As well as Davies: 3/10 Spurs dud must be axed for the Europa League final

Tottenham Hotspur sunk to another defeat, their 20th of the season, in the Premier League when they were beaten 2-0 by Crystal Palace on Sunday.

A double from Eberechi Eze, who scored just before and just after the half-time break, put Spurs to the sword, and it could have been even more if not for eight saves from Antonin Kinsky between the sticks.

The Czech star was given a rare run-out in goal as he is not eligible to play in the Europa League, but the shot-stopper was not the only player who was given a rare chance to impress, as Ben Davies also came in at centre-back.

Why Ben Davies should not start the Europa League final

The Wales international came in to start in the left-sided centre-back position against Palace, after he was an unused substitute in both legs of the semi-final clash with Bodo/Glimt.

Davies won seven of his 13 duels against the Eagles, just over half, and put in a decent, but unimpressive, display at the heart of the defence. He certainly did not do enough to suggest that the manager should keep him in the team for the Europa League final after the clash with Aston Villa next weekend.

As you can see in the table above, Micky van de Ven has been far more defensively dominant than him in Europe, which is why the Dutchman should be in line to start against Manchester United.

Davies is not the only player from Sunday’s starting XI who should be ditched from the team after the Aston Villa game, though, as Djed Spence must also be binned for the final.

Why Djed Spence should not start the Europa League final

The English defender lined up at left-back against Palace and did not cover himself in glory for either of the goals with his positioning on that side of the pitch, whilst he also gave the ball away 12 times and only completed 76% of his attempted passes.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Football.london handed him a player rating of just 3/10 and wrote that he was ‘all over the place’ and that Palace took ‘advantage’ of his poor positional play throughout the match, despite winning eight of his ten duels.

It is not the first time that his positioning has been questioned. When playing in his more natural right-back berth, Football FanCast suggested that he should have been dropped after the 5-1 defeat to Liverpool because he was allowed his market to get in behind on at least three occasions, once leading to a goal, on that day.

Ange Postecoglou, therefore, should not select Spence at left-back for the Europa League final because his unreliable positioning could cost them big time against the Red Devils.

Spurs will not want to gift chances away, as they did against Liverpool and Palace, with Spence at full-back because his positioning lets the United wingers in too many times down the flanks, which is why he should be dropped.

Tottenham star Djed Spence

Destiny Udogie, meanwhile, has averaged 3.6 tackles and interceptions per game and won 66% of his duels in the Europa League, whilst also offering a naturally left-footed option to progress the ball in possession down that side.

Not another Mourinho: Levy makes "genius" coach Spurs' top target

Even if Tottenham triumph in the Europa League, most expect Ange Postecoglou to be sacked, so doest Daniel Levy have a “genius” coach top of his list?

2 ByBen Gray May 10, 2025

It is now down to Postecoglou to take Spence out of the XI, whether that is for Villa next week or after the clash with the Villans, in order to play Udogie at left-back in the Europa League final.

Fabrizio Romano says Arsenal "really" want £50m player, talks already held

Fabrizio Romano says Arsenal are extremely keen on signing a £50 million player, following other reliable reports that talks have already been held with his representatives ahead of the summer transfer window.

Arsenal set for summer rebuild under Andrea Berta

The season is by no means over for Mikel Arteta and co, who have a golden opportunity to make history and win the club’s first ever Champions League title after sensationally knocking out Real Madrid in the quarter-finals.

Their new Ian Wright: Arsenal want to sign "one of the best CFs in Europe"

Arsenal are looking at signing a striker who could be their next Ian Wright in north London.

ByJack Salveson Holmes Apr 22, 2025

Ligue 1 champions PSG await the Gunners in a mouthwatering semi-final clash, and it is truly a tie which will make or break Arsenal’s campaign.

However, another hot topic at the Emirates Stadium right now is new sporting director Andrea Berta’s looming summer rebuild ahead of next season. There are suggestions that Arsenal are looking to strengthen all areas of the squad, including between the sticks, in defence, midfield and further forward.

£300 million could even be spent doing so, according to GiveMeSport, amid Berta’s “insatiable” desire to build winning teams.

“Anyone who knows football knows Andrea is an impressive figure,” said co-chairman Josh Kroenke after Berta’s appointment.

“He has vast knowledge of the game, a great track record, a strong network and an insatiable desire to build winning teams. Andrea will be a great addition to our club. He understands our values and what we stand for, and we have no doubt he will help us push on and take the next steps in our bid to win major trophies.

“We undertook a thorough recruitment process, and we were hugely impressed with the level of all the other candidates, but it was Andrea’s experience and the success he has enjoyed that stood out.”

Defensively, it is believed Bournemouth starlet Dean Huijsen is emerging as a top target for Berta.

The reliable David Ornstein recently reported that Arsenal have held talks with Huijsen’s representatives, alongside the likes of Chelsea, Newcastle and Tottenham, with elite clubs taking note of the Spaniard’s £50 million release clause.

Arsenal "really" interested in signing Dean Huijsen

Following this development, another credible and trusted media source in Romano has shared another update on Berta’s pursuit of the former Juventus defender.

Bournemouth defender Dean Huijsen

He reports to GiveMeSport that Arsenal are “really” interested in signing Huijsen this summer after his excellent debut campaign in the Premier League, but the competition remains fierce.

“From what I’m hearing, Arsenal are also interested. Newcastle dream of him, but I think for Newcastle, it is going to be very difficult to get the deal done now with Chelsea, Liverpool, and Arsenal. These three clubs are really interested, so I think he’s going to stay in the Premier League.”

Huijsen recently expressed his excitement over being linked with a move to Real Madrid, but right now, it is unclear whether Los Blancos view the “sensational” centre-back as a priority target.

As well as Meslier: Farke must ruthlessly drop Leeds star with 50% passing

Leeds United are back in action in the Championship once again as they prepare to take on Luton Town at Kenilworth Road in the early kick-off this afternoon.

The Whites are looking to bounce back from successive 2-2 draws against Swansea and Queens Park Rangers either side of the international break.

Daniel Farke has already confirmed that there will be one change to his starting line-up for this clash with the Hatters, as Illan Meslier will be dropped to the bench in favour of Karl Darlow.

Why Daniel Farke is right to drop Illan Meslier

The German head coach looks to be making the sensible decision to take the French stopper out of the firing line, after he fumbled a cross for Swansea’s first goal last weekend.

Meslier has now made three errors that have directly led to goals for the opposition in the Championship this season, with the other two coming in away games against Sunderland and Hull.

The left-footed dud has also conceded 2.73 more goals than the average goalkeeper would be expected to based on the xG of the shots against him this term, which shows that he has underperformed as a shot-stopper whilst also being error-prone.

This is why Farke is right to drop him from the side to give Darlow, who has not made a single appearance in the league this season, a chance to shine between the sticks.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

However, Meslier is not the only player who should be taken out of the team, as the former Norwich City head coach must also ruthlessly ditch Dan James.

Why Dan James should be dropped

The Wales international should be removed from the XI as well as the French flop after his disappointing performance against his former club last weekend.

James started on the right side of the attack at Elland Road for the 2-2 draw with the Swans and was not directly involved in either of the two goals that Leeds scored, as Wilfried Gnonto and Brenden Aaronson got on the scoresheet.

As you can see in the table above, the former Manchester United man endured a torrid time against Swansea, completing just 50% of his passes and failing to make a significant impact at the top end of the pitch.

The £50k-per-week star has now gone four matches without a goal or an assist, and seven games without a goal, in the Championship, which is why Farke must ruthlessly take him out of the XI for this clash with Luton, given the other options he has at his disposal.

Gnonto scored one minute after coming on for James and the Italy U21 international, who has racked up six goals and five assists in the league, should be brought into the starting line-up this afternoon.

The Italian dynamo’s late goal against Swansea was more than the Welshman has contributed in his last four league outings, and Farke must, now, provide Gnonto with an opportunity to showcase his quality from the start.

Leeds thought they had "the new Van Dijk", but Farke sold him for just £2m

Leeds United may have prematurely sold a player who could follow in Virgil van Dijk’s footsteps.

1 ByEthan Lamb Apr 4, 2025

Therefore, Meslier is not the only player who should be dropped against the Hatters, and was not the only player who flopped against Swansea last time out.

Posers for India: The same old top three? Pant or Karthik, or both?

India have adopted a refreshingly positive approach in T20Is of late, but a few wrinkles still remain to be ironed out

Karthik Krishnaswamy25-Aug-2022Pakistan, Dubai. Just under a year ago, this combination of opponent and venue tripped India up at the men’s T20 World Cup. That defeat began India’s slide towards an early exit from the tournament, and left them needing to rethink their approach to T20Is.On Sunday, an India side managed by a different coaching group and led by a different captain will meet Pakistan once again in Dubai. The team won’t be too different to the one that featured in last year’s meeting, but it’s been playing a different style of T20 over the last few months.Consider their phase-wise scoring rates. Considering only matches in which they have batted first – and haven’t had a target dictating their approach – it’s amply clear that India have been scoring significantly quicker in every phase than they used to.

So far, the new approach has had a significant impact on India’s results. They were an excellent chasing side even during the Ravi Shastri-Virat Kohli regime, winning seven out of eight matches while batting second from the start of 2020 until the end of the 2021 World Cup, and their win-loss ratio while chasing has remained exactly the same in the period since. While batting first, however, India’s results were distinctly mixed in the earlier period, with 15 matches bringing seven wins, six losses and two ties. So far in the Rahul Dravid-Rohit Sharma era, India have achieved far better results while batting first, winning 12 and losing just three games .Kohli, for his part, showed during the two T20Is he played in England in July that he was willing to buy into India’s new approach, stepping out to fast bowlers and going for his shots right from the start. He didn’t score too many runs, though, so he still needs to show he can bat in this new way and justify being selected over a multi-skilled player like Deepak Hooda or either of the wicketkeeper options in Rishabh Pant and Dinesh Karthik.Rahul, meanwhile, is the designated vice-captain in India’s Asia Cup squad, and on that basis should be an automatic selection, but he might come under a bit of pressure to perform too. During his absence from the side, India have opened with either Pant or Suryakumar Yadav alongside Rohit, and having either at the top of the order gives India a certain amount of tactical dynamism. Pant’s left-handedness and Suryakumar’s range of shots against spin could both dissuade oppositions from bowling restrictive left-arm spinners in the powerplay, for instance – Imad Wasim and Mitchell Santner played key roles in India’s defeats in their first two matches of the 2021 World Cup.Related

It will, therefore, be interesting to see if Rahul can adapt his game – or even just be prepared to unleash his wide range of shots earlier than he typically does – and keep himself at the front of the openers’ queue.Pant or Karthik? Or both?
If Rohit, Rahul and Kohli occupy the top three spots, and if Suryakumar, Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja are automatic picks in the middle order, it leaves just one more batting slot open.Against South Africa earlier this year, in his first series since his recall to the India side on the basis of a sensational IPL season, Karthik showed why he’s among the best T20 finishers going around, scoring 71 runs in 36 balls in the death overs (17-20), while only being dismissed twice. His form has fallen away a little since then, though, and along the way India have also had to work around the hyper-specialised nature of his skills. While Karthik can be incredibly destructive in the last four or five overs, and against pace, he’s less assured while batting in the middle overs and against spin. To ensure that he bats in his preferred role, India have often promoted Jadeja – or Axar Patel – above Karthik when they have lost their fourth wicket earlier than ideal, but it’s an imperfect solution. It will probably be one or the other, not both, in the India XI•PTI Jadeja, who is likely to be India’s first-choice spin-bowling allrounder at the World Cup, has had the same issue as Karthik in recent years. In the last three IPL seasons, he has been excellent against pace – 495 runs at an average of 45.00 and a strike rate of 175.53 – while struggling against spin – 80 runs at 26.66 and . His international record since the start of 2020 is similar: a strike rate of 160.00 against pace and 96.42 against spin.As a result, it’s possible that Karthik might end up slipping out of India’s first-choice XI if there isn’t room in it for both him and Pant. This is especially so since Pant, after an indifferent series against South Africa, has found form in T20Is, particularly during the recent tour of the West Indies. Apart from his left-handedness – something India have in limited supply otherwise – he’s also more versatile than Karthik in being able to open or bat through the middle overs. All this, of course, is subject to change based on how India line up during the Asia Cup and how their batters perform their respective roles.Who’s the No. 8?

When West Indies and England reached the final of the T20 World Cup in 2016, they seemed to set in place a template for all teams to follow: uninhibited hitting from start to finish, facilitated by genuine batting depth. The final featured a smorgasbord of all-round talent: Ben Stokes, Moeen Ali, Chris Jordan and David Willey on one side; Dwayne Bravo, Andre Russell, Daren Sammy and Carlos Brathwaite on the other.Harshal Patel has been India’s most oft-used No. 8 since Rahul Dravid took over as coach•Getty ImagesThat template, however, hasn’t been an easy one for other teams to emulate, primarily because quality allrounders aren’t easy to find or manufacture. For many years, India’s tendency towards conservatism with the bat in white-ball cricket stemmed from a lack of bowlers with hitting ability. If India have changed their approach over recent months, they have done so without necessarily finding a failsafe solution to their issue of hitting depth, with Harshal Patel bringing decent but not eye-catching returns (52 runs in eight innings at an average of 10.40 and a strike rate of 130.00) as their most oft-used No. 8 since Dravid took over as coach.A rib injury has kept Harshal out of the squad for the Asia Cup, which leaves R Ashwin as India’s most accomplished No. 8 option. Ashwin has come off his most productive IPL season with the bat, during which he turned Rajasthan Royals’ lack of depth into an opportunity to showcase his versatility and improved hitting range, and a pair of recent cameos against West Indies have suggested he could be a decent option in international cricket too. He’s not necessarily a hitter in the same way that Jordan or Santner or Romario Shepherd are, but India will have to live with the options they have. This might mean using Hardik in an anchor-ish role – which he played on multiple occasions during Gujarat Titans’ run to the IPL title this year – should they lose a handful of early wickets. But Hardik’s recent bowling form could give them another option too, should they wish to try it: leave out a specialist bowler, trust Hardik to bowl his full quota, and bring in Hooda as a batting allrounder, with his offspin allowing them to minimise the use of Jadeja against left-hand batters.

Don't forget Chris Harris at Eden Park in the 1992 World Cup

The 1992 World Cup semi-final could have had an entirely different hero

Karthik Krishnaswamy01-May-2020The scorecard of the 1992 World Cup semi-final between New Zealand and Pakistan would suggest Chris Harris had an ordinary match: 13 runs at No. 6, and figures of 1 for 72 in ten overs. He took the bulk of the punishment – 25 off 13 balls – from the eventual Player of the Match, Inzamam-ul-Haq, and was at the receiving end of the six and the four that Moin Khan hit, off successive balls, to seal victory for Pakistan.Don’t be fooled, though. Harris was a central figure for New Zealand, a man whose performance could – and perhaps should – have hauled them into their first World Cup final. In an alternate universe, Harris would be remembered for playing a similar role to Viv Richards in the 1975 final, effecting the run-outs that turned the match. In an alternate universe, Steve Bucknor, the square-leg umpire, would have raised his finger when Harris swooped from cover point like a bird of prey, picked up the ball, and flicked it underarm, all in the same motion, to hit the stumps direct at the striker’s end with Javed Miandad stretching to make his ground. Replays showed Miandad clearly short of his crease, even if there was only an inch in it. He had faced five balls at that stage, and scored one run. If he’d been given out, Pakistan would have been 86 for 3, needing a further 177 to win off 161 balls. As it happened, there was no way for Bucknor to give Miandad out based on what he saw from square leg in the hurly-burly of live action, with no recourse to slow-motion replays. Batsmen inevitably – and rightly – get the benefit of doubt in those situations.Miandad would go on to steer Pakistan to victory with a typically crafty 57 not out from 69 balls, shepherding the youthful Inzamam and Moin, constantly offering them advice from his end.Harris could have run Miandad out for 1. Harris did run Inzamam out for 67, when Miandad tapped the ball towards him at extra-cover and called for an unwise single. And Harris could have run Moin out too, in the closing stages, when the match was still alive.Harris had just kept Miandad to a single by quickly closing down a square drive at deep point. With Moin now on strike, John Wright, New Zealand’s stand-in captain, moved him to midwicket. With Pakistan needing 16 off 16 balls, New Zealand pushed their inner-ring fielders close to the bat, to crowd the new man and try to keep him on strike. There were three fielders in a tight ring saving one on the off side, but only one on the leg side. New Zealand put their best fielder there. When Moin flicked Danny Morrison’s next ball out of the blockhole, it was almost inevitable that Harris would appear in its path, springing diagonally to his right to effect a one-handed, single-denying pick-up, which segued into a flick-throw that hit the stumps direct. Once again, replays showed that the hurriedly backtracking Moin was narrowly but perceptibly short of his crease when the bails came off.As with the previous incident, it was impossible for the square-leg umpire to give the batsman out. The evidence of the replays was clear enough, though, and it feels unfair that the multitude of camera angles that now bring a nearly 360-degree view of the field to millions of viewers, and the slow-motion replays that allow them to dissect the action with unprecedented precision, aren’t available to the match officials.Run-outs and stumpings are, by definition, binary: a line divides out from not out. Unlike lbw, there is no subjectivity involved with line calls, and there should be no reason why cricket, at the top level at least, should not employ video umpires to judge them. These decisions can change matches and tournaments, and change the way we remember them. In years to come, you’ll associate this World Cup with the image of a flying Jonty Rhodes running Inzamam out at the Gabba. Just make sure you don’t forget Chris Harris at Eden Park.Postscript: Video umpires came into effect by the end of the year, and the first Test of India’s 1992-93 tour of South Africa, in Durban, was the first international match to feature the third umpire. Cyril Mitchley was the first on-field umpire to send a run-out appeal “upstairs”, where Karl Liebenburg made the historic decision to give Sachin Tendulkar out.

Jhoan Duran's First Entrance to Close Out PhilIies Game Was Absolutely Electric

New Phillies reliever Jhoan Duran was called upon to close out his first game with his new club against the Detroit Tigers on Friday night, and his first entrance was absolutely electric.

Duran, nicknamed the Durantula, was known during his time with the Minnesota Twins to emerge from the bullpen to intense music, a light show, and the home crowd waving their cellphone lights. That routine won't be changing now that he's in Philadelphia, as Citizens Bank Park gave him the same treatment.

Here's a look at the entrance:

With the Phillies holding onto a 5-4 lead, Duran needed only four pitches to get the job done, forcing a groundout, a foul-out, and a lineout to secure the victory.

It's been a whirlwind couple of days for Duran, who was heartbroken to be dumped by Minnesota. But, after being able to get his No. 59 jersey from his new manager Rob Thomson and securing his first save for the National League East-leading Phillies, he's surely already starting to feel right at home.

Premier League club owner denies betting allegations after claims of secret £600m betting syndicate emerge

Brighton owner Tony Bloom says it is "entirely false" that he placed bets on his team's matches since he took over the club. Reports emerged that the British billionaire was the anonymous gambler behind winnings of £52 million ($70m), which allegedly included bets on the Seagulls. Now, in a statement on behalf of Bloom, the Premier League club has responded to these "misleading" claims.

'Secret £600m betting syndicate'

Earlier this week, Bloom was accused of running a 'secret £600 million ($800m) betting syndicate' and that some of the accounts used allegedly belonged to a former chief of staff of Reform UK MP Nigel Farage. Moreover, claimed that Bloom is the professional gambler known as "John Doe", who is referred to in a legal case in the United States where investigators are trying to unmask an anonymous gambler on a lucrative hot streak. The Football Association prevents club owners from placing bets on matches or competitions involving their own team. Despite that, Bloom is one of several owners allowed to continue gambling on other tournaments and games as he was included in a 2014 policy permitting such an act. Now, the 55-year-old, who is a professional gambler and runs a £600m-valued ($800m) London-based sports betting consultancy called Starlizard, has tried to set the record straight.

AdvertisementGetty Images Sport'Inaccurate and misleading report'

A statement issued by Brighton on Bloom's behalf states that he has never placed bets on the Seagulls since taking over the club in 2009. He described these allegations as "inaccurate and misleading" and said that lawyers have made contact with The Guardian about their story.

A statement on the club's website reads: "Following an inaccurate and misleading report in The Guardian earlier this evening, I can categorically assure our supporters that I have not placed bets on any Brighton & Hove Albion matches since becoming the owner of the club in 2009. In 2014, in addition to new rules on betting, The FA introduced a policy with quite onerous provisions for owners of football clubs with interests in betting. These provisions allow certain football club owners, including me, to continue to bet on football under strict conditions. In particular, the policy prevents me from betting on any match or competition that Brighton & Hove Albion is involved in. Since 2014, I have always fully complied with these conditions, and all of my bets on football are audited by one of the world’s leading accounting firms on an annual basis to ensure full compliance with The FA’s policy. Lawyers acting on my behalf have this evening directly contacted The Guardian to make my position on this entirely false allegation very clear. Separately, our club is in direct contact with both The Football Association and The Premier League regarding this matter."

The rise of Tony Bloom

To many, Bloom is best known as Brighton's owner, along with being a minority shareholder in Belgian top-flight team Union SG. He is also a minority owner of the Australian team Melbourne Victory and Scottish Premiership side Hearts. For those less accustomed to the Brighton-born businessman, Bloom started out at an accountancy firm, before becoming an options trader, and then he got into gambling professionally. Nicknamed 'The Lizard' for his poker-playing prowess, Bloom launched Starlizard in 2006, with their modus operandi focusing on using data to analyse and predict the outcome of sporting events. The success of that enterprise has allowed him to venture into racehorse ownership and charitable foundations, as well as taking Brighton from League One to the Premier League. This comes a matter of decades after the club nearly went out of existence in the late 1990s. Since then, they have played in the Europa League as well for the first time in their history.

Aside from off-field matters such as this, Bloom, who is a boyhood Brighton fan, will be keeping a watchful eye on his team's Premier League clash with West Ham on Sunday. The Seagulls sit tenth in the table whereas the Hammers are third from bottom. A win could see the Albion jump into the top five if results go their way.

Gerard Pique vs Shakira: Inside the Barcelona star's extremely messy break-up

Not since David and Victoria Beckham began their relationship in the late 1990s had there been a football couple as high profile as Gerard Pique and Shakira when they got together in 2010. Defender Pique was a key cog in Pep Guardiola's all-conquering Barcelona side of the late noughties and early 2010s, while Shakira had been a global pop sensation since the release of hit single 'Hips Don't Lie' in 2005. This was the kind of story the tabloids thrive off – and even more so when it goes badly wrong.

After crossing paths on a music video shoot ahead of the 2010 World Cup, their relationship would span more than a decade. Despite both living their lives in the intense glare of the spotlight and the added scrutiny of being a celebrity couple, the pair seemed to be the picture of happiness – welcoming two sons in 2013 and 2015, regularly appearing together at events and making some very public displays of affection.

However, things would go seriously awry in the summer of 2022 as they suddenly split against the backdrop of cheating allegations levelled against the now-former footballer, in what became an increasingly messy separation.

From football's modern-day power couple to 'betrayal', diss tracks and social media point scoring, this is the story of the breakdown of Pique and Shakira's picture-book relationship…

AFPMusical meeting

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Pique and Shakira's respective careers were the reason for their paths crossing in 2010, as they met on the set of a music video shoot. Rather bizarrely, Shakira – who is Colombian – had been chosen to co-write and sing the official song of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, 'Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)'.

Pique was among a clutch of prominent players to feature in the music video, and he met Shakira on set in June 2010 shortly before the tournament began. The footballer happens to be 10 years the singer's junior to the day, with both born on February 2.

"I wasn't a soccer fan, so I didn't know who he was," Shakira told in a 2020 interview. "When I saw the video, I was like, 'Hmm, that one's kind of cute'. And then someone decided to introduce us." From there, their relationship blossomed.

The couple did not initially make their relationship public, but that changed in March 2011 when both Pique and Shakira posted a photo of themselves embracing on Twitter (now X) and Facebook, alongside the caption "I present to you my sun".

It was reported that they had gone public at the request of legendary former Barcelona boss Guardiola, as the manager was growing concerned about the media scrutiny that his player's secretive encounters with the singer was generating and even believed the defender's on-pitch form had been affected.

Pique had paparazzi camped outside his home and they would follow him to the club's training ground, with tabloids and gossip magazines offering up a price of €150,000 for photos of the pair together.

Pique and Shakira would be seen in public with each other increasingly often, and he even joined her on stage during the Barcelona leg of her 'The Sun Comes Out' world tour in May 2011. The couple shared a kiss to send the crowd into frenzy.

Shakira would attend the Ballon d'Or awards ceremony with Pique in early 2012, and later that year the couple announced that they were expecting their first child together, with Milan Pique born in January 2013. They then confirmed their latest pregnancy in August 2014 and the couple's second son would follow in January 2015 when Sasha was born, seven days after his brother's birthday.

In 2020, Shakira explained why she didn't want to marry Pique, despite them seemingly being very happy together. "To tell you the truth, marriage scares the sh*t out of me," she said in her interview with . "I don't want him to see me as the wife. I'd rather him see me as his girlfriend. His lover, his girlfriend. It's like a little forbidden fruit, you know?

"I wanna keep him on his toes. I want him to think that anything's possible depending on behaviour."
