Wade ton puts Australia in control

Matthew Wade tightened both his grip on the Test wicketkeeping spot and Australia’s grasp on the Test with a century that frustrated and demoralised West Indies on the second day in Dominica

The Report by Brydon Coverdale24-Apr-2012
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsMatthew Wade showed his ability to build an innings at the right tempo•AFP

Matthew Wade tightened both his grip on the Test wicketkeeping spot and Australia’s grasp on the Test with a century that frustrated and demoralised West Indies on the second day in Dominica. The hosts began the morning on top but Wade’s assured innings pushed Australia to a total they were happy with, before another lacklustre batting display from West Indies left Australia in control at stumps. The drawn Trinidad Test secured the Frank Worrell Trophy for Australia but West Indies still had the chance to level the series in the final Test, and their strong performance on the first day made that a real possibility. But 24 hours later they were all but spent. West Indies ended the second day on 165 for 8, still trailing Australia by 163 runs, with Shivnarine Chanderpaul on 34 and Ravi Rampaul on 24.The one ray of hope for West Indies was that their partnership had blossomed to 45 runs, and they knew that a similarly dogged lower-order stand for Australia – Wade and Ben Hilfenhaus put on 102 for the ninth wicket – had altered the course of the match. But too much had been left for Chanderpaul and Rampaul as Nathan Lyon and his colleagues weaved their way through the West Indies top and middle order.Hilfenhaus set the innings on the right path for Australia when he had Kraigg Brathwaite caught at slip for a duck from a ball the batsman could have left alone. Ricky Ponting was off the field at the time and Ryan Harris was deputising at first slip, and although he didn’t grab the catch cleanly at first, he collected it on the second bite to leave West Indies at 1 for 1.Kieran Powell and Adrian Barath put on 61 for the second wicket and there were occasional nervy moments, like when Powell was on 30 and was put down at cover by Ponting off the bowling of Lyon. But the breakthrough didn’t come until Barath (29) inside-edged onto his leg against the offspin of Lyon and was snapped up by Ed Cowan at short leg.It was a busy day for Cowan, who in the final few overs was forced from the field with a wrist injury sustained when he was fielding at short leg and Rampaul smashed a Michael Clarke full toss straight at him. Clarke and Cowan had enjoyed a happier moment earlier in the day when the captain gambled on the introduction of David Warner, who struck in his first over when Darren Bravo inside-edged onto his pad and was caught by Cowan in close for 10.Smart stats

Matthew Wade’s century is only the fourth by an Australian wicketkeeper against West Indies. The previous Australian wicketkeeper to score a century against West Indies was Adam Gilchrist in Trinidad in 2003.

Since 2000, Australian wicketkeepers have scored 20 centuries, the most by any team. Sri Lanka and England are joint-second, with 11 hundreds.

Wade’s strike rate of 72.60 is the third-highest for an Australian batsman against West Indies in matches since 1990 (100-plus scores only).

The 102-run stand between Wade and Ben Hilfenhaus is the second-highest ninth-wicket partnership for Australia against West Indies and their tenth century stand overall for the ninth wicket.

Shane Shillingford’s 6 for 119 is third on the list of best bowling performances by West Indian spinners against Australia. Lance Gibbs is on top with his 6 for 29 in Guyana in 1965.

In this series, Shivnarine Chanderpaul has faced 596 balls while being dismissed twice (298 balls per dismissal). In contrast, the other top-order (1-7) West Indian batsmen have a balls-per-dismissal value of 56.88.

Powell fought hard for his 40 but disappointed himself by playing on to Lyon, before Narsingh Deonarine was lbw on review to Harris for 7, having originally been given not out. The wickets kept coming. West Indies were 103 for 6 when Carlton Baugh inside-edged and gave Lyon his third wicket with another catch in close to Cowan, who then threw down the stumps to run out Darren Sammy for 10.Next ball Shane Shillingford played on to Mitchell Starc for a golden duck, hardly what the Dominican crowd expected from their home-town hero. But of course the runs shouldn’t have been left to Shillingford to make. He had already done his bit, and then some, by finishing the Australian innings with 6 for 119. Unfortunately for West Indies, the last two of those wickets came after significant tail-wagging.Australia added 116 to their overnight total for the loss of their final three wickets, and they were very important runs. The visitors were eventually dismissed for 338 less than ten minutes before the scheduled lunch break to bring an early finish to the session, which was a fine one for Wade and the Australians, despite an early setback when Starc was run out due to a lazy piece of work when he failed to ground his bat.But that brought Wade and Hilfenhaus together and they frustrated the hosts with a 102-run partnership, an Australian record for the ninth wicket in the Caribbean. Wade was the dominant partner and he showed an impeccable ability to read the match, having initially taken his time to establish himself on the first afternoon following Australia’s middle-order battles. He gradually started to play his shots, with cover-drives and pulls, and began to go for some more attacking strokes as he really found his rhythm.Three times he dispatched the spinners over the boundary, once with a huge six down the ground off Deonarine and twice from consecutive slog-sweeps off Shillingford. Those strokes brought him rapidly into the nineties and he betrayed no nerves, speeding towards his hundred, until he was sensibly sent back by Hilfenhaus on 99 when he wanted a single that was clearly not there.Wade brought up his century with a crunchy cover-drive for four off Kemar Roach, and the Australians were on their feet in the dressing room, knowing all too well that they were in a spot of bother when Wade had come to the crease on the first day. His success also gave him a strong claim to incumbency for the first Test of Australia’s home summer, regardless of whether Brad Haddin is back in the mix by then.Wade fell for 106 when another slog sweep off Shillingford flew a little too high and Bravo at deep midwicket took a brilliant catch, lobbing the ball back into the field of play before he stepped over the boundary, and stepped back in to complete the take. Two balls later, Hilfenhaus was bowled for 19 trying for an agricultural slog over midwicket and the innings was over.It was a satisfying finish for Shillingford in his first Test in his home country, but West Indies would have been frustrated not to snuff out the Australian tail after the early loss of Starc for 35. Starc was the victim of his own negligence, and some excellent West Indian fielding, when he ambled back for a third run after Wade’s straight drive was saved inside the rope by a sliding Brathwaite.Wade called to Starc to let him know the throw was coming to the striker’s end but Starc did not heed the advice and chose not to slide his bat, and replays confirmed his front foot had not yet touched down inside the crease when Baugh whipped the bails off. It was just about the last thing that went right for West Indies all day.

Suraj Randiv, Jeevan Mendis and Seekkuge Prasanna, who were in the squad against Pakistan, were left out, with the selectors sticking with Rangana Herath and Ajantha Mendis, who are already in South Africa.Nuwan Kulasekara, who has not played for Sri Lanka since picking up an injury in their home ODI series against Australia in August, was initially set to join the squad for the second and third Tests in South Africa. Sri Lanka’s sports ministry, however, vetoed his selection and the uncapped Kanishka Alvitigala was picked instead. Alvitigala did not get a game in the Test series and has now been replaced by Kulasekara.Malinga, who is retired from Test cricket, and Tharanga were the expected additions to the squad in South Africa, while allrounder Kosala Kulasekara, who played only one Test and one ODI on the tour of the UAE, retained his spot.Herath, who is considered more suited to Tests, was kept for the ODIs after he took nine wickets in Sri Lanka’s upset of South Africa in Durban.

India matches key to Pakistan's future

Pakistan’s future as an international cricket team could hinge on the willingness of India to resume bilateral relations, according to a source close to the ICC Pakistan Task Team

Andrew Miller09-Jul-2011

India and Pakistan met in the World Cup semi-final but bilateral ties still seem a long way off•AFP

Pakistan’s future as an international cricket team could hinge India’s willingness to resume bilateral relations, according to a source close to the ICC Pakistan Task Team, which recently published a 38-page report on the future of the game in the country. The PTT, which was headed up by the ECB chairman Giles Clarke and drew on the experience of three former Test captains in Ramiz Raja, Mike Brearley and Greg Chappell, presented its findings at the ICC’s annual conference in Hong Kong last week. The report addressed a number of wide-ranging issues, from the quality of balls used in domestic cricket to the structure of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) itself. The report has been criticised for being whimsical in tone, because it failed to address the most fundamental problem facing Pakistan at present – the deteriorating security situation which led, in March 2009, to a terrorist attack on the Sri Lankan team bus in Lahore. However, in the opinion of the men who compiled the report, the most pertinent issue is one of finances, because unlike terrorism, that remains something that the international cricket community is capable of addressing.”The ICC has a security task force, but it can only talk about security when you are dealing with a country where it can be provided,” the source told ESPNcricinfo. “It’s not for cricketers to lecture governments about that.”Pakistan cricket is right on the edge financially. The report makes it bluntly clear what’s necessary, which is that the Pakistan government and ICC must work together, and that India should play Pakistan if they are going to survive economically. That recommendation is spelt out in bold type on the sixth page of the PTT report, and does not couch its words in chiding India for its failure to assist a fellow Test nation. The two teams have not faced each another in a bilateral Test series since November 2007, with the following year’s terror attacks in Mumbai putting an instant freeze on diplomatic relations. Nevertheless, in that time, Pakistan have played overseas series against every other Test nation bar Bangladesh – with two of those, against Australia and South Africa in 2010, taking place at neutral venues.”Several other boards [are] going out of their way to ensure touring commitments could be honoured and new opportunities conceived,” the report states. “There is one notable exception, however, which must be highlighted in the strongest possible terms.”The absence of the traditional bilateral series between Pakistan and India from the international cricket calendar is denying millions of cricket loving fans across the world from enjoying an iconic series. It is also hurting the sport, particularly in Pakistan and the PTT sees no reason why this great sporting rivalry should not be restored as soon as possible, even if on neutral soil.”The PTT fully appreciates the historical issues, but urges the ICC Executive Board and all related parties including both Governments to seek a swift resolution to enable this great iconic series to resume to the benefit of all stakeholders in both countries and the rest of the world.”Reaction to the report has been muted in both India and Pakistan. The PCB has set out a ten-day time-frame in which to respond to the PTT’s 63 recommendations, but is reportedly unhappy with some aspects, particularly those concerning selection and contracts. India’s government, meanwhile, remains to be convinced of the merits of a resumption of cricket ties. From a strictly sporting point of view, however, the PTT believes that the Indo-Pak rivalry is the cornerstone of the modern international game, as demonstrated by the massive interest in the recent World Cup semi-final in Mohali. “India needs iconic series too,” the source said. “The ratings speak for themselves.”If you had a Pakistan-India series every two years, even at a neutral venue, how much money would that put into both India and Pakistan cricket? One only needs to look to the Ashes to see what a truly iconic series is worth.”The report, which has been drawn largely from conversations with Pakistani players and administrators living in Dubai, Pakistan and England, has been described as a blueprint for helping Pakistan cricket drive itself forward. But in the short term at least, the country needs assistance from its nearest and largest neighbour to find its feet in the international game once again.

de Bruyn steers Surrey towards semi-finals

Surrey strengthened their bid for a place in the last four of the ClydesdaleBank 40 with a nail-biting three-wicket win over Warwickshire at Guildford

Scorecard
Surrey strengthened their bid for a place in the last four of the ClydesdaleBank 40 with a nail-biting three-wicket win over Warwickshire at Guildford. The result was sealed with just seven deliveries to spare when Zander de Bruyn, who made an unbeaten 84 off 92 balls, cut Neil Carter through extra cover forfour.Yasir Arafat, who took five for 45, also starred for the Lions, who were madeto work hard for their victory after Rikki Clarke hit a dazzling 76 off 61 ballsfor the visitors.Having won the toss, Warwickshire posted 225 for 8, which looked barelyadequate given the compact surroundings. Arafat struck twice in the sixth over, with Carter caught at deep square leg and Varun Chopra snapped up at backward point – both by Matthew Spriegel. Will Porterfield was caught at the wicket four overs later off Tim Linley, butthen Tim Ambrose (39) shared in stands of 53 and 55 with Jim Troughton andClarke respectively. The visitors only sparked into life when former Surrey man Clarke came to thecrease in the 23rd over, following the loss of Troughton to Zafar Ansari’sleft-arm spin for 27, though the Bears’ skipper had previously swept ChrisSchofield for six.Clarke lifted Ansari over extra cover for a maximum on his way to a 51-ballhalf-century, which the former Surrey man brought up with a cover drive for fouroff Jade Dernbach.Arafat’s return to the attack produced the wicket of Ambrose, who, backingaway, had his bails trimmed by the Pakistan all-rounder. Clarke and Chris Woakes added 55 in five overs, during which Clarke clipped Arafat over wide long-on for six. But then Arafat had Woakes caught at extra cover and Clarke at deep mid-wicket to register his best figures in one-day cricket for three years.Surrey’s reply got off to the worst possible start when Rory Hamilton-Brown wasbowled for a duck by Jeetan Patel and Jason Roy (seven) danced down the pitch toWoakes and cut the ball on to his stumps.Steven Davies (23) was caught at short extra cover off a leading edge, but TomMaynard and De Bruyn then set about laying the foundations for a successfulassault.Surrey were up against it when Maynard (39), Matthew Spriegel (20) and Arafatall fell to catches in the deep but Ansari’s 22 in 16 deliveries, which includedtwo pulled sixes, finally provided the impetus his side needed. And De Bruyn completed the job in tandem with Schofield (13 not out).
