Celtic: ‘Strong chance’ Howe completes move

With another season done for Celtic and the transfer window rapidly approaching, they could really do with a new manager.

They still have no permanent boss in the Parkhead dugout while the Bhoys are also missing a director of football.

Proceedings are never handled easily at Paradise, are they?

What’s the word?

Celtic have been searching for a new manager since the end of February but because of a number of complications, John Kennedy is still in interim charge.

A deal to bring Eddie Howe to Glasgow is edging closer to completion and those thoughts are echoed by The Sun’s Alan Nixon.

Amid interest being revealed in former Chelsea manager Frank Lampard, it still looks as though Howe is the number one choice for Celtic.

Nixon took to Twitter after being asked whether the ex-Bournemouth boss would be given the reins.

He responded emphatically with two words; “Strong chance.”

Exciting news

All Celtic supporters want is something to take their mind off this arduous and troubling campaign.

At the moment, the thought of losing their grasp on the title to their biggest rivals, Rangers, is still stinging significantly.

They weren’t just beaten to the Premiership crown but they were absolutely slaughtered, finishing 25 points behind Steven Gerrard’s men.

After being so far ahead of the pack for years, Celtic have suddenly found themselves a couple of campaign’s behind the Gers.

Their squad is ageing and could now do with a massive facelift. However, if players like Odsonne Edouard and Kristoffer Ajer head for the exit door it’ll set them back even further.

That said, the arrival of a new manager, particularly one of Howe’s stature would go a long way to curing the pain. It would also demonstrate that Celtic are on the right track to be revived.

The 43-year-old’s CV is impressive for what he did at Bournemouth, but he was initially in charge during an even tougher set of circumstances than Celtic find themselves in.

He first took over the Cherries in 2008 when they were on the brink of relegation from League Two. They’d been deducted 17 points right at the start of that campaign after going into administration.

Howe not only saved them from dropping into non-league but in 2009/10, they achieved promotion to League One despite being in the middle of a transfer embargo.

It was a miraculous achievement and if he can revive a team from the doldrums like that, he can certainly rescue Celtic.

To hear that the Englishman is so close to completing his move will be music to the ears of the Green Brigade. He can’t arrive soon enough.

Celtic: Kennedy drops Howe hint

Celtic interim boss John Kennedy has dropped a hint as to when the Hoops could announce a new permanent manager.

The Lowdown: Howe set to be the next manager

Eddie Howe has been the man most heavily linked with the job following Neil Lennon’s resignation, and it seems as if he’s closing in on a move to Glasgow.

Talks between Howe and owner Dermot Desmond first took place at the beginning of April. Reports from talkSPORT in recent days have suggested that the 43-year-old has now agreed on a deal with the Hoops and will be in the Celtic Park dugout for the 2021/22 season.

Howe is expected to reunite with some members of his Bournemouth coaching staff, with the Cherries currently busy with the Championship playoffs.

The Latest: Kennedy’s hint

Reports last week from a Celtic source insisted that the interim boss was in the dark over the club’s plans and is unsure if he’ll be at Parkhead next season.

However, talking after the 4-0 win over St Johnstone on Wednesday evening, as reported by The Scottish Sun, Kennedy seemed to hint that an appointment could be made as early as next week, following the final match.

“It’s probably got to the stage now where it’s went so long that we’re probably expecting something beyond the last game.

“We’ve kind of got our heads around that.

“Yeah, there’s been an element of frustration from the support but it’s not done out of any sort of badness.

“It’s done because they’re going through the process properly, which is my view of it.

“They’re making sure that they do the right thing at the right time.

“It’s obviously went this far, they’ll obviously have to make a decision soon enough.

“But in terms of the game at the weekend, that will become the priority for myself in terms of preparing the players.

“We’ll come in and train tomorrow as we would, prepare on Friday and we’ll attack the game on Saturday.

“We’ll see what happens beyond that.”

The Verdict: Time to get cracking

In our opinion, the Hoops have no time for any off-field holiday and need to get cracking on several incomings and outgoings ahead of the new season.

You’d expect Howe and new Celtic CEO Dominic McKay to work closely together in regards to recruitment, alongside a yet to be appointed director of football.

It’ll also be interesting to see what this means for Kennedy. Reports last month claimed Howe would be happy to keep both Kennedy and Gavin Strachan, however, with some staff members from Bournemouth expected to join him, could that now change?

Celtic manager search clouded with doubt

If you’d tipped an hourglass upside down when Neil Lennon first left Celtic, it would have ticked to its end way before Dermot Desmond even had a clue who his replacement could be.

This has been a long and arduous few weeks for the Bhoys, who – try as they might – can’t seem to find a successor from anywhere.

What’s the word?

There have been several faces in line to become the new manager of Celtic. Roy Keane was among the early favourites after holding an interview but, after things went rather quiet on that front, he’s now back in contention.

Lucien Favre has been another option but Eddie Howe remains the outstanding candidate the Hoops hierarchy are reportedly after.

That being said, we’re now several weeks into the hiring process without nearing any form of announcement. This should be a worrying time for everyone associated with the football club, but a troublesome message from journalist Dean Jones on the Touchline Talk podcast should only add further concern.

He said: “So Eddie Howe, he’s there if they want him, but I think he’s just keeping an eye on what English jobs might crop up. I think he’s made been made aware that there might be a couple of openings coming for him and it might be better suited, but I do still think he’s in the frame at Celtic potentially. Roy Keane that just never goes away.”

Jones continued: “I’ve got to be honest with you, every time, every week I make calls on this and every time that message slightly changes and they just don’t seem to know what they want. It’s so important to decide what is the identity of your setup going to be from here? There’s changes all over the place at the top level of Celtic happening right now.”

Clouded with doubt

Lennon left Celtic with the Bhoys in absolute peril. They were 18 points adrift of Rangers, yet he still had the support of the boardroom. Had he not resigned, it wouldn’t have been a great surprise if he was still sat in the dugout at Paradise.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-celtic-manager-and-transfer-news-howe-lampard-klimala-ajer-gossip” title= “Read the latest Celtic manager and transfer news!”]

His exit may have caught Desmond and co unawares but it’s now nearly two months to the day that Celtic’s hunt for a new manager began. Therefore, to hear that the message is constantly changing and that the Hoops are unsure of what they actually want is quite damning.

It’s also sending out the wrong message to supporters. The Green Brigade have already held mass protests outside Parkhead, while they’ve staunchly questioned Desmond and his companions.

The majority shareholder has revealed that he won’t sell his shares in the club, but news like this will only add to the fury from supporter groups. Desmond hasn’t been overly competent this season when it’s come to behind-the-scenes matters and the prolonged manager search just about sums it up.

Howe may be the first name on their list but, with Keane sat in second place after taking part in an interview, it just shows they don’t know what they want.

The former is a reserved and calculated character but Keane is a hot-headed, no-nonsense type of individual; they couldn’t be more different if they tried.

With such a big summer of change potentially on the cards, Desmond needs to work out what the club actually needs. There cannot afford to be any more uncertainty at Celtic after the campaign they’ve endured.

Pundit rules out Spurs winning Carabao Cup

Dean Windass has exclusively told Football FanCast that he doesn’t think Tottenham will beat Manchester City in Sunday’s Carabao Cup final, even if Harry Kane plays.

Spurs go in search of their first major trophy since winning the same competition in 2008 when they face the seven-times winners and three-times defending champions at Wembley.

But Tottenham’s chances of ending their 13-year trophy drought could rest on the fitness of their star man Kane.

The England striker has been in scintillating form throughout the season, but hobbled off against Everton on Friday with his latest ankle problem, and faces a race against time to be fit.

But Windass believes that with Manchester City out for revenge following their FA Cup exit last weekend, it’ll be too big of a task to beat Pep Guardiola’s men, who haven’t lost in the League Cup for more than four years.

“I don’t think they’ve got any chance of beating City even if Harry Kane is fit,” Windass told Football FanCast.

“Ryan Mason has got to get everybody on board. But it’s going to be a tough game against Man City, especially after them getting beaten in the semi-finals, so they’ll be wounded.

But with Jose Mourinho no longer in charge, and the squad on a clean slate, Windass made no secret as to who should be their front-three moving forward.

He added:

“I would like to see Gareth Bale get a number of games from now until the end of the season with Son and Kane upfront.

“You’ve got more chance of winning football matches with them three upfront than with them not in the team.”

Pundit has been impressed by Phillips

In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, Steve Howey, who made 278 appearances during his career, has admitted that he was never convinced how good Kalvin Phillips was until this season.

Phillips is one of the most important players for Leeds United as he has become the anchor who allows players such as Raphinha, Jack Harrison and Stuart Dallas to stay higher up the pitch, and his WhoScored rating of 7.06 proves how important he is.

The £4,500 per week midfielder has also become an England regular despite this still being just his first season in the Premier League and Gareth Southgate trusts him to start for the Three Lions during Jordan Henderson’s absence.

Speaking on how he has been won over by Phillips this season and what he thought of him when he first saw him play live, Howey told FFC:

“I think a lot of clubs will be looking at him in the summer, but I must admit that I wasn’t 100% sure what all the fuss was about with Kalvin Phillips.

“I saw him against Everton, and at the time I was with Gareth Southgate and I said to him, ‘yeah he is a top player’. He’s comfortable on the ball, his distribution is very good and then you put him in the England team, and it looks as though he’s been there for years.”

Phillips has picked up a few injuries this season and Leeds have struggled without their midfielder general at times because he offers the defence protection but he also gets attacks started quickly.

Marcelo Bielsa has guided Leeds to a comfortable position in the table but the Argentine is still yet to sign a new contract at Elland Road beyond this summer.

Leeds told Bielsa may walk away

In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, former Hull City striker Dean Windass has urged Leeds United to give Marcelo Bielsa what he wants this summer or risk him walking away.

The Whites have enjoyed a superb season and currently sit 11th in the Premier League table.

They are currently nine points clear of 18th-placed Fulham and are likely looking up rather than down as they try to finish the season strongly.

Bielsa, though, has yet to sign a new contract at Elland Road, with his current deal set to expire in the summer, as he only signs 12-month extensions each time he puts pen to paper.

The Daily Mirror have reported previously that he will sit down with the club to thrash out a new deal in the summer.

But Windass has told Football FanCast exclusively that Leeds need to tread carefully and ensure that they give him everything he asks for in the transfer market or risk seeing him walk away.

And he fears such a scenario would see Leeds again plunged into a media circus.

He told FFC: “You know what Leeds fans are like. They’re ruthless, they’re hostile, you see what happened with Dennis Wise, Gus Poyet, Kevin Blackwell. If the supporters are not happy, they’ll let you know about it because they’re diehard fans.

“If Bielsa leaves, of his own accord, then the supporters will go, ‘oh, legend’, if he goes because he doesn’t get what he wants then the board will get it.

“And it’ll be, again, Sky Sports News, talking about Leeds United’s off-field situation again. Which has been going on for the last five or six years. There’s always been a drama off the field.

“It’ll be a drama off the field if Bielsa says, ‘yes, I want to stay but the reason I want to stay is because I want A, B, C, D, and E, and if I don’t get it, see you later.’”

Leeds spent big in the summer transfer window to bring in a number of first-team players and have reaped the rewards this season.

Bielsa may be hoping for similar this summer.

Celtic warned over potential ‘disaster’

Former Scotland international Alan Hutton believes that Celtic appointing a new sporting director could turn out to be a “disaster.”

Warning issued to Celtic

This comes after Sky Sports journalist Anthony Joseph claimed that the Hoops are looking to appoint someone who has experience in the role, with the likes of David Webb, Fergal Harkin and Matteo Tognozzi being considered for the position.

Reports back in January suggested that the Parkhead club are due to undergo a mass overhaul in the summer, with transfer guru Nick Hammond and recruitment chief Gary Penrice set to follow Neil Lennon out the exit door.

Speaking to Football Insider, Hutton reacted to the prospect of Celtic bringing a sporting director in but also sent a warning to the club.

“It seems to be going that way,” he said. “It takes a little bit of pressure, I think, off the manager and most teams are doing it.

“It doesn’t always work out. I think it has to be a solid relationship between the manager and the sporting director. If they’re pushing in different directions it is always going to end in disaster.

“It’ll work if they can get somebody there who gets on well with the manager. If they’ve got the same ideas, same philosophy, same way of moving the team forward.

“It’s as simple as that. I understand why they’re doing it and it just seems to be the way that football’s going at the moment.”

Transfer Tavern Verdict

We think the club should follow the path that the former Hoops boss Brendan Rodgers suggested – bringing in a Director of Football.

But Hutton is right – Celtic could be in danger of repeating the recruitment mistakes that have been made during the 2020/21 campaign if they do not make the right selection.

With the new chief executive Dominic McKay set to start his new role in the summer, time will tell whether Hutton’s warnings are heeded.
