Celtic: Kenny Dalglish drops Cameron Carter-Vickers verdict

Celtic legend Kenny Dalglish has praised the attitude of new Hoops signing Cameron Carter-Vickers following his loan move to the club from Tottenham Hotspur.

The Lowdown: Carter-Vickers was on the periphery at Tottenham

Spending last campaign on loan at Bournemouth, the 23-year-old made 26 appearances on the English south coast, registering one goal and one assist [Transfermarkt].

Despite his best efforts, the USA international has made just five senior appearances for Spurs across his time at the club. Unsurprisingly, he is once again out of favour in N17 and was subsequently loaned out to Scottish giants Celtic on deadline day with an option to buy [Glasgow Times].

He has now garnered praise from one of the most honourable men in Celtic history.

The Latest: Dalglish believes Carter-Vickers will be a success at Celtic

Writing in his Sunday Post column, Dalglish lauded the American owing to what he saw of him at Tottenham, saying:

“Celtic rounded off their business by adding Georgios Giakoumakis, Jota and Cameron Carter-Vickers to the squad on the final day. All three look the part, and will increase the quality in the squad.

“I watched Carter-Vickers in action for Tottenham’s reserves in a game against Liverpool, and he looked an excellent professional. His attitude was spot-on.

“I think the day before, he had been an unused sub for the first-team, but still travelled to Merseyside in an exemplary frame of mind.”

The Verdict: Carter-Vickers looks to be a solid signing for the Hoops

In offering his thoughts of the Southend native, Dalglish makes an encouraging assessment regarding the suitability of Carter-Vickers as he begins to be incorporated into the Celtic framework.

Last term, he showed his solidity within the Bournemouth backline, winning 2.8 aerial duels per match across the campaign [WhoScored].

Ange Postecoglou demands clean distribution from the back in order to initiate offensive passages. Capable of performing this function, the American managed a passing accuracy rate of 84% in the English Championship in 2020/21 [WhoScored].

Now coming into a pivotal period of his career, Carter-Vickers will be hoping that he can vindicate Bhoys icon Dalglish by becoming a key player at Parkhead in 2021/22.

Pundit has high hopes for Nottingham Forest’s Joao Carvalho

Nigel Jemson reckons that playing regular football could lead to Joao Carvalho finally loving up to the hype at Nottingham Forest, with the former Reds man even claiming that the Portuguese would be more suited to Premier League football.

Carvalho joined in a club-record fee three years ago, but he’s been unable to justify that fee – and scored just six goals in his first two seasons at the City Ground.

Having lost his place in the side towards the back end of the 2019-2020 campaign, the 24-year-old was loaned out to Spanish second division side Almeria.

And despite failing to score in 36 appearances in all competitions, Carvalho has returned to Forest and looks to be part of Chris Hughton’s plans moving forward.

He was an unused substitute against Coventry City on the opening-day but showed his true quality by netting both goals in the Carabao Cup first-round victory over Bradford City on Wednesday.

Carvalho has endured a difficult three years with Forest, but Jemson is confident that with a full pre-season behind him, his fortunes could soon be about to change.

He exclusively told The Transfer Tavern:

“I’m a big fan of his, I like him. I think he would do better in the Premier League than in the Championship.

“I hope that he came back to pre-season with an attitude to make people realise what a good player he is. If he’s playing regularly, I think he’s going to be a superb addition, I really do.”

Sky reporter drops Kane to Man City update

Speaking on Sky Sports (via Football Daily), reporter Kaveh Solhekol has now made a £75 million claim involving Tottenham Hotspur, Harry Kane and Manchester City.

The Lowdown: City eyeing Kane swoop…

As confirmed by Pep Guardiola yesterday, Premier League champions Man City are definitely interested in signing the superstar striker this summer, but he admits it is all down to Spurs’ stance on negotiating (BBC).

The forward himself is said to prefer Eastlands above all other destinations and is widely believed to want a move away from north London before August 31.

Sky reporter Solhekol, bringing the latest, has shared an update on the saga whilst dropping a £75m claim.

The Latest: Solhekol makes £75m claim…

Solhekol, speaking live to the broadcast giant (via Football Daily), reiterates Tottenham’s firm stance that Kane is not for sale this summer.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-gossip/” title=”Tottenham latest gossip!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

However, in this on air message, he details the kind of figures that City have been mentioning when it comes to a swoop for the 28-year-old.

“It’s a free world, you can make an offer, but your offer has to be realistic,” explained the journalist.

“The kind of figures that Manchester City have been talking about, I’ve been told that it’s £75 million plus some players, Spurs are just not interested in that.

“They’re not interested in £75m, they are not interested in players as part of the deal either, as far as they’re concerned they are in a very strong position.”

The Verdict: Consider it?

£75m is arguably a low-ball figure on it’s own, especially considering he won the Premier League Golden Boot last season and captained England to a Euro 2020 final.

Even factoring in his age, City will have to up the ante if they seriously wish to tempt chairman Daniel Levy into selling his prized asset before deadline day.

If that fee does indeed include the offer of players, however, it should at the very least get Levy and managing director Fabio Paratici thinking.

Aymeric Laporte, for example, would be a stellar defensive partner for new signing Cristian Romero as Spurs reportedly aim to add at least two new centre-backs for Nuno Espirito Santo.

The Spaniard has been called ‘incredible’ and the ‘best left central defender in the world’ by Guardiola and Tottenham could realistically afford his £120,000-per-week salary (spotrac.com) – especially if they offload more players.

Acquisitions of his calibre, who could be included in a possible swap, should be considered as Kane’s desire to leave grows stronger.

The Big Picture

Ancient history favours Pakistan, but more modern events give India the edge going into Saturday’s encounter. Pakistan have usually fared better in ODI finals between these traditional rivals, winning five of the seven tournaments where the two sides met in the title clash – but the last of those was in 1999. India have had the upper hand in recent matches, winning five of their last seven games and with their rampaging top-order firing, have steamrollered their way to the final.A victory on Saturday would add to Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s growing reputation as an ODI captain, having already tasted success at home against Pakistan and in the CB series in Australia. On the other hand, Shoaib Malik is yet to win a ODI series against significant opposition since beating Sri Lanka last May. His side’s 12-game winning streak was emphatically snapped by a 140-run defeat in the league match against India, prompting a stinging and public rebuke from PCB chairman Nasim Ashraf. While this is a battle between arch-rivals, the frequency of matches between the two sides has taken the edge off this game. As Shahid Afridi said, “some of the (magic) has gone out of the atmosphere and build-up.” A win here, though, will be the perfect tonic ahead of the Asia Cup.

Form guide – India

Last five matches: WWWWW (most recent first)
Player to watch: Praveen Kumar’s ability to move the new ball both ways has made him a tricky customer for batsmen to deal with. He dismissed Adam Gilchrist and Ricky Ponting cheaply in both finals of the CB series and continued the good work in this series – running through the Pakistan top order and stifling the Bangladesh batsmen. With India’s batting in top form, another incisive spell from Praveen could prove very costly for Pakistan.

Form guide – Pakistan

Last five matches: LWWWW (most recent first)
Player to watch: Mohammad Yousuf has perfected the art of scoring quickly while rarely seeming flustered or hurried at the crease. An array of conventional shots has ensured the runs keep flowing with minimal risks. He’s averaging a phenomenal 81.76 in his last 21 matches, and with Younis Khan and Afridi not in the best of form, he is the lynchpin of the Pakistan middle-order.

Team news

With the team progressing smoothly to the finals, India may not tinker too much with their combination. The only change could be Ishant Sharma coming back in place of RP Singh.India: (probable) 1 Virender Sehwag, 2 Gautam Gambhir, 3 Rohit Sharma, 4 Yuvraj Singh, 5 Mahendra Singh Dhoni (capt & wk), 6 Suresh Raina, 7 Yusuf Pathan, 8 Irfan Pathan, 9 Piyush Chawla, 10 Praveen Kumar, 11 Ishant Sharma.

Besides Malik and Afridi, Fawad Alam is the only spinner in the squad and he might not be risked in the final as he hasn’t made much of an impact in his limited chances at the international level. Pakistan are likely persist with four fast bowlers in their XI.Pakistan: (probable) 1 Salman Butt, 2 Kamran Akmal (wk), 3 Younis Khan, 4 Mohammad Yousuf, 5 Misbah-ul-Haq, 6 Shoaib Malik (capt), 7 Shahid Afridi, 8 Sohail Tanvir, 9, Umar Gul, 10 Wahab Riaz / Sohail Khan, 11 Iftikhar Anjum.

Pitch and conditions

The pitches used in the tournament have come in for praise from Geoff Lawson, the Pakistan coach. “The ball has not spun much but it has good bounce. It has been a terrific pitch to play on,” he said. India’s coach Gary Kirsten was also satisfied with the pitch and felt it would remain good for batting through the match, reducing the importance of the toss.

Stats and trivia

  • Gautam Gambhir averaged 25.05 in his first 20 ODIs and a splendid 50.04 in his previous 29 games.
  • Twelve of Shoaib Malik’s 33 fifty-plus ODI scores have come against India.
  • Younis Khan has faced only one ball in this tournament but has been dismissed twice.
  • The last final in Bangladesh featuring Pakistan and India had a thrilling conclusion with Hrishikesh Kanitkar slamming a boundary to clinch it off the penultimate ball.

    Quotes

“We are not concerned by emails but about how the players perform tomorrow.”
Lawson puts up a brave front.
“It’s always a great clash and we know it’s not going to be the same as it was the other night. It’s going to be a different Pakistan team out there.”
Kirsten warns his team against complacency

  • Rangers: Fashion Sakala has minor injury

The Athletic journalist Jordan Campbell has revealed that Fashion Sakala missed Glasgow Rangers’ clash with Dundee United on Saturday with a minor injury.

    The Lowdown: Gers suffer defeat

After going 38 games unbeaten in the Premiership last term (thefishy.co.uk), it took the Gers just two matches to suffer their first league defeat of this campaign (Sky Sports).

They were beaten 1-0 by Dundee United, a game in which new signing Sakala did not feature.

    The Latest: Sakala injured

In an article for The Athletic covering the Gers’ loss to the Tangerines, Campbell provided an update on the Zambia international.

He revealed that £3.6m-valued Sakala (Transfermarkt) suffered a minor injury and was therefore not included in the matchday squad as a result.

    The Verdict: Worrying

This is worrying news for the Gers. While the sample size is not yet too big, the only match in three outings the Gers have managed to win this season is also the only one Sakala has started (Transfermarkt). While the defeat to Dundee United is far from positive, it is the impact that his potential absence could have on their next match which will likely be playing on Steven Gerrard’s mind.

The Gers face Malmo in the return leg of their Champions League third qualifying round tie on Tuesday. They lost the first match 2-1 in Sweden and therefore need to win at Ibrox to progress to the next stage. Gerrard will surely be hoping Sakala will be available, but in light of Campbell’s revelation of a minor injury for the 24-year-old, it remains to be seen whether he can play in the fixture.

In other news, Rangers are said to be ready to listen to offers for this man.

Watford to rival Leeds for Cornet signing

Leeds United reportedly face Premier League competition in the battle to sign Maxwel Cornet this summer, with Watford showing an interest in snapping him up.

The Lowdown: Cornet linked with Leeds move

The Lyon left-back has been linked with a move to Elland Road in recent times, being seen as someone who could strengthen the Whites’ squad.

A move is yet to come to fruition, though, and Junior Firpo has since arrived from Barcelona.

    [freshpress-quiz id=“359346″]

The Latest: Watford emerge as rivals

According to Foot Mercato [via Sport Witness], Watford are now also interested in signing Cornet, with Leeds also still mentioned as a suitor.

It is stated that the 24-year-old is ‘being followed by a few British teams’, but he will stay put with Lyon if the right offer doesn’t come along.

    [web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-8/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Is there any need for him?

While the £10.8m-rated Cornet is a left-back of much attacking quality – he scored twice and registered five assists in Ligue 1 last season – Firpo has signed now and there doesn’t seem a need to bring in another left-back.

The hope is that Leif Davis continues to mature and will be able deputy for the Brazilian, meaning that funds can be spent on other parts of the squad.

Having both Firpo and Cornet battling for playing time may sound healthy, but both will be expecting to be first-choice and it may become a needlessly tricky situation for Marcelo Bielsa if he ends up needing to choose one over the other.

Players' association will be key player in New Zealand cricket

New Zealand’s cricket players’ association is going to be a very significant factor in the short-to-medium term on the cricket scene here, according to retired wicket-keeper Adam Parore.

Photograph © CricInfoNew Zealand’s cricket players’ association is going to be a very significant factor in the short-to-medium term on the cricket scene here, according to retired wicket-keeper Adam Parore. In Christchurch to promote his recently-released book The Wicked-Keeper, Parore said the association was long overdue and would be crucial to matters of player fitness issues, scheduling and longevity of careers.”It will be nice for players to have a voice in issues that directly affect them. There is a huge wealth of knowledge among the players now and they are New Zealand Cricket’s [NZC] greatest resource,” he said.Parore didn’t think there would be an advocacy role for the Association in the event of a repetition of problems that occurred with coaching and management when Glenn Turner was appointed coach of the side for a second term.”That was more just a mistake, a bad choice, and I don’t think New Zealand Cricket would make that sort of mistake under the stewardship of Martin Snedden and his team,” he said.Changes to the administration of the game, stemming in part from the furore that developed firstly in South Africa under Geoff Howarth but after that in India and the West Indies under Turner, had also resulted in vastly better conditions for the players.”Expectations have increased too, but players are reasonably well looked after now. We are a long way along the line from 1994/95,” he said.Such was the state of the side now that if Turner returned as coach there wouldn’t be an issue with him now, he said.”There was a lack of maturity and experience, from me in particular, and it was a volatile mix,” Parore said.Despite some of the controversies of his career, Parore does have 201 wicket-keeping dismissals to his name and anyone looking to emulate that feat will have to have done the foundation work between the ages of 15 and 22 years. That’s the time he feels is vital for players to get their bodies in shape for the role required of them.It was to do with “muscle memory” so that further down the track the work load to maintain fitness did not have to be so great. As for the future, Parore believes any hopes New Zealand have of success in next year’s World Cup in South Africa are dependent on Chris Cairns.”If he is 100% fit then New Zealand are a good show,” he said.Having Shane Bond’s speed to call on was another asset.”He is a huge factor and the sole reason for our success in the one-day series in Australia. You have just got to bowl quick in that game,” he said.Having your typical 130kph out-swinger coming in and bowling didn’t really help at all, he added. The success against Australia last summer, both in the third Test at Perth, and in the one-day series, had been especially enjoyable.”They grew up flogging us and it was nice to see the same guys who had regarded us with derision being embarrassed for a change.”It was always great to play against an Australian side, but that tour, and especially that game in Perth, got to them. They weren’t particularly happy, you could see it in Steve Waugh’s body language,” he said. While victory didn’t come in the Test matches against Australia, Parore did get the chance to finish his career with a Test victory over England, at Eden Park, a match in which he had to plead with the selectors to be included. He promised them a good performance, after he had two ordinary Tests in the first two, and he did achieve that.Asked why a good performance wasn’t the goal all the time, he said, it came down to the opposition and what they allowed you to do.But as for now, it is back to the markets in his role as an investment advisor, safe in the knowledge that 10,000 copies of his book (sales of 3500 represent a best-seller in New Zealand) have been printed and demand has been exceptional.
