Bayliss confident despite poor day

Sri Lanka coach Trevor Bayliss believes Sri Lanka can bounce back from a poor day’s Test cricket and compete in the next three days

Sa'adi Thawfeeq13-Jul-2009″We are back to square one.” That was Sri Lanka coach Trevor Bayliss’ curt analysis of where the home side were after the second day’s play at the P Sara.Having rolled Pakistan over for 90 and then closed day one on 163 for 3, Sri Lanka were dismissed for 240 – a lead of 150 – and then were put on the defensive by maiden centurion Fawad Alam. Spearheaded by a four-wicket haul by Umar Gul, Pakistan came back into the Test strongly and went to stumps with a lead of 28 with nine second innings wickets in hand.”Pakistan played well today and the game is evenly poised again. We played two days of cricket and we are probably back to square one,” said Bayliss. “We had a good first day and they had a good second day. The one experienced bowler in both teams put his hand up today and bowled well for them and got them back into the game.”When Sri Lanka resumed on 164 for 3 their plans were to bat as long as possible, but that was thwarted by Gul and offspinner Saeed Ajmal, who shared eight wickets between them.”Our plan was to bat for two or three days if we could,” said Bayliss. “As it turned out Sanga scored runs and we made a few starts. We needed one more batter to go on and get a good score and be 250-plus in front that would have been nice. 150 in front we’ll take that. The game’s evenly poised after two days and with three days to go whoever plays the best cricket in the last three days will win.”Bayliss was confident Sri Lanka would come back. “They’ve realised they had better days in cricket. Tomorrow’s another day to wake up still breathing and go and play a game of cricket,” he said. “These guys are professional cricketers, that’s why they are good and are able to turn performances around from day to day. They’ve had bad days before and come out and had good days the next day. That’s just what happens in the game of cricket. Pakistan showed that they were able to turn it around. We showed that we can turn it around in the first Test in Galle. It’s just one of those things that happen in cricket.”Bayliss believed the pitch had flattened out and that it was not going to be easy for any bowler from here onwards. “The history of this wicket is that in the last six games we played here tells you the wicket gets pretty good and doesn’t deteriorate as much as you might think,” he said. “It looks to be playing pretty well at the moment and hope it would continue to do so for the next couple of days.”

Taufel gives backing to pink ball

The Australian Test umpire, Simon Taufel, believes the pink ball being trialled by MCC could have a future in the game after watching it in action during a match at Lord’s on Wednesday

The pink ball has received the thumbs-up from one of the world’s leading umpires•Matt Bright

The Australian Test umpire, Simon Taufel, believes the pink ball being trialled by MCC could have a future in the game after watching it in action during a match at Lord’s on Wednesday.Taufel stood for ten overs of the contest between MCC and MCC Young Cricketers before flying back to Johannesburg where he will be umpiring in the final stages of the IPL.”It looked pretty good.” Taufel told the lords.org website. “There was a little bit of a comet trail to it but it certainly gave me a lot more information off the pitch and off the seam. My view was you could probably see it better than a white ball.”Now we have to look at the duration of that ball. Will it last the 80, 90, 100 overs?” he asked. “What’s it going to change [for] a swing bowler; or someone who uses shine as a method of competing in the game? Spinners – how do they feel about it? Can they grip the ball because it’s not a dye, it’s still a lacquer. Does that change the way we’d play Test cricket? That’s something I’m conscious of.”Under the current regulations for one-day internationals, there is a mandatory ball-change after 34 overs, mainly due to the discoloration it suffers in the course of an innings. “With this [pink] ball we don’t see that problem,” said Taufel. “I’ve seen a ball that’s 40 overs, 50 overs old – you don’t get the same sort of discoloration. From that perspective, it’s certainly a better colour.”As for the prospect of one day umpiring in a day/night Test match, Taufel was open to the possibility. “I think what we have to do is respond to the changing markets that we’re seeing,” he said. “In some parts of the world we’re seeing Test cricket as very alive and flourishing – we’re seeing high spectator attendance and high TV ratings.”But in some parts of the world, with some participants that’s not the case. We have to make sure we respond to that feedback. If there are ways we can encourage more people to watch, enjoy and appreciate Test cricket, and that means changing the timing of it, to suit what the market wants – then I think we need to look at that.”

Liverpool: Jota and Jones are injury doubts

Ahead of their 2-2 draw against Manchester City in their previous Premier League clash before into the current international break, Liverpool were without Thiago Alcantara and Trent Alexander-Arnold through injury.

It now seems as though the Reds could be without two more of their senior stars through injury with the Premier League clash against Watford on the horizon next weekend.

What’s the latest?

One potential injury issue with which the Reds may have to deal once their international stars return is with Portuguese attacker Diogo Jota.

It has been reported in Portugal (via Liverpool Echo) that the 24-year-old has not trained with the rest of his international teammates due to some muscle issues.

Additionally, it was revealed by England under-21 coach Lee Carsley that Curtis Jones had a tight groin in training on Tuesday and will now be assessed for their match against Andorra on Monday.

While this is by no means confirmation that either of them will be unavailable to play against Watford next weekend, it’s still a concern for everyone at Liverpool – especially manager Jurgen Klopp, who will undoubtedly be displeased if two of his players come back unfit, especially given how injuries disrupted so much of their previous campaign.

Headache for Klopp

In terms of who could replace the duo for the match against Watford should the worst-case scenario happen and both are ruled out, Liverpool could potentially turn to Roberto Firmino to take Jota’s place in the team after the Brazilian replaced him in the second half against Pep Guardiola’s side.

If Jones isn’t able to play against the Hornets and Thiago still isn’t fully fit, Klopp must hope that Naby Keita is fit enough to feature after picking up an knock in their Carabao Cup clash against Norwich City last month.

Looking ahead to the return of Premier League action and Liverpool’s match against Watford on Saturday, which will be Claudio Ranieri’s first match in charge of the Hornets, Klopp will hope that Jota and Jones will be able to get their fitness back over the next week so that they can be available for selection at Vicarage Road.

Strauss century sparks England win

England XI 424 for 8 and 271 for 5 (Strauss 103, Cook 50) beat St Kitts Invitational XI 251 (Panesar 4-53) and 221 (Rogers 79) by 217 runs

Andrew Strauss bounced back from his first-innings duck to post England’s third century of the match, then followed up with his first victory as full-time captain, as England crushed a St Kitts Invitational XI by 217 runs at Basseterre. After resuming on 118 for 0 overnight, England declared on 271 for 5, leaving St Kitts an improbable 445 for victory. They were eventually bowled out for 221 inside two sessions, with Monty Panesar adding three more wickets to take his match tally to seven.Strauss, who had been dismissed by the second ball of the match on Sunday, retired immediately after reaching his landmark from 116 balls, just as his opening partner, Alastair Cook, had done after his half-century in the final session of the second day. The first bona fide wicket of England’s innings was that of Matt Prior, who collided with his partner, Ian Bell, in mid-pitch and was run out for 3.Bell, whose place is under severe scrutiny in this game, once again left room for debate about his future with a pretty 49 that, like his first-innings 36, contained several classy moments but ended in a weak fashion when he scuffed a drive to mid-on against the offspinner, Trevier Smithen. Stuart Broad, who confirmed today he will not be taking part in this year’s IPL, hit five fours and a six in a 35-ball 36, leaving just enough time for Adil Rashid and James Anderson to face 12 deliveries each.On a day when England’s injury worries were alleviated, both by the positive news of Andrew Flintoff’s side injury and the appearance of Owais Shah as a substitute fielder following his eye problem, England were able to leave the field feeling satisfied with their overall showing across the three days. Victory came with 20 minutes of the match to spare, as the spin pairing of Adil Rashid and Panesar whittled through the tail from a comfortable tea-time position of 100 for 3.England shared the wickets around with all six of their bowlers claiming a scalp. Steve Harmison removed the teenaged opener, Kejel Tyson, for the second time in the match, before Broad chipped in with two wickets before tea, Steve Liburd and the captain, Shane Jeffers, for 41. Once again only Codville Rogers, who resisted in the first innings with 63, was able to come to terms with the variety of England’s attack. He top-scored for the second time with 79.

Wolves may have their own Sanches already

This was a difficult summer for Wolverhampton Wanderers. They lost Nuno Santo early on due to a rift over recruitment and it’s probably just as well he left.

The Portuguese had been informed by Jeff Shi and co that he’d have to operate in a market that revolved around loan deals.

Bruno Lage, however, was keen to come to the Premier League and has worked duly with what he’s been given at Molineux.

Trincao arrived from Barcelona and South Korean speedster Hwang-hee Chan was also signed on a temporary basis from RB Leipzig.

Both players are eye-catching additions but beyond that, there was little to shout about in the market.

Wolves looked to complete deals on deadline day but ultimately fell short in their pursuits of Kieffer Moore, Sven Botman and Renato Sanches.

The Old Gold came into the final day of the window looking as though they’d sign the latter. They were in talks with Lille over landing the midfielder on a loan deal before paying to sign him next summer.

However, with the 23-year-old injured and a disagreement over the future fee, a deal fell through.

It was a gut-wrenching blow for the club who were keen to bring in one of the most promising central players in Europe.

Sanches’ previous spell in the Premier League with Swansea had been unsuccessful but he’s come on leaps and bounds since moving to French football.

He was involved in four goals throughout the league campaign and was tantalising with the ball at his feet.

The Portuguese dynamo recorded a pass success rate north of 85% and registered 1.7 dribbles per game.

Yet, they shouldn’t be too disheartened about missing out on Sanches. After all, Lage may already have Wolves’ very own Renato lying within their ranks.

That happens to be Chem Campbell, the new darling of the Wolves academy.

Of course, he’s not at the level that Sanches currently is but his future at Molineux and in the game, in general, is huge.

The 18-year-old was courted by Borussia Dortmund last year and was named in The Guardian’s 20-best players at Premier League clubs for 2019.

Writing in that piece, Paul Doyle said: “He is a skilful, direct dribbler with a knack for bursting forward from central midfield.”

That reminds us of Sanches, a skilful ball carrier who is capable of dragging his team up the pitch.

Campbell became the second-youngest player to feature for Wolves at senior level when he played in the Carabao Cup back in 2019/20.

He’s not played a first-team game since but has taken part in the EFL Trophy, gaining regular football against senior professionals.

The teenager is one of the most vibrant players in the academy and a glowing review from former U18 boss Steve Davis says a lot: “[He can] go as far as he wants in the game,” Davis began.

“He can produce things out of nothing.

“Defensively he’s got work to do in terms of his responsibilities but with the ball he can create things just with his skill. He catches the eye.”

Campbell has a long way to go before he becomes a regular part of the furniture at Molineux but the midfielder has plenty of potential.

After missing out on Sanches, Lage should look to unearth it.

Kent shines as Dolphins gain first win

A round-up of the latest matches in South Africa’s domestic one-day competition

Cricinfo staff15-Dec-2008Jon Kent’s excellent allround performance sent Cape Cobras tumbling, handing Dolphins their first win of the Championship in Cape Town. Kent cracked an unbeaten 64 from 58 balls after Imraan Khan glided 91 from 109, as Dolphins set the Cobras a testing 233 to win. However, they stumbled to 72 for 5 and Kent was in the action again, picking up 3 for 30 to dismiss Cape Cobras for a paltry 179 as Dolphins wrapped up a 53-run win with time to spare.A superb 115 from Gulam Bodi from just 111 balls anchored Titans’ thrilling run-chase in Centurion to beat Lions by four wickets off the last ball of the match. Chasing 257 Titans lost Bodi in the 39th over, and two more wickets fell in quick succession as Lions tightened the noose. With five needed off the final over, Werner Coetsee trapped Heino Kuhn leg-before with the first ball but Pierre Joubert edged them over the line with a quick single off the last delivery. Joubert’s heroics followed his fine spell earlier in the day when he picked up 3 for 44, restricting Lions after a useful 100-run stand between Dane Vilas and Vaughn van Jaarsveld.Warriors’ bowlers held their nerve to record a tight four-run win over Eagles in a rain-affected match in Kimberley. Jon-Jon Smuts stroked a well-crafted 104 in Warriors’ 227 for 3, moving to his maiden one-day hundred with a classical straight drive down the ground. Morne van Wyk (88) and Rilee Rossouw (48 from 69) appeared to be putting Eagles on course, chasing a Duckworth-Lewis revised 234 from 43 overs before Rossouw lost his wicket attempting a reverse sweep. With 13 runs needed from Lyall Meyer’s final over, CJ de Villiers took Eagles close with an edged four but Meyer was too accurate as Warriors completed their second win of the season.Player of the week – Jon Kent
Kent’s allround performance this week for Dolphins gave a reminder of his talent; six years ago he was called up to make his debut against Australia, but has only played two ODIs so far in his career. He took his 100th one-day wicket, removing Vernon Philander whose partnership with Ryan Canning was beginning to threaten. He was no less impressive with the bat, the highlight of his fifty a huge six over long-on.

Sean Williams turns his back on Zimbabwe

Sean Williams has ended weeks of speculation by confirming he does not intend making himself available for Zimbabwe

Steven Price in Harare29-Oct-2008Sean Williams has ended weeks of speculation by confirming he does not intend making himself available for Zimbabwe. There had been rumours that he was considering his future after he declined to join the recent tours of Canada and Kenya.Williams, the former Under-19 captain who is now playing his cricket in Johannesburg, told local media sources that he had quit the team altogether. He is said to have been frustrated by “practice without matches”, blaming the Zimbabwe board for the inactivity. The news will be a massive blow to Zimbabwe on the eve of their home ODI series against Sri Lanka. In the last fortnight they have suffered defeats at the hands of Kenya and Uganda and tied with Canada in one-day games. The news comes hot on the heels of the recent loss of Brendan Taylor, one of their leading players, who has chosen to play club cricket in Australia after one too many disagreements with the Zimbabwe board. There is also uncertainty over the position of Tatenda Taibu who only joined the recent tour at the 11th hour after a major row with the board. While he did play, he was believed to be deeply frustrated at the way he had been treated.
