Elite EPL finds no favour with ECB

Although no official statement has been made to the media, it is reported that the ECB executive has rejected proposals for a nine-team elite Twenty20 competition. It had been thought the real debate would be between the counties, who had already expressed very differing opinions, but it appears that the scheme has already been scuppered by the ECB.Rather than a streamlined competition, the proposal that is believed to have found favour is one that includes all 18 first-class counties as well as two overseas sides, one of which is almost certain to be fielded by Allen Stanford. Critics will be quick to point out that rather than being an elite tournament, what will be offered is an even more bloated event with talent spread even more thinly. The original plans, which were leaked last week, caused a schism among the first-class counties and yesterday Jim Cumbes, the chief executive of Lancashire, resigned as chairman of the chief executives of the first-class counties after he was accused by four fellow chief executives of not being honest with them over his county’s involvement in the scheme.”There has been a lot of panic and paranoia over this and I can understand the nervousness,” Cumbes told The Times.

The ECB have granted Yorkshire £600,000 to install a state-of-the-art drainage system at Headingley. The relaying of the pitch will begin in mid-September, forcing Yorkshire to switch their final Championship match away from Headingley whose last match this season will be held on August 2. Scarborough is the venue for two other Championship matches in August.”We are looking at whether to play there or somewhere else, an alternative outground,” Stewart Regan, the Yorkshire chief executive, told . “Scarborough (CC) are keen, but we hope that the town and the council are also keen to have a week of cricket. We are looking at what other benefits there are for the club.”Yorkshire have also requested to host their first couple of games next season away from Headingley, though the county remains confident the extensive work will be finished come April.

Everton: Benitez keen on Seferovic

Everton have joined the race for SL Benfica striker Haris Seferovic after Rafael Benitez’s seal of approval, according to Portuguese newspaper Correio de Manha (via Sport Witness).

The lowdown

Seferovic was directly involved in 29 goals – 22 goals, seven assists – in just 31 league appearances last season.

According to WhoScored, he excels at finishing, creating chances and winning aerial duels.

The 29-year-old was called up to represent Switzerland at the European Championships and bagged three goals, including a memorable double in the Round of 16 as the Swiss knocked out world champions France.

The latest

Seferovic is an option that ‘pleases’ Benitez, and as such Everton will rival Premier League sides West Ham United and Wolverhampton Wanderers in the race for his signature.

The Blues have been made aware that it will take €25million (£21.6million) to persuade the Primeira Liga outfit to part with him.

Intriguingly, while Sky Sports journalist Pete Graves reported on Monday that Everton want to sign a back-up striker, this report says Seferovic is viewed as a potential replacement for Dominic Calvert-Lewin or Richarlison should they be lured away.

The verdict

Of the two potential departures mooted in the report, Richarlison is probably the more likely. It’s already been suggested that Carlo Ancelotti could look to bring him to Real Madrid.

So then you wonder if Seferovic would be an effective back-up to Calvert-Lewin. Ideally, Benitez should want someone with a different set of attributes, but there’s some definite overlap there with both players serving as effective target men.

Another reason to question the move would be Seferovic’s age, but there’s perhaps little prospect of recruiting a young, up-and-coming forward when Calvert-Lewin is only 24 and seems to have the spot locked down for years. A more experienced deputy may be the logical way to go, but one with the pace and agility to offer a different style to Calvert-Lewin.

In other news, Everton are interested in loaning this star from European giants.

Ten Hag can end Spurs manager nightmare

Erik ten Hag is back in the frame for the vacant Tottenham Hotspur job for the third time…

What’s the word?

That’s according to ESPN, who claim that the North London outfit are back at square one in their tumultuous managerial search after deciding to not appoint Gennaro Gattuso following backlash from supporters.

Spurs pulled out of a move to hire Paulo Fonseca when the former AC Milan midfielder became available, having left Fiorentina after just 23 days.

It’s now thought that the club will reassess potential candidates, which the Ajax supremo is thought to still feature despite signing a contract extension at the Eredivise champions and being linked twice before.

Time to end it

After so many twists and turns in the space of just two months, it is now surely time for chairman Daniel Levy to put an end to the Spurs managerial circus.

Jose Mourinho was sacked in mid-April and since then, it seems as if the Premier League side have missed out on over a handful of top targets.

It all started with Julian Nagelsmann, who opted for Bayern Munich, and then Brendan Rodgers, Mauricio Pochettino, Antonio Conte and now the aforementioned two former Serie A coaches.

Ten Hag is one name that has remained constant in their search, so the Lilywhites hierarchy must look to turn their interest into something legitimate now.

Since day one, he’s been one of the clear and obvious fits for the club. Levy was said to be after an attack-minded boss who could develop the club’s young stars. More or less another Pochettino.

And that’s exactly what the 51-year-old has done at Ajax.

Over in Holland, he’s amassed an impressive 74% win rate over 167 matches in charge by playing an expansive and exciting system that has been created through inspiration from Man City’s Pep Guardiola and Johan Cruyff.

Furthermore, that includes a whopping 2.34 points and 2.71 goals per game.

Progressing talents like Mattiajs de Ligt and Frenkie de Jong have seen the Ajax earn lucrative profits, and that’s all down to the Dutchman not only trusting them to start but also his “remarkable” ability to develop youngsters.

As such, Ten Hag has been lauded as “one of the most exciting coaching talents in world football” by Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, whilst football.london reporter Alasdair Gold claimed he would be “another Pochettino.”

“Everything I’m hearing about Ten Hag is that Spurs see him as very much similar to Pochettino in the sense he’s a players’ coach and can improve what they have got and bring them on,” he said during a live Periscope. “He’s excellent with younger players. “I wouldn’t discount him if Spurs can’t get Pochettino, he’s seen as another Pochettino.”

Given the lack of options out there, Levy must turn to the Dutchman to finally end this nightmare. He cannot afford to risk this disaster rumbling on into pre-season, which is due to start next month.

Everton transfer update on Rafael Leao

Everton are reportedly in a race with a Premier League rival to sign Rafael Leao in the summer transfer window.

The Lowdown: Back-up striker needed

The Goodison Park club certainly need a reliable back-up striker to ease the burden on Dominic Calvert-Lewin when it comes to goals.

The England international was the Toffees’ top scorer in all competitions last season with 21, and while Richarlison scored 13 (Transfermarkt), he often plays on the wing to accommodate Calvert-Lewin.

Given that the futures of Moise Kean and Cenk Tosun are uncertain as well, as they were both sent out on loan over the past year, the Toffees really do need to think about signing a new centre-forward.

The Latest: Everton eye Leao

As per Calciomercato, both Everton and Wolves are interested in signing Leao, and AC Milan would be willing to let him go if they can recoup what they paid for him, reported by the news outlet as €28m (£24.1m).

Marseille are also said to be interested in his signature as Milan look to sell the 22-year-old in order to help fund other targets.

The Verdict: Sign Leao

It is clear that Everton need to sign another striker, and Leao could perfectly complement Calvert-Lewin with his added pace and willingness to run in behind.

The Portugal youth international has previously been compared to both Cristiano Ronaldo and Kylian Mbappe, and at just 22 years of age, still has the potential to reach the very top of the game.

Everton would get one over their divisional rivals Wolves by signing him, as he could well be the key for them qualifying for European competition in 2022 considering the Toffees’ lack of goals compared to other top-half Premier League clubs last term.

In other news, find out what managerial update has left these Toffees fans buzzing!

Man Utd linked to Denis Zakaria

Manchester United must swoop for Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Denis Zakaria this summer as they look to secure their first Premier League title since 2013.

What’s the story?

The 24-year-old appears to be available as the upcoming transfer window approaches after failing to agree terms on a new deal with his current club.

Zakaria’s contract is set to expire after next season’s conclusion and could, therefore, be available at a reduced price over the coming months.

While United haven’t been linked with a move for the Switzerland international, The Athletic have highlighted him as someone Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should be looking to sign, and they’re absolutely right to do so.

Manchester United must swoop

United undoubtedly progressed on the pitch in 2020/21, but the lack of silverware and a 12-point gap to Premier League champions Manchester City tells its own story.

With their domestic rivals already making moves in the transfer market, acquiring some quality additions will be vital if the Old Trafford outfit are to continue moving forwards.

One area of particular weakness is the defensive midfield role. While Scott McTominay and Fred have filled in admirably in that position, neither man is naturally suited to the demands it requires.

Solskjaer has often opted for a combination of the two men in a double pivot for added protection, but bringing in one star who can do it on his own will free up an attacking midfielder to roam forwards and play closer to the opposition goal.

However, with United appearing to prioritise a move for Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho in a deal that is expected to reach the £80 million mark, they may be shopping on a budget when it comes to a holding midfielder.

West Ham United’s Declan Rice had been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford in the past, although the financial effect of the ongoing pandemic means the Red Devils are unlikely to be able to afford both young English aces this summer.

Therefore, a move for Zakaria would make perfect sense for Solskjaer, especially with Paul Pogba’s contract set to expire in just 12 months’ time.

In fact, in recent weeks, United’s Frenchman has been touted with an exit from Old Trafford this summer, with reports suggesting that the club will be looking to sell if he doesn’t sign a new contract to extend his stay.

The highly-rated Zakaria meanwhile has impressed throughout his time with Monchengladbach, earning praise from former manager Marco Rose.

“He is a very complete footballer who still has a lot of development potential,” revealed the American tactician.

“He has incredible dynamics, understanding of the game and is not yet at the end of his development.”

Although his current market value is £27m (as per Transfermarkt), United could negotiate that price down and secure themselves a bargain, meaning the club’s hierarchy must swoop for Zakaria as Solskjaer looks to return the club to its former glories.

Spurs discussions held with Martinez

According to a report by The Mirror, Tottenham Hotspur have had a ‘conversation’ with Belgium national team coach Roberto Martinez.

The Lowdown: Spurs managerial saga, will it ever end?

Over this last week, the Spurs managerial chase has taken many twists and turns. After interest cooled in bringing Mauricio Pochettino back to north London, with Paris-Saint Germain refusing to budge, attention then switched to Antonio Conte.

Talks were heating up for the Italian and, at one stage, there were some outlets even describing it as a ‘done deal’. However, following a breakdown in discussions, it is now unlikely they will return to the table with Conte (The Telegraph), duly dragging Spurs back to square one.

The Latest: Spurs discussions held with Martinez…

As per The Mirror, it is believed that Tottenham have held discussions with current Belgium manager Martinez over the role.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-news/” title=”Spurs latest news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Indeed, Spurs and the Spaniard have allegedly had a ‘conversation’ over the vacancy in north London, but the 47-year-old refuses to go into too much depth until after this summer’s European Championship.

The Red Devils will take on Russia, Denmark and Finland in that order as they look to secure a place in the knockout rounds and potentially go on to win the tournament.

The Verdict: Underrated candidate, but Spurs need to act…

As these discussions emerge with Martinez, you can make the argument he is an underrated candidate given his attacking philosophy and his description as ‘world class’ by fellow one-time Premier League manager Alex McLeish.

He also guided Belgium to their first World Cup semi-final since the 1980s three years ago and has won the FA Cup with Wigan Athletic.

These aren’t his first links to the Tottenham job either, with the Daily Star reporting back in 2019 that he was ‘ready to dump’ Belgium for the Spurs job and wanted to succeed Pochettino at the time.

However, his stance on not having in-depth talks until after the Euros could mean that Spurs should turn to other options.

Chairman Daniel Levy will need to make an appointment as soon as possible in sufficient preparation for the 2021/22 season, especially if they wish to make a head-start on incomings and outgoings this summer.
