Pakistan disintegrating due to lack of discipline

Article: Taha Noor, comment on Pak cricket, PCB

Taha Noor15-Sep-2002Pakistani cricket fans were left tearing their hair out in frustration after the first two matches in Kenya. Yet again, a team that promises much, fails to deliver, crumbling under the pressure exerted by the thoroughly professional Australians was the universal lament here. It was thought that Pakistan would put up a good show, having recently beaten the Aussies in the Super Challenge II competition. To say that the performance in the first two matches at Kenya was far below par, would probably be an understatement.Even though the Pakistanis may have emerged victors against the Kenyans, their standard of play was certainly not worth praise. The bowlers sprayed the ball all over with a massive number of wides and no-balls, and the batsmen limped to victory inspite being asked to chase modest totals against a very weak opposition. While the Kenyans were not good enough to take advantage, the Australians cashed in. What this points towards is an obvious lack of discipline and a major lack of planning.Firstly, the main problem plaguing the team in this triangular tournament was the absence of their top batsmen. Youhana was sent home after a squabble with the tour management and Inzamam’s injury compounded the problems for an already fragile batting order.Even more mystifying was that Misbah-ul-Haq not getting a chance even when the big guns were absent. Misbah has been touring along with the team for over 6 months but has played only one game. The lack of confidence in his abilities is obvious as the management preferred to play Shoaib Malik as a batsman. Misbah has been included in the squad as a specialist batsman, and if he cannot justify that position, then other alternatives must be sought. It is essential that any squad of 15 should contain those players who can be slotted into the playing eleven whenever needed, not just mere tourists. The selectors would do well to reconsider the likes of Taufeeq Umar and Imran Farhat who performed well in the domestic competitions. The next problem that must be addressed is the indiscipline of our bowling attack. Waqar and Wasim are highly experienced campaigners, and for them to be bowling such a large number of wides and no-balls is inexcusable. They were wayward in both line and length and the Australians punished them thoroughly. Shoaib Akhtar looked totally out of sorts after his return to the team, and seemed to be all over the place with his bowling. In the Super Challenge II he had bowled with great aggression and control, which was no where to be seen in Kenya. There is some way to go in this tournament, and the Pakistani attack must try and get their act together, especially cut down on the extras. The over rate is another problem for Pakistan, with the fielders and bowlers showing no interest in rushing things during the change of overs. The team has been very lucky in not being penalised for their atrocious over rate.Lastly, the Pakistanis in general need to work out a plan against the Aussies, who have come back brilliantly after their loss in the Super Challenge II. They are a very difficult side to beat, when they are on top, and a lot of hard work has to be put in if the Pakistanis are to ruffle their feathers. They need to work out what to do after winning the toss, as chasing is certainly not one of Pakistan’s strengths, even if that means exposing the batsmen to the overcast conditions at the start of play. The batting order needs to be thought about in detail, as asking Razzak to open was not a very clever idea. Afridi should be utilized a little lower down the order in such conditions, once the ball has lost its shine, so that he can be more effective. Plus the Pakistani side is playing with too many all rounders and hardly any specialist batsmen. Misbah must be given a chance to prove himself, and if he fails to do so, then its fair to axe him.

Leeds United close to new contract for Bamford

The Athletic journalist Adam Crafton has dropped an update involving Leeds United and Patrick Bamford.

What’s the story?

David Ornstein had previously revealed that last summer, the 27-year-old signed a new one-year extension to his existing contract at Elland Road, with his deal now running until June 2023.

And now, Crafton has claimed via his official Twitter account that Marcelo Bielsa’s side are “closing on” an extension for Bamford, adding that discussions are progressing well over a renewal.

Leeds fans will be delighted

The striker was an absolute sensation in the Premier League last season for the Whites, banging in 17 goals and providing another eight assists in 38 games.

In fact, only Spurs talisman Harry Kane outscored the Leeds man in the top-flight in terms of the players Gareth Southgate chose for the England squad, while only the Three Lions captain, Marcus Rashford and Jack Grealish provided more assists than him.

Speaking to the Yorkshire Evening Post, former Leeds midfielder David Prutton had urged Southgate to take Bamford to the EUROs, declaring: “Get him in there. He’s got no tournament baggage and he’s a great team player who is a hard worker and selfless. He’s performed under pressure at a big club and always rises to the challenge of the questions against him. He’s an all round good egg.”

The fact Bamford was in the conversation for an England spot for this summer is a real testament of just how much he has improved under Bielsa at Elland Road.

Keeping a hold of the core that Bielsa has built over the seasons at Elland Road is crucial to keeping the kind of team spirit that the Leeds boss has helped create, and Bamford has been one of the main reasons why the Whites find themselves in the Premier League again.

Given how Leeds fans were absolutely ecstatic when news emerged from Ornstein that a one-year extension was signed, the update from Crafton that talks are going well over a renewal is surely to delight fans even more.

Meanwhile, Beren Cross has dropped a Leeds United transfer update…

Wolves journalist backs Traore and Podence to thrive under Lage

Adama Traore and Daniel Podence are two Wolves players who could really benefit from Bruno Lage’s arrival, says Express & Star journalist Luke Hatfield.

Following Nuno Espirito Santo’s departure at the end of last season, Lage was appointed as the new Wolves manager.

The ex-Benfica boss prefers a 4-4-2 formation, which is in contrast to Nuno, who favours a 3-4-3.

It means Wolves could be using more traditional wingers this upcoming season as opposed to wing-backs, and Hatfield thinks that could really suit the likes of £18m man Traore, and £17m star Podence.

“If you’re playing out-and-out wingers, I think it may suit them a bit better,” the Wolves journalist told TT.

“Traore was a player who was kind of tried out in a couple different positions at pretty much every club he’s been at. They played him at wing-back a couple times and you’re asking him to do a lot of defensive work.

“Podence probably struggled at the back end of last season. I think a lot of fans were getting a little bit frustrated with him. In a 4-4-2, which Lage has been known to play, it could be interesting to see how they do.”

Indeed, in a 4-4-2 with less defensive responsibilities, the likes of Traore and Podence really could thrive.

The former, in particular, is such a gifted individual, able to beat defenders like it is nothing. In the Premier League last term, he averaged 4.1 dribbles per game, more than any other player (via WhoScored).

As an out-and-out winger, hugging the touchline, he should be able to express that sort of talent on a more consistent basis.

Agbonlahor warns Villa against Winks

Gabriel Agbonlahor thinks that one Aston Villa target would not be guaranteed a place in Dean Smith’s starting line-up if he moved to Villa Park this summer…

What’s the talk?

Agbonlahor has said that he would not pick reported target Harry Winks over any of the club’s current midfield options. Villa are reportedly keen on a deal for Winks, who is valued at £30m by Tottenham, and Agbonlahor believes John McGinn, Douglas Luiz and Marvelous Nakamba would be ahead of him.

He told Football Insider:

“I think Winks is a good player.

“But we can’t underestimate the talent we’ve got in midfield already.

“Winks would be a great signing but I wouldn’t pick Winks before John McGinn, Douglas Luiz or Marvelous Nakamba.

“Just because he’s a good player it doesn’t mean he’s guaranteed to get into the team.”

Fans would be fuming

Villa fans would be fuming if the club decided to spend £30m on a player who would be the fourth choice in his position. Agbonlahor believes that he would be the fourth-best central midfielder at Smith’s disposal and, if that is the case, NSWE would be heading for a disaster by bringing him to Villa Park.

Winks averaged a WhoScored rating of 6.37 in the Premier League for Spurs last term. McGinn, Nakamba and Luiz all managed better scores for Villa, with all three players hitting 6.52 or higher. This suggests that Agbonlahor’s assessment of where he would fit within the squad is accurate and that Winks would not arrive as a guaranteed starter as he has not shown that he is a sizeable upgrade on the existing options in that area of the pitch.

Former Tottenham defender Graham Roberts offered a scathing verdict on Winks last month, calling him “Mr Conserative” and claiming that he is now an average player.

Roberts told Football FanCast:

“He’s gone Mr Conservative, he plays simple, and if I don’t give the ball away, I’m a great player.

“You’re not, he’s become an average player, and that’s being fair.”

Winks has a career average of 0.5 key passes per game, whilst completing 90% of his passes – including 2.3 long passes per game. This aligns with Roberts comments about him being ‘Mr Conservative’, as he is completing a high percentage of his passes without taking many chances or attempting a significant amount of longer balls to open up defences.

Therefore, NSWE must avoiding making a grave error and should retract their interest in Winks. Instead, they should look to sign a player who is able to take up a starting spot and improve Smith’s team, as the supporters would be left livid if £30m was wasted on a reserve option.

Southampton fans react to Armstrong news

Many Southampton fans have been reacting to the news that Adam Armstrong is set to complete a move to St Mary’s.

Last season, the Saints went through a mixed campaign as they finished 15th in the Premier League table but also reached an FA Cup semi-final. As such, there is likely to be plenty of business conducted by Ralph Hasenhuttl and co during this current transfer window – they have already confirmed the capture of Romain Perraud from French club Brest (southamptonfc.com).

With Danny Ings continuing to be linked with an exit (via Daily Express), the Saints may need a new striker. According to The Sunday Mirror (via Hampshire Live), that man could be 24-year-old Armstrong – the Blackburn Rovers marksman is set to move to the south coast, with the deal likely to cost the Saints £10m plus add-ons.

He enjoyed a superb 2020/21 campaign, netting 28 times in 40 Championship appearances (Transfermarkt). That was more than double the tally of Southampton’s top scorer from the season (Ings with 13).

The news was shared on Twitter by @SaintsExtra, and it attracted plenty of attention from the club’s supporters. These fans took to the social media platform to share their thoughts.

Spurs risk unmitigated disaster with Sarri

As Tottenham Hotspur’s managerial situation rumbles on, another name has emerged in the running…

What’s the word?

According to Italian news outlet Il Messaggero, Lazio are becoming increasingly concerned that former Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri is holding out for the vacant Spurs job.

It’s thought that the 62-year-old is close to replacing Simone Inzaghi at the Stadio Olimpico but there are worries that he is stalling in case Daniel Levy approaches him with an offer to return to the Premier League.

Spurs have now gone seven weeks without a manager and at the end of last week, the North Londoners suffered yet another blow with Antonio Conte seemingly ruled out of the running, as per the Telegraph.

An unmitigated disaster

Whilst Sarri could be considered a high-calibre candidate, having won a Serie A title and a Europa League, he is far from what the Lilywhites chairman is apparently looking for.

Levy is said to be after an attack-minded head coach that is committed to developing the club’s promising youngsters, something that led to serious concerns on Spurs’ part over Conte’s credentials.

Many in N17 will remember Sarri from his time at Chelsea. He may have delivered success on the European stage but he failed to win over fans and certainly struggled to progress several of their key prospects.

The supporters frequently turned against their manager, with chants of “we want Sarri out” and “you don’t know what you’re doing” being heard during a victory over Cardiff City.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-spurs-news-manager-gossip-transfer-rumours-team-and-injury-updates-and-much-more” title= “Read the latest Spurs news, manager gossip, transfer rumours, team and injury updates and more!”]

He was hardly a popular figure in the dressing room, either. It reached such a boiling point that third-choice goalkeeper Rob Green had to confront him in front of the entire squad, as he revealed to The Athletic.

“I just spelled it out. I told him, ‘You have no plan B. You’re a transactional kind of manager. The players in the group are not the kind to speak to you like this — they care very much but are scared to say something to you like I am. I don’t care because what are you going to do — drop me!?’”

Similarly, there was a saga over Callum Hudson-Odoi, who had impressed in pre-season and in the Europa League under the Italian aged just 18, yet he wasn’t given much of a chance in the top-flight.

That would certainly go against Levy’s desire to develop players like Oliver Skipp and Ryan Sessegnon who are both set to return from their respective loan spells this summer.

Furthermore, following Jose Mourinho’s sacking, there were claims suggesting that the Portuguese had “sucked the culture out of the club” and that isn’t something that’ll be fixed by Sarri as he’s so set in his ways.

Ex-Blues defender Mario Melchiot once dubbed him “very stubborn” to talkSPORT after an FA Cup defeat to Manchester United, whilst AS (via Football Italia) sensationally reported that the 62-year-old had lost the dressing room and his relationship with many big stars was ‘irreconcilable.’

This was also something Noel Whelan alluded to when speaking about links to the Italian. He claimed to Football Insider:

“No, I don’t think that’s the right appointment. I really don’t. No. That’s not the way Tottenham need to go. He’s another personality who would clash with the players. You need to look at the man-management side of things now.”

Again, that’s another reason behind Mourinho’s departure.

All in all, a move for Sarri would surely be an unmitigated disaster for Spurs. There’s nothing to suggest that he’s the right man for the club, especially if they had doubts over the trophy-laden Conte, who arguably was the best candidate out there.

Levy must avoid the Chelsea flop at all costs – maybe he should try and find someone that’s not taken the helm at Stamford Bridge this time?

Newsome wants Sheffield Wednesday to sign Pigott - Exclusive

Sheffield Wednesday are still very much in financial turmoil and with Darren Moore still unsure over what his budget will look like for this summer’s transfer window, he could do a lot worse than to bring in now free agent Joe Pigott, according to former Sheffield Wednesday defender, Jon Newsome.

The Owls will know that they are likely going to have to box smart this summer if they want to bring in some quality additions to their now League One squad and someone they have been linked with is Pigott, who led the line for AFC Wimbledon last season.

He certainly knows where the net is having netted 20 goals – and 22 in all competitions – during his final season spent with Wimbledon which saw them stay clear of the relegation zone, so he would certainly be able to complement someone like Josh Windass who could stay with the club for their season in England’s third tier.

League One is now littered with former big clubs of English football such as Portsmouth, Ipswich Town and Sunderland, so to get out of the league Moore will have to recruit players who know the league and how to do a job, something Pigott would certainly add. That’s according to Newsome, who spoke exclusively to Transfer Tavern:

“If we are able to afford him, then I think he is somebody who would undoubtedly add something to the club if he’s scored goals at that level before.

“He knows what that level is like and he would be one of many that we need to get through the door.”

Sheffield Wednesday don’t have time to be licking their wounds from relegation into League One as it is certainly an unforgiven league that is difficult o get out of, but even more so, very challenging to then remain out of it.

This is because clubs build their squads to get out of League One, however, the jump into the Championship is massive so Moore must try and strike that balance of players suited to League One but also capable of making the step up.

Trinidad & Tobago retain Under-15 title

Trinidad & Tobago re-asserted their supremacy at the junior levels by lifting the West Indies Under-15 title for the third time in succession, beating Barbados by 31 runs in the penultimate round of the tournament on Wednesday

Staff Reporter04-Apr-2002Trinidad & Tobago re-asserted their supremacy at the junior levels by lifting the West Indies Under-15 title for the third time in succession, beating Barbados by 31 runs in the penultimate round of the tournament on Wednesday. They are scheduled to play another match against Leeward Islands in their final round, but Trinidad & Tobago ensured that game would only be of academic interest. By bowling Barbados out for only 140, the hosts successfully defended their total of 171 and remained unbeaten after four rounds of matches. The home team did not display any scintillating batting, but there were enough minor contributions to take the team to a defendable score. For Barbados, Simone Steele’s 4-17 were the best figures of the match. When the visitors batted, Orman Phillips made 33, but the rest of the batting crumbled against some fine spin bowling. Left-arm spinner Kavesh Kantasingh picked 5-18, and off-spinner Ansil Bhagan took 4-15, the two destroying the Barbados batting line-up in the process.
