impact on Everton’s prospects this season, giving Iliman Ndiaye and Jack Grealish more freedom and security on the attacking wings. Grealish is only a loanee himself, but there are hopes that a permanent deal can be engineered in 2026.

That leaves the big one. One of Beto or Barry could leave the Hill Dickinson this winter, especially when Everton have shown signs of interest in Al-Ahli striker Ivan Toney, who left the Premier League for Saudi Arabia in 2024.

Toney, 29, is one of England’s most talented and dangerous marksmen, and he had been coveted by Chelsea last summer, before the stars aligned for a big pay packet overseas.

The Athletic have confirmed that the former Brentford man is a player of interest heading into the January market, albeit with a host of complications relating to finances and the thick competition for such a signature at the season’s midpoint.

This would be an ambitious move, but one which could pay off handsomely if the Merseyside club play their cards right. The £30m-rated Toney, after all, is intrigued by the possibility of returning to his homeland ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Instrumental in propping the Gtech up in the Premier League, Toney was described by Thomas Frank as being a “monster” of a striker, not only deadly in front of goal but dynamic and intelligent too.

It won’t be easy, wrestling the £400k-per-week Three Lions star from the Gulf region and beating the inevitable competition for his signature, but Everton need a striker, and Moyes may just canvass a compelling proposal to the proven Premier League star.

We can say without question that Everton have enjoyed an upswing in results and performances since Moyes replaced Sean Dyche at the helm. But Everton need more. There’s a bluntness to the squad’s attack, and by reenergising the widths and placing a robust and hungry option at the focal front point, Moyes might just pull off another special success.

Man Utd have a "deadly" academy star who's another Fernandes in the making

Ruben Amorim has stuck by his infamous 3-4-2-1 system at Manchester United and it appears as though it is finally yielding results.

The Portuguese manager has been in charge at Old Trafford for a year now, and although things have not gone exactly to plan, his side have now gone unbeaten in their last four Premier League games.

Amorim has finally begun to settle on his best lineup. That has seen summer signings Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha lock down the two number 10 positions in his system, with Mason Mount providing excellent competition.

However, those two signings have ensured Bruno Fernandes will remain in his deeper pivot role, rather than closer to goal.

Where Fernandes is best suited under Amorim

It has certainly been a topic of hot debate in Amoirm’s year-long tenure in the hot seat at Old Trafford. Fernandes is a number 10 by trade, and played his best football as close to goal as possible, in and around the penalty box.

That season came in 2020/21, when he scored and assisted 29 Premier League goals in 37 games. He was one of the deadliest attackers in world football at that stage. So, you might think it is logical for Amorim to play him as a number 10.

Well, that is not how the United manager sees it. In fact, he explained that his skipper operates in the pivot because he “is the right man to start with the tempo of the play.”

United legend Paul Scholes sees it differently, and says “there is no doubt” Fernandes should be playing as a 10 because he “is the most creative player on the team.”

In 51 games under the tutelage of Amorim, the Red Devils’ number 8 has played 30 games in the pivot, and 21 as a number 10. That certainly shows just how much their manager favours him in a deeper role.

Interestingly, United have another player coming through in a similar mould to Fernandes, and it will be interesting to see where Amorim chooses to play him.

Man United's in-house Fernandes successor

It is clear that Fernandes is viewed as a pivot player by Amorim, despite Scholes’ view and the success he has achieved in previous seasons. With the two number 10 positions nailed down by Cunha and Mbeumo, players may have to adapt.

That could certainly be the case for United academy star Jack Moorhouse. The 19-year-old is currently on loan at Leyton Orient, but has previously impressed for the Red Devils’ youth sides.

It has been an impressive start to life in professional football for Moorhouse. Described as a “deadly” player by United academy page on X, Academy Scoop, the Republic of Ireland U21 international has played 14 games for Orient, scoring and assisting one goal apiece.

As it happens, Moorhouse has already been described as someone who is “ideal for Amorim’s left 10 role” at United by football analyst Ben Mattinson. He has operated behind the striker more often than not for the U23s at the club, too, making five appearances in that role, scoring twice and assisting one.

Interestingly, he’s played a bit deeper for Orient this season, showing excellent versatility. He shone in a box-to-box role against Peterborough United, creating two chances and completing three out of three dribbles.

There are certainly similarities between Moorhouse and Fernandes. Both creative midfielders, they can operate in advanced roles and a bit deeper. It would be intriguing to see where Amorim would utilise him in the first team.

One thing is for sure, the 19-year-old possesses great talent. If the Red Devils are looking for an in-house successor to their “Portuguese Magnifico,” they might be able to find him in their famous Carrington academy.

Manchester United could yet improve further in attack under Amorim’s wing.
