Leeds: Marsch drops Summerville claim

Jesse Marsch has dropped a promising claim on the future of Leeds United winger Crysencio Summerville.

What’s been said?

In recent comments cited by Leeds Live, the American manager claimed that – despite being heavily linked with a move away from Elland Road in the January transfer window, as well as recent reports linking the 20-year-old with an exit this summer – the Netherlands U21 international is a big part of his first-team plans.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-marsch-raphinha-dest-philhay” title=”Read the latest Leeds news!”]

Regarding the forward’s future, the 48-year-old said: “I’ve got to find ways to include Summerville, Cree, more, so all three of [Summerville, Joe Gelhardt and Sam Greenwood] are going to be big players here and are important for us moving forward.”

Supporters will be buzzing

Considering the hype surrounding Summerville’s future at the time of his £1.3m arrival at Elland Road back in 2020, the news that Marsch could finally be set to hand the winger an extended run in the first team is sure to have left Leeds supporters buzzing.

Indeed, when questioned about Summerville’s potential shortly after his switch to England, the youngster’s former coach at ADO Den Haag, Chris Powell, spoke incredibly highly of the forward, stating:

“You could see the raw talent he had. He’s only tiny, he’s like five foot nothing but he’s got wonderful balance. One vs one is his strength, against players. He’s quite a free spirit out on the wing, in a good way. He’ll excite you, he’s a bag of tricks.

“There’s some talent there, it’s just how it’s harnessed and what the coaches demand from him. He’s played for the U18s and U19s for Holland so he’s well thought of in Dutch football. His talent isn’t in doubt. He will have to learn how Leeds want him to play, in the U23s, and take it on board. It’s an exciting signing.”

However, despite his undoubted talent, Marcelo Bielsa afforded the £1.8m-rated talent just 118 minutes of Premier League football during his time in charge of the Whites – something which makes it easy to understand why Summerville had hoped to move on to pastures new in January.

Although, after Marsch’s latest comments regarding the £8.4k-per-week player who Ben Parker dubbed a “frightening” talent, it would now very much appear as if there is a future for the Dutchman at Leeds – something that, should the 20-year-old go on to take his opportunity in the first team, could save the club millions of pounds in transfer fees this summer.

Newcastle United in talks for Mitchel Bakker

Newcastle United are back in talks with Bayer Leverkusen over signing Mitchel Bakker in this January transfer window.

What’s the story?

While the Magpies continue to work on a deal to sign Lyon midfielder Bruno Guimaraes, it appears they still have their irons in several fires, with Bakker now well and truly back in the equation.

Writing on Twitter, journalist Ryan Taylor said: “Newcastle have revived talks with Bayer Leverkusen for Mitchel Bakker. Deal looked dead in water. Personal terms have already been discussed. #NUFC”

Fans will be buzzing

After clinching deals for Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood earlier this month, Newcastle’s recruitment team are ramping into overdrive heading into this final week of the January transfer window.

They seem to have pipped Arsenal in the race to sign Bruno, and have now come back to the table for Bakker.

The latter has had extensive experience of playing for some big clubs in Europe, with stints at Ajax, PSG and Leverkusen to his name.

Able to play at left-back, but also further forward or even in central defence as he has done in his career before, Bakker looks like the perfect versatile player who Newcastle could really do with in the second-half of this campaign.

With injuries and the virus wreaking havoc across the Premier League, having players like Bakker who can fill multiple positions when required gives managers a welcome option if and when things begin to get tough with their squad.

The £9m-rated star would be another fine signing for the Magpies, and have fans buzzing.

Meanwhile, Craig Hope has dropped an exciting Newcastle United transfer update on Bruno Guimaraes…

Shahid Afridi to retire from Tests

Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi has said he will retire from Test cricket following the second Test against Australia at Headingley starting next Wednesday

Cricinfo staff16-Jul-2010Shahid Afridi made the decision that seemed inevitable from the day he took over as Test captain, by announcing his Test retirement immediately after leading his side to a 150-run loss against Australia at Lord’s.Afridi has been a reluctant Test player over the years and this Test was his first in four years. A poor personal performance, capped by a four-ball 2 on the last day – out slogging to deep midwicket – didn’t help matters and the second Test against Australia at Headingley, starting on Wednesday, will now be his last. Afridi’s participation at Headingley, however, will depend on whether he passes a fitness test for a side strain in the days leading up to the match.Salman Butt, the vice-captain, is likely to take over the leadership for the England series though that is not set in stone until the PCB makes a final decision. Whoever does take over will be Pakistan’s fifth Test captain since the start of 2009.”With my temperament I can’t play Test cricket,” Afridi said. “It is better a youngster comes in my place, probably a genuine batsman or even a genuine bowler. I picked up a side injury during the Asia Cup and unless you are 100 percent fit you can’t perform in Test cricket.”I wasn’t interested in playing Test cricket but the board asked me to go and take a look as they didn’t have a choice. So I took up the responsibility. They asked me to take a chance and may be I would enjoy it. But I wasn’t really enjoying Test cricket but I tried. I wasn’t good enough. A captain should lead by example which I did not. And if I played the way I played in this match it is better to leave.”If Afridi’s side injury rules him out of the second Test at Headingley his final shot in the five-day game will be the slog-sweep that picked out Mike Hussey and Afridi was honest enough to admit he just couldn’t hold back. “You are right,” he said. “I am coming back to Test cricket after four years and in the interim I’d played a lot of ODI and Twenty20 cricket so I came in with the same [attacking] temperament. I was in two minds. You can say I was not strong mentally.”Yawar Saeed, Pakistan’s manager, confirmed Afridi’s decision to Cricinfo, though he insisted he wouldn’t call it a retirement. “Afridi had a side strain and felt that he shouldn’t keep a specialist out of the side. Temperamentally he feels not comfortable with the format so Leeds will be his last Test,” he said.Saeed said that Butt is likely to take over, but that any decision would have to be made in consultation with the board. Ijaz Butt, chairman PCB, is in England currently. “Salman Butt was appointed vice-captain for the tour and he will take over unless the PCB meets and decides otherwise. But as per procedure, he will take over,” Saeed said.”Salman is the vice captain and he should ideally be the man,” Afridi added. “The way he has shown the maturity he is good enough to carry forward the responsibility.”The development will bring into sharp focus the PCB’s decision to appoint Afridi as Test captain in the first place. He had already retired from the format once before, in 2006, only to return, ironically, for the tour to England that summer. He played a couple of Tests before pulling himself out of the format again.Since his appointment recently, his hesitancy towards the format has surfaced repeatedly. In an interview to before the series began, Afridi hinted he might not play Tests for long. “I’m confident I am fine fitness-wise,” he said then. “But I came back to Tests because I am doing it for the team only. If I think I am fit to do it, I will continue playing Tests. Otherwise I will not burden the side.”In a more recent interview to Cricinfo, Afridi said, “If down the line I become aware that I am not a good captain, or not a successful one, and the team is unable to make any use of me as a captain, I will not chase it. If I don’t have the ability then I will leave it on my own … I did not ask anyone forcibly to give me the captaincy, nor will I forcibly captain the team. If I am good I will prove it through my performance. If I am not good I will say khuda hafeez [God be with you].”

NUFC: Howe’s best XI

Newcastle were active throughout the January transfer window as PIF moved to bring a number of players to Tyneside.

Kieran Trippier, Bruno Guimaraes, Dan Burn and Chris Wood all joined on permanent deals, while Matt Targett was signed on loan from Premier League side Aston Villa.

The Magpies are currently 18th in the table and facing a fight against relegation to the second tier, with these fresh additions potentially helping them to move out of the bottom three.

How could Howe’s best XI look? Here is our take on it…

Dan Burn and Matt Targett could start in the back four for Howe, joining Trippier – who has already established himself at right-back.

The January signing from Brighton, Burn, has averaged a SofaScore rating of 6.96 in the Premier League, whilst Targett has managed a score of 6.82. No Newcastle player with five or more league outings this term has achieved a higher rating in either of their positions, suggesting that they will be able to immediately improve the team.

In midfield, Joelinton and Jonjo Shelvey could keep their places, with new signing Guimaraes added to the starting XI. The Brazilian midfielder joins off the back of an impressive campaign in Ligue 1, averaging a sublime SofaScore rating of 7.30, which is why he could slot straight into the team.

Howe said of him: “Bruno is a hugely exciting talent and has been one of our primary targets so I’m delighted to secure him. He strengthens the group immediately ready for the challenge ahead.”

His consistently brilliant displays could provide a lift in the middle of the park alongside Shelvey and Joelinton. This could provide protection to the back four, whilst giving the attack some support going the other way – with Bruno averaging 1.8 key passes per game.

At the top end of the pitch, there may not be a place for Wood in the starting XI if Howe decides to go with a 4-5-1 formation. When Callum Wilson returns from injury, he should be the player leading the line for the Magpies, having scored six goals in 14 – compared to the former Burnley man’s three in 19.

The New Zealand international could be used in a 4-4-2 set-up alongside Wilson, but in this best XI there is no room for him to play. Therefore, the January signing could end up on the bench as an impact substitute if Howe’s best XI comes to fruition.

Rangers players called Defoe ‘uncle’

Lots of Glasgow Rangers fans have been left reacting to a revelation that has emerged from Jermain Defoe.

Speaking on talkSPORT, the striker was looking back on his time at Ibrox, and in particular the relationship that he had with his teammates: “My teammates… oh, I get emotional.

“The boys were fantastic. They were brilliant from day one.

“Joe Aribo and Glen Kamara call me ‘uncle’! These are special people.”

The fact that both Aribo and Kamara referred to the 39-year-old as ‘uncle’ emphasises how much togetherness there is in the current squad, and surely every fan wants their club to feel like one big family.

The Englishman was indeed a great servant to the Teddy Bears, scoring 32 goals and making a further 10 assists in 76 matches in total over all competitions across the last four campaigns (Transfermarkt), helping them towards winning the Scottish Premiership title last season.

Nonetheless, it is nice for the Light Blues supporters to get snippets like this of what players were like when Defoe was there.

Classic catches, and a failed experiment

Cricinfo presents the Plays of the day from the match between Delhi Daredevils and Royal Challengers Bangalore

Jamie Alter at the Feroz Shah Kotla04-Apr-2010On the dime
Confidence is coursing through Anil Kumble’s veins at present. Today, after losing the toss on a flat track, he decided to open the bowling against two devastating batsmen. David Warner was away first ball with a tucked single to square, bringing Virender Sehwag – short of a few runs – on strike. Kumble began with a flipper on the pads which Sehwag failed to connect with. Sehwag missed the second ball while attempting a feisty drive. The third had some flight on it and he drove straight to a fielder. The fifth too was unable to pierce the strong off-side field and the sixth yielded just a single toward deep cover. That was a top over from a veteran slow bowler against two men who feast on spin.Six and out
No reference to the band that Brett Lee used to be part of. Abhimanyu Mithun’s career has progressed rapidly over the past season, with a superb debut Ranji Trophy season leading to an ODI cap. He hadn’t been a part of his home city’s IPL side until this evening, and the young quick made an immediate impact. Not with his first ball, however, which Sehwag carved over six, but with his second. Mithun pulled back the length and got the short ball to follow Sehwag, who for the umpteenth time in his career ended up chopping it onto his stumps. Mithun let out a roar that matched what the Kotla faithful had been bellowing during Sehwag’s all too brief cameo.Throwdown
Royal Challengers Bangalore’s second draft for this match also made his presence felt early in the piece, contributing to send back the other dangerous local Delhi batsman. Warner got cramped by a Jacques Kallis delivery and bunted it to toward cover, where KP Appanna – another hometown boy – ran in and took out the stumps with a direct hit to run-out Gautam Gambhir. One for the classic catches series
Dinesh Karthik’s eyes would have lit up when he saw a wide and short ball from Appanna. He wouldn’t have known, though, that when he smashed that one towards cover, Cameron White would fling himself to his left, get to the ball with both hands, and bring off a stunning catch very low to the ground.A experiment gone awry
Unfortunately for Bangalore, White was nowhere as sharp when he was given the ball right after that catch. There’s a reason why White hasn’t bowled himself much during Victoria’s domestic season. Ricky Ponting also hasn’t turned to him when he’s played limited-overs for Australia of late, and even White seemed a bit surprised that Kumble had picked him to deliver the 12th over. His third ball was so wide outside off that Steve Harmison would have laughed, and when White sent down some embarrassing half-trackers Paul Collingwood thumped two sixes and a four to round off a potentially game-changing 19-run over. That’s one experiment we won’t be seeing any more of.What a letdown
White got a chance to redeem himself when he was promoted to open with Kallis, but he barely managed to get into first gear. After facing eight deliveries for just four singles, and swiping and swishing plenty, White finally connected to one. Up over cover it went, and settled into the specialist long-off Warner’s hands.Slow coach
One can understand that Kallis, the leading run scorer this season, had been instructed to bat out the innings but what was Kevin Pietersen doing? He could not time the ball off the square and indulged in singles against some disciplined bowling from Delhi’s medium-pacer pair of Rajat Bhatia and Pradeep Sangwan. After scratching his way to 16 off 18 balls, Pietersen was put out of his misery on the 19th – a lovely yorker from Sangwan that crashed into the stumps.Men at work
Time was when a running catch on the edge of the cricket field used to get the adrenalin pumping. But in this time of Twenty20, it’s not just cool to take a catch on the run. You have to give it your damndest. What R Sathish, Angelo Mathews and Adam Voges did in the ICL and international Twenty20s over the past two seasons has become all the rage in the IPL. David Hussey and Doug Bollinger pulled off incredible leaping, relaying and parried catches this week and today Warner tried and just failed to become the third Aussie to add one to the collection. He leapt back to try and catch a big hit from Kallis, lost balance, lobbed the ball up, balanced himself and took the catch but immediately signaled that he was not sure whether his back foot had made contact with the rope. Replays showed that it indeed had, and Warner shrugged his shoulder. But it truly is a sign of the times when such efforts are being made with regularity.

Lingard ‘ready’ to ‘seal’ West Ham move

According to The Daily Mirror, there has been a major January development in West Ham United’s hunt for Manchester United playmaker Jesse Lingard.

The Lowdown: West Ham eye Lingard…

Manager David Moyes is said to want Lingard again this window after he tried and failed to bring him to the London Stadium last summer.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-updates/” title=”West Ham latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Indeed, reliable club insider ExWHUemployee backs that the Scotsman is still very much interested alongside other good sources – with reporter Jack Rosser of The Evening Standard also hearing that West Ham are in the running.

Lingard hasn’t managed to resurrect his career at Old Trafford since his brilliant loan spell with the Hammers last season, leading to the England international cancelling new contract talks as he eyes a move away.

Now, in a pretty big update, The Mirror and reporter Joe Krishnan have made quite the claim.

The Latest: Lingard ‘ready’ to seal West Ham move…

According to their information, Lingard is now ‘ready to leave Manchester United behind and seal a permanent move to West Ham’ before January 31.

The Red Devils are apparently ‘resigned’ to losing the 29-year-old with both Moyes and West Ham ‘determined to land’ the attacker this month.

It is also believed they are ‘hoping to strike a deal’ for a ‘cut-price fee’ as recruitment chief Rob Newman and manager Moyes appear to edge a step closer.

The Verdict: Exciting times…

All signs from this latest development point towards an inevitable exit from Manchester and Lingard’s stance that he is ‘ready’ to ‘seal’ a move to West Ham comes as exciting.

It appears the Irons are favourites to land the England international who bagged an incredible nine goals and four assists over 16 Premier League appearances on a temporary London spell at the end of 2020/2021.

These numbers point towards a player who is already proven under Moyes with former Three Lions goalkeeper and pundit Paul Robinson certainly believing he is the ideal target.

Robinson hailed Lingard as a possible ‘massive signing’ for the club if they can reach an agreement this month, going on to state his arrival would gift Moyes a ‘massive boost’ and his arrival could be ‘huge’ (Football Insider).

We’re in complete agreement, especially for a potential cut price.

ExWHUemployee drops Kurt Zouma update

West Ham United have been handed a huge injury boost concerning the return of Kurt Zouma.

What’s the latest?

That’s according to a claim made by ExWHUemployee, who revealed in a recent post on The West Ham Way that the centre-back, who picked up a hamstring tendon injury in the 3-2 win over Chelsea at the beginning of the month, is ahead of of schedule in his return to first-team action.

The insider also went on to reveal that the France international did not undergo surgery after sustaining his knock, with the club opting to take the “natural recovery route” for the 27-year-old defender.

In his post, Ex said: “Another who is ahead of schedule is Kurt Zouma. Although no return date is set, the club have opted to go down the ‘natural’ recovery route with him, meaning he’ll avoid surgery.”

Fans will be buzzing

Considering just how important a part of the West Ham side Zouma has become since his £29.8m move to the London Stadium this summer, the news that the centre-back is ahead of schedule in his return from injury is sure to have left Hammers fans buzzing.

Indeed, over his 11 Premier League appearances so far this season, the £28.8m-rated man has helped his side keep two clean sheets and has scored one goal, as well as making an average of 1.2 interceptions, 0.6 tackles, 5.2 clearances and winning 60% of his duels per game.

These returns have seen the £120k-per-week defender average a SofaScore match rating of 6.91, ranking him as David Moyes’ 12th-best performer in the top flight of English football.

As such, it is undoubtedly a case of the sooner Zouma returns the better for West Ham’s top-four hopes in the current campaign, meaning that the news the 27-year-old appears to be ahead of schedule in his return from injury is certainly a major boost for everyone involved with the club.
