West Ham transfers to determine Moyes’ fate

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, former Premier League midfielder Carlton Palmer believes transfer plans could be holding up David Moyes’ contract extension at West Ham.

Moyes’ current deal expires at the end of the season and he is yet to agree on fresh terms despite the excellent campaign the Hammers are having.

After fighting relegation last term, West Ham are now on course to secure European football this time round, showing just how great of a job the 57-year-old is doing.

Bearing that in mind, it may come as a surprise to some that he has not signed a new contract yet. Palmer, however, believes there is good reason, suggesting the former Manchester United and Everton manager could be waiting to hear how much money he has to spend in the summer.

“David Moyes has put himself in the driving seat with West Ham,” Palmer told FFC. “As long as they meet his demands, in terms of players he would like to bring in [he should sign a new deal].

“I know that they had a bit of a sticking point over the centre-back that they wanted to get out of Burnley [James Tarkowski]. But, you know, to be fair to Sean Dyche, why would he want to sell one of his best players? And if he’s going to sell him, like he said, he wants top dollar for him. So I don’t disagree with the West Ham owners standing their ground on the money that they were asking for him, but that could be a sticking point for David Moyes.”

It is understandable if Moyes is indeed waiting for clarity over funds as he potentially looks to establish West Ham as a side who regularly challenge for European football.

The Scotsman will also feel that he should be trusted when it comes to recruitment after bringing in the likes of Tomas Soucek and Jesse Lingard, who have both made massive impacts at the London Stadium this season.

Is this Leeds’ new Kemar Roofe?

Since Victor Orta joined Leeds United he has got the vast majority of his recruitment spot on.

Under Marcelo Bielsa, you need a very particular type of player, someone who’s willing to work hard and press from the front. They have to withstand his meticulous training ideas and his intense murder ball sessions.

Fail that, and you’ll be out the door quicker than you can say Thorp Arch. Jean-Kevin Augustin found that out the hard way.

Signed on loan from RB Leipzig in January 2020, he played just 48 minutes before departing Yorkshire with not even much of a farewell.

However, as Orta will tell you himself, there are plenty in this Leeds squad that appear to be tailor-made in a lab for Bielsa. One of them has been Patrick Bamford.

The striker has attracted his fair share of criticism during his time at Elland Road but this term he’s been a revelation, scoring 13 Premier League goals. To emphasise that achievement, Bamford had netted just once at this level before promotion last year.

One of the players who helped him get to such a promising level at Leeds was Kemar Roofe. The duo played in tandem during the 2018/19 campaign and brought the best out of each other.

Bamford was the player to make things stick up top, acting as a support act for other players. Roofe, meanwhile, was the striker who’d get in behind and stretch the defence.

Indeed, since he departed for Anderlecht in the summer of 2019, Leeds haven’t really had a player capable of doing the same. They tried to replace him with Eddie Nketiah but he never got a chance to prove himself, being recalled to Arsenal after half a season.

Leeds have been a breath of fresh air to the top-flight this term but you can’t help but think they need just a little more pizzazz in the final third. One man who could give them that is Ivan Toney.

The Brentford sensation was linked with a move to the Whites last week and if he arrives, he could replicate what Roofe gave so willingly to Bielsa’s side.

Speaking about the former Leeds man in February 2019, Eddie Gray typified the Rangers’ striker’s qualities expertly. This came after the forward suffered a cruel injury: “It’s a blow for a number of reasons (the injury), goalscoring obviously. He’s lead the line well, but he’s got that little bit of pace. It is something we [Leeds] have not got in abundance. Real pace. I’m talking about, like Norwich pace.”

Indeed, Leeds still lack a bit of speed. Raphinha has added to that but despite their free-flowing capabilities, few in the squad can blow a defender away.

Toney could do that, however. He has had a breathtaking season in the Championship, scoring a haul of 26 goals in 34 outings.

He has pace, and pivotally for Bielsa, can defend from the front. Peterborough owner Barry Fry said before he left for the Bees: “He’s turned into a tremendous all-round footballer. It’s important to remember Ivan is not just an exceptional goal-scoring forward, he’s also an outstanding defender.”

Indeed, those sentiments have also been delivered by Brentford boss Thomas Frank: “Ivan is a special, special player,” he began.

“He showed top positioning in the box, which is what we work with him on, but also he read cleverly (where to go) off the shoulder of the second central defender and showed perfect timing to get in front of him – and then a one-touch, perfect finish, just fantastic,” Frank added.

Playing off the shoulder and picking up little pockets of space is incredibly similar to Roofe. Put Toney’s clinical goal-scoring ability into the equation and you have a far more fearsome proposition.

Frank concluded: “But it is also his work ethic which is so important. Defending from the number nine backwards is key for me and there is so much more about him that he brings to the squad.”

With that in mind, the 24-year-old feels like the perfect man for Bielsa. If they can steal a march on other suitors for Toney’s signature, he would be a first-class signing.

AND in other news, Leeds have their perfect Pablo heir in rarely-seen 19 y/o, he’s a “great talent”…

West Brom: Big Sam must axe Grosicki v City

West Brom return to Premier League action this evening with a tricky encounter with Manchester City at the Hawthorns.

The Baggies are still languishing in the relegation zone, so this game may not be the free-hit it usually should be as they are desperate for points at the minute.

Indeed, Sam Allardyce’s men have it all to do as they sit some six points off Brighton, who occupy that 17th spot. However, Albion will face the two sides around them in the coming weeks.

It leaves the 66-year-old ‘firefighter’ with a crucial decision tonight as he needs to get his team selection spot on…

On the Chalkboard

And Allardyce can do exactly that by making a big call on the flanks.

Speaking ahead of the fixture, the Baggies boss revealed he would have the services of Matty Phillips again. The winger missed the last three outings after testing positive for the virus.

Allardyce said to reporters:

“That boosts our squad. It also gives us better opportunities to make substitutions and it gives us experience.”

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-west-brom-news-and-rumours-copy” title=”Read the latest West Brom news, transfer rumours and more!”]

It wouldn’t be a surprise to see him thrown straight back in as the Scotsman started the first four matches of the Big Sam era, evening captaining the side in Jake Livermore’s absence.

As a result, we could see Kamil Grosicki axed, which would be a wise decision based on his recent performances.

Only one other player that has started two or more league games this season has a worse WhoScored rating than the Polish veteran (6.19) and neither of his last two starts in the Premier League saw him graded above a 6.5, which is really poor.

The latest of which came during a defeat against West Ham where Grosicki failed to provide a single shot or dribble – two key abilities a wide man should possess. By comparison, Grady Diangana, who would start if fit, has averaged 1.5 dribbles and 0.8 shots per game, via WhoScored.

Even against League One outfit Blackpool, Grosicki looked under-par. He lost possession 20 times, which means he either struggled to combat the lower league opposition or was merely wasteful and won just two of seven duels, via SofaScore – that suggesting the former would be the case.

Despite being previously lauded as “unplayable” on his day, the £50k-per-week flop has proven in those three matches that he’s simply not good enough for the Premier League, so he must be axed from the starting XI tonight.

Phillips played a key role in the Baggies’ drawing with City last time. It makes sense for him to come back in for the struggling Grosicki this evening.

Leeds must cut their losses on Helder Costa

Leeds United were unable to make much use of the January transfer window and as such, they will see out the rest of the 2020/21 season without any new personnel. However, their summer business was fruitful enough to ensure that they look certain to survive in the Premier League upon their return to the big time.

Despite the injury problems that are hindering their backline, the Whites are benefitting from the likes of Raphinha and Jack Harrison week in, week out. Between them, the creative duo have contributed nine goals and eight assists so far this season, according to BBC Sport.

However, due to their untouchable status in Marcelo Bielsa’s lineup, Helder Costa has slipped drastically down the pecking order. Despite playing a huge role in Leeds’ promotion-winning campaign, the former Wolves man has been a bit-part player at best this time around.

As per Transfermarkt, the 27-year-old hasn’t started for the Whites since November. The Championship winners fell 4-1 to Crystal Palace and Costa was responsible for one of their goals after putting the ball into his own net. Since then, he has been reduced to mere cameo appearances for Leeds and has just one goal and two assists to his name for the season.

With the emergence of youngster Ian Poveda, the role of Raphinha’s deputy is now highly contested. The 20-year-old has already bagged himself ten senior appearances this season and is quickly becoming one of Bielsa’s go-to options from the bench.

Poveda is very likely to usurp Costa in the pecking order at Leeds and once that happens, the Portugal international could waste his years on the bench at Elland Road.

Costa has failed to impress onlookers as well this season. In a recent Q&A for The Athletic, Phil Hay admitted that the summer signing has “fallen well behind Raphinha” and was a “big disappointment” for Leeds against Crawley Town back in October.

Indeed, the Whites suffered a shock defeat to the League One side, who dumped them out of the FA Cup after firing three goals past them. According to Sofascore, Costa had two clear-cut chances to find the back of the net, but squandered both opportunities.

Although he has only recently signed permanently for Leeds, Andrea Radrizzani will not take kindly to forking out £70,000 per week for a player who rarely sees first team action these days. A transfer away from Elland Road may appear rash on paper, but as things stand, it looks to be the best move for all involved.

In other news, Leeds can’t afford to let Raphinha leave amid Liverpool interest…

Forget Morelos: Glasgow Rangers must give Glen Kamara a new contract

While Alfredo Morelos’ future at Ibrox remains up in the air, Glasgow Rangers sporting director Ross Wilson must do everything in his power to stop Glen Kamara from leaving the club when the transfer market opens in January.

The 27-cap Finland international’s current contract with the 54-time Scottish champions is set to expire in 2023, having signed a four-year pre-contract deal when he first arrived at Ibrox last year.

However, this hasn’t stopped Leeds United from retaining an interest in the defensive-minded midfielder, with top European clubs including Monaco, Lille and Borussia Dortmund also interested in signing him in the winter transfer window.

Ever since he first arrived at the Govan-based Glaswegian giants, Kamara has established himself as an integral part of Steven Gerrard’s side, having made 80 appearances for the Gers, providing three goals and three assists across all competitions, via Transfermarkt.

Morelos may be Gerrard’s trusted man for the big occasion, but he finds himself in a spot of bother after his latest charge for violent conduct, while the 25-year-old has become an important piece of the jigsaw puzzle to form the engine room in the midfield.

The Finnish midfielder has been in such fine form since the start of the season, as he has scored one goal in six games in the Europa League, while he is averaging 1.8 tackles, 1.5 interceptions and 1.2 dribbles per game, via WhoScored.

It’s no surprise, then, that Gerrard made an impassioned plea to the club chiefs after Rangers beat Lech Poznan to reach the Europa League knockout stages as Group D winners, saying:

“I thought Glen Kamara again showed why everybody is talking about him and there’s a lot of fuss about him.

“I thought he was outstanding from start to finish and my advice to the club is to move that situation along as quickly as they can.”

Former Celtic and St Mirren striker Frankie McAvennie believes the board will heed Gerrard’s warning and offer Kamara a contract extension.

He told Football Insider:

“If Steven Gerrard wants him to get him tied down to a new deal then why would you not? I think the board will listen to him.”

“Kamara cost just £50,000 as well. The recruitment at Rangers has been great in recent years and he is an example of that.”

Kamara has become such an important part of the squad in recent months, and even if he does depart in a couple of weeks, he will always be fondly remembered for scoring against his former club Dundee at the start of the year.

But it’s fair to say that they would be foolish to let him go, which is precisely why Ross Wilson must wrap up a deal for the midfield dynamo, who earns around £6,200-per-week.

While Gerrard can call upon the services of Scott Arfield, Joe Aribo, Steven Davis, Ryan Jack and Bongani Zungu to form his midfield three, it would be a huge blunder by the board if they were to let him leave halfway through the season, especially with so much still at stake in the Premiership.

AND in other news, Ross Wilson must sanction Rangers swoop for Marijan Cabraja as a Barisic alternative…

Marcelo Bielsa has a massive Leeds selection headache on his hands

For the first time since joining Leeds United, Marcelo Bielsa has something of a bloated squad.

The Argentine has always been adamant that he likes working with a smaller group of players, but after spending almost £100m in the transfer window, Leeds have a lot of depth in their key positions.

Having depth is always a good thing at a club, but a spending spree of those proportions is bound to bring with it some selection headaches, and it looks as though there’s a brewing dilemma at Leeds that could soon be keeping Bielsa up at night.

Leeds are now absolutely stacked at right-wing after the addition of Raphinha and the emergence of Ian Poveda.

Add into that the fact that Helder Costa has been United’s first choice for the past year or so, and you can see the problem that Bielsa faces.

Costa has been brilliant lately as well, netting two goals and contributing an assist in his first four appearances this season, but it’ll be hard to justify spending £17m on Raphinha if he’s just going to sit on the bench.

Poveda also has a case to make. He earnt a lot of praise for his showing against Manchester City, and even if he’s not a starter he will want a spot on the bench. However, with three players vying for one spot, it’s hard to imagine that two substitute spots will be taken up by one position.

Of course, there is the argument that Raphinha can also play on the left, but that just complicates things further adding Jack Harrison and Ezgjan Alioski into the problem creating an even bigger selection headache.

We can’t come up with the answer to this conundrum, and luckily we don’t have to, it’s up to Bielsa to keep up this juggling act between three very talented players fighting for one spot.

We certainly don’t envy the Argentine.

West Ham’s Felipe Anderson offers forlorn loan debut for FC Porto vs Sporting CP

David Moyes’ decision to sanction a one-season loan deal for Felipe Anderson to join FC Porto appeared to be proven right at the weekend as the West Ham United forward made his debut for the Liga NOS giants.

West Ham had attempted to sell the Brazilian over the course of the summer market but failed to find a potential suitor willing to purchase the £22.5m-rated winger, and ultimately had to settle for a temporary deal without an option to buy at the end of the season.

Anderson was not Porto’s favoured option having strived to sign Gremio attacker Pepe but were not able to find an amicable agreement, and settled for the Irons outcast at the expense of a sizable loan fee and his £100,000-per-week contract.

Anderson had struggled to enter Moyes’ plans before the closure of the international transfer market, with the Scottish coach only awarding the 27-year-old two late cameo’s totalling two minutes in four Premier League games.

Porto boss Sergio Conceicao was also opposed to starting the attacker in his side’s first match post the October international break, only opting to select Anderson among his substitutes away to Liga NOS rivals Sporting CP on Saturday.

Nuno Santos opened the scoring for the hosts at the Jose Alvalade XXI with his second goal of the campaign, before first-half efforts from Mateus Uribe and Jesus Corona flipped the scoreline approaching the break.

Anderson entered the action as the first of Porto’s five permitted substitutes in the 59th-minute replacing Luis Diaz, but was unable to stretch the visitor’s lead with a forlorn cameo before Luciano Vietto snatched a late equaliser with one minute of regular time to play.

The result left Porto level on points with Sporting although having played a game more, and behind title-rivals SL Benfica.

Anderson’s 31-minute cameo at the Jose Alvalade XXI will have failed to leave a glowing impression on Porto boss Conceicao, and helped further justify West Ham’s decision to try and part ways just two years on from his then-club record £36million arrival.

The winger managed to record just 17 touches of the ball against Sporting, with which he completed just six passes, attempted no crosses, registered no shots on goal, completed just one of three dribbles, lost five of his nine duels and turned over possession four times, per SofaScore.

Anderson did come close to helping Porto stretch their advantage over Sporting with one key pass, but his offensive efforts were matched by his defensive labours with two tackles and one interception whilst being dribbled past twice on route to a 6.5/10 match rating.

He will certainly need to take his game to another level during his time in Portugal if Anderson has any hopes of impressing Moyes and earning a second shot at the London Stadium upon his return.

AND in other news, a £27m-rated West Ham man must utilise the east London outfit’s transfer failings to his advantage.
