Worse than Odobert: Frank must drop Spurs dud who only completed 5 passes

Tottenham Hotspur failed to return from the international break in style as they were beaten 2-1 by Aston Villa in North London in the Premier League on Sunday.

The Lilywhites did, though, make the perfect start to the match when central midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur fired in the opener in the fifth minute.

Unfortunately, stunning strikes from both Morgan Rogers and Emiliano Buendia, who both fired the ball into the back of the net from the edge of the box, meant that the away side travelled away from London with all three points.

Thomas Frank will be disappointed with the time and space that both players had to get their shots away on the edge of the box, as Spurs players failed to close them down on both occasions from range.

However, the former Brentford head coach should also be disappointed with how his side played in possession, as they failed to pose a consistent threat at the top end of the pitch.

One of the players who failed to produce an impressive performance for the Lilywhites in the final third was former Burnley attacker Wilson Odobert on the left wing.

What Wilson Odobert needs to do to kickstart his Spurs career

The £40k-per-week starlet has so many interesting qualities that suggest that he has the potential to be a star. He’s dynamic, he has great speed, he can take players on in one-on-one situations, he has a terrific first touch.

However, and this is the crucial bit, the end product is not quite there for him yet. Per Sofasore, Odobert completed three of his four attempted dribbles, which is great, but he only created one chance in 79 minutes on the pitch.

The France U21 international was unable to turn his completed dribbles into dangerous situations for Spurs in the final third, as evidenced by his statistics.

As you can see in the table above, Odobert missed the only ‘big chance’ that came his way and only created one chance for this team, which shows that the forward did not do enough with the opportunities that he created for himself by dribbling past defenders.

The next step for him, therefore, to kickstart his Spurs career is to improve his consistency in his end product when he gets into good positions around the opposition’s box to ensure that when he does get into those areas, he makes the right decision, whether that is to shoot, pass, or cross.

Given the lack of natural quality out wide within the Spurs squad, for the left flank, it may make sense to stick with Odobert and be patient with him to hope that the experience of playing week-in-week-out helps him to build consistency in his play.

However, one of the other attackers in the starting XI was even worse than Odobert and should be brutally dropped from the team by Frank, Mathys Tel.

Why Mathys Tel should be dropped

The France U21 international was selected to lead the line ahead of Richarlison for this match, which seemed like a fair call given his recent form. Tel scored in the 2-1 win over Leeds United before the international break, whilst he also scored two goals and registered one assist in two matches for France’s U21s.

There is no doubt that he has quality. He has shown it in flashes, in that win over Leeds and for France, but he is still a young player who is learning and developing, which means that there will also be low moments for him.

Unfortunately, his performance against Aston Villa was one of those low moments, as the former Bayern Munich forward failed to make a positive impact in his hour on the pitch in North London.

He was even worse than Odobert as part of the front three that started the match, as he was unable to even create a chance for his side, whilst his compatriot at least created one ‘big chance’.

As you can see in the table above, the Frenchman was completely ineffective in and out of possession throughout the match, with no shots on target or chances created, and seven of his eight duels lost.

Tel did not provide a threat at the top end of the pitch, as either a scorer or a creator, and he was far too easy to play against for the likes of Ezri Konsa and Pau Torres, who marked him out of the game with relative ease.

The one chance that the 20-year-old star did have to run at the Villa defence, he turned down several opportunities to set up Mohammed Kudus or Rodrigo Bentancur to his right to take Konsa on and was easily stopped by the England international. He had plenty of time to make up his mind and play a pass across, but took too long and did not provide quality in his one-on-one duel with the defender.

Given that Richarlison is Tottenham’s top scorer in the Premier League this season, with three goals to his name, it feels like the right time to drop Tel from the starting line-up after an underwhelming display against the Villans.

Tel, as aforementioned, has quality and can be impactful at his best, but Frank’s job is to ensure that he can provide that quality consistently for Spurs, as that is not the case at the moment.

Unfortunately for Tel, though, Richarlison and Randal Kolo Muani are both waiting in the wings to take the number nine position, which means that he cannot afford to have poor performances like this one, hence why the manager must ruthlessly ditch him from the team.

Whereas, with Odobert, there is not a natural and top-quality left-wing option who can be dropped into the side next time out, which is why he may keep his place for now.

Not Wirtz: Liverpool star is in danger of becoming the new Naby Keita

Liverpool slipped to back-to-back defeats in the Premier League for the first time under Arne Slot on Saturday when they lost 2-1 to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

A last-gasp finish from Willian Estevao secured all three points for the home side in a game that they deserved to win with their front-foot approach.

More and more questions will be asked of the club’s recruitment work during the summer transfer window, as Florian Wirtz came on at half-time and failed to turn the game in Liverpool’s failure.

The Germany international arrived at Anfield from Bayer Leverkusen in a £115m deal in the summer, but he is still searching for his first goal contribution in the Premier League.

Wirtz lost six of his eight duels and created one chance in 45 minutes against Chelsea, per Sofascore, which shows that he struggled off the ball and did not add much to the team in possession.

Given that he came in from the Bundesliga for a gigantic transfer fee, there may be some comparisons drawn to the signing of Naby Keita from RB Leipzig, but that may not be fair.

Why Florian Wirtz is not the next Naby Keita

The Reds paid £52.75m to sign the central midfielder, who officially joined the club in 2018, from Leipzig, and he failed to live up to his price tag.

In five seasons at Anfield, Keita produced just 11 goals and seven assists in 129 appearances in all competitions, per Transfermarkt, which shows that he did not provide consistent quality at the top end of the pitch.

He had scored 17 goals and provided 15 assists in 71 matches for Leipzig in Germany, which means that he was unable to translate his form from his previous club over to his time with Liverpool.

Whilst Wirtz has not had the goals and assists that he would have wanted by this point, the German star’s underlying numbers suggest that he is not on course to be the next Bundesliga flop, like Keita was.

The 22-year-old attacking midfielder is doing the right things at the top end of the pitch, but needs something to go his way to start racking up goals and assists on a regular basis.

As you can see in the table above, Wirtz ranks highly among his positional peers for input, with chances created, xA, and xG on target, but the output, goals and assists, is not quite there yet.

If he continues to take high-quality shots and create chances for his teammates on a regular basis, the goals and assists will follow and he will not be deemed to be the next Keita at Anfield.

This is why Wirtz, who assisted Hugo Ekitike on his debut in the Community Shield, is not going to be the next Keita, because he is on the right path to becoming a success at Anfield.

However, there is another summer signing for Liverpool from the Bundesliga who may be in danger of becoming the next version of the Guinea international after a rough start to life on Merseyside.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Liverpool splashed out £29.5m to sign Netherlands international Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer in an attempt to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold, who departed on a free transfer to sign for Real Madrid.

Unfortunately, the former Manchester City and Celtic full-back has had a difficult time of things since his return to English football, and is now in danger of becoming the new Keita.

Why Jeremie Frimpong may be the next Naby Keita

As aforementioned, the former Leipzig midfielder was a flop from the Bundesliga at Anfield as he failed to translate his attacking form in Germany over to the Premier League with the Reds.

Frimpong delivered 30 goals and 44 assists in 190 appearances in all competitions for Leverkusen during his time with the Bundesliga side, playing as a wing-back more often than not.

His output in the final third led the official Bundesliga YouTube channel to question whether or not the Dutch dynamo was the best attacking full-back in the world earlier this year.

Slot, however, does not play with traditional wing-backs, and Frimpong has found the transition back to playing as a regular right-back, which is the role he played for Celtic earlier in his career, a difficult one.

The 24-year-old star has found himself third in the pecking order at right-back at this moment in time, as he was an unused substitute in the defeat to Chelsea that saw Connor Bradley start the match and Dominik Szoboszlai end the game at right-back.

Frimpong, who was described as a “breathtaking” talent by U23 scout Antonio Mango, has only started one match in the Premier League so far this season, and has been an unused substitute on two occasions.

As you can see in the table above, the Dutchman has struggled on and off the ball in the top-flight so far this season, losing the majority of his physical duels whilst also failing to create a single chance for his teammates in three appearances.

The former Man City academy graduate was given an opportunity to start on the right wing against Galatasaray in the Champions League, but he ended the game with no goals, no assists, and seven out of nine duels lost, per Sofascore.

These statistics, in the Champions League and the Premier League, show that Frimpong has struggled with a new role and the increased physicality of English football, which is why he is in danger of becoming the next Keita.

Forget Beto & Barry: Moyes must unleash "dynamite" Everton star in new role

Despite Liverpool sitting pretty at the top of the Premier League table heading into the Merseyside derby, Everton would have felt some comfort in the fact that Arne Slot’s Reds have conceded several goals, even amid their table-topping status.

Indeed, the early pace-setters had managed to leak four strikes in the league heading into this crunch contest, and they would give up yet another clean sheet against their arch rivals after falling victim to an Idrissa Gueye stunner.

Yet, while Everton did find a way back into the contest courtesy of their experienced midfielder, the Everton attack looked rather sheepish throughout at Anfield, with Beto only given one half before being handed his marching orders by David Moyes.

Everton's struggles in attack

Beto looked to have turned a corner donning Everton blue after a goal-shy start to life in Merseyside.

Indeed, when Moyes was reintroduced to the helm last season, the Portuguese attacker suddenly reclaimed his shooting boots, with the lofty 6-foot-4 centre-forward managing to bag seven of his eight Premier League goals last season under the Scotsman’s new reign.

However, this season so far, Beto finds himself on just the solitary effort, with the ex-Udinese attacker only managing to register two accurate passes at Anfield as Virgil Van Dijk dealt with the number nine with ease.

Moving away from Beto, Moyes isn’t exactly spoiled for choice, with lots of hope in the air that Thierno Barry will come good eventually, but with a recognition that it will take time for the 22-year-old to get up to speed to break his Toffees duck.

Everton’s frustrations in the striker department, away from Jack Grealish’s stylish darts forward, could, therefore, see Moyes look for some more inventive options away from having to solely depend on Beto and Barry, with this makeshift striker option not the most outrageous shout.

Moyes could now unleash "dynamite" ace in new role

Drastic times up top could call for drastic measures.

While Moyes could persist with Beto in the hope he recaptures his best form, he will also be aware that being proactive could take his side up a notch in the attacking department, with Iiman Ndiaye being drafted into his position, not the most out-of-the-ordinary shout, considering he is the Toffees’ top scorer in league action so far this season with two efforts.

This poacher-like finish against Brighton and Hove Albion shows off Ndiaye’s instinctive nature inside the box, and while Everton would miss the former Sheffield United attacker’s trickery down the flanks, Tyler Dibling could take over from the 25-year-old to push the number ten into the main striker spotlight.

This wouldn’t be an unusual position for Ndiaye to take up, either, when considering his career numbers by position, with the Senegal international managing to collect a blistering 12 goal contributions when leading the line for the Blades here, away from being deployed down either channel.

When adding in his numbers for Marseille, too, the “dynamite” 25-year-old – as he was once labelled by Sky Sports’ Jamie Redknapp – has a stunning back catalogue of ten goals and 12 assists from 49 games in this position, with Moyes now potentially tempted to shake things up and remove a lacklustre Beto to push the Toffees star-man into his spot instead.

Obviously, the worry would be that Ndiaye would find himself more removed from contests moving forward if he were to lead the line, as opposed to constantly being gifted the ball down the flank.

Yet, it’s a gamble that is worth exploring at this early stage of the season, with Ndiaye perhaps turning into even more of a terrifying beast unleashed into this fresh spot on the pitch.

'These guys are becoming unreliable' – Landon Donovan warns that Ricardo Pepi, Gio Reyna could be risking World Cup spots for USMNT amid latest injury setbacks

Former USMNT star Landon Donovan is questioning the reliability of forward Ricardo Pepi and attacking midfielder Gao Reyna following their recent injury setbacks. The USMNT's all-time joint leading goalscorer suggested that availability issues could threaten both player’s roles in the national team under coach Mauricio Pochettino.

  • Inconsistent player availability

Donovan is growing frustrated with Pepi and Reyna's injury records. The former LA Galaxy captain emphasized that reliability remains a fundamental requirement for international coaches building toward major tournaments.

“Ricardo Pepi is further along on the totem pole, in the pecking order than Gio is, but these guys are becoming – what I would say is, unreliable,” Donovan said on his Unfiltered Soccer Podcast. "Whether that's through performance or mostly through injury, or both in Gio’s case. If you’re a coach, you just need to know what you are getting and these guys are becoming unreliable. And so it’s hard for me to imagine them continuing to get called in – or in Ricardo’s case, starting games – if he’s not reliable in that way.”

  • Persistent injuries

Reyna's injury struggles have become a defining narrative of his young career, as he's missed 93 games. Pepi's situation, while less severe, has also raised concerns after the striker suffered a knee injury halfway through last season and has struggled to get back to full fitness since.

    National team depth

With Folarin Balogun working his way back as the USMNT's starting striker and players such as Josh Sargent, Haji Wright and Patrick Agyemang providing healthy competition, Pepi's position could be vulnerable despite his goalscoring credentials.

Suarez & Ekitike hybrid: Liverpool to launch £100m + bid for late signing

Look, Liverpool would love to win the Premier League again this season, and perhaps they will.

But FSG and Arne Slot are a match made in heaven, and it’s because steering away from the myopic target of single-season success is something that is expertly juggled with the wider vision of a sustained period of success over many years.

So while the likes of Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz and the rest have been signed because of their potential to lead the Reds toward trophy-winning exploits this year, the reasoning behind these bumper deals lies more with the grander scale of Slot’s plans.

Florian Wirtz in action for Liverpool

To put it another way, Liverpool have dotted the i’s and crossed the t’s when conducting their transfer business, ensuring everything is just so as they look to stay on top for many years to come.

Though many would consider Wirtz to be the cream of the summer crop, it’s Ekitike who has made a barnstorming start to life on Merseyside, rubber-stamping FSG’s decision to fork out big money for his signature.

Why Liverpool signed Hugo Ekitike

Liverpool signed Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt in a deal rising to £79m, and his early exploits in a Red shirt suggest that he could not only prove an upgrade on Nunez, but potentially a defining number nine for the Anfield side.

With two goals and an assist from two matches as a Liverpool player, Ekitike has a base from which to build on, and while there are many trials ahead of the 23-year-old, there’s a collective sense among the fanbase that Slot has welcomed a special player to his squad.

Against Bournemouth last Friday, he showcased not only an aptitude for scoring but a skill in the build-up, linking with his teammates and displaying his combative side too, winning five duels.

Whether Ekitike turns out to be a superstar signing like Mohamed Salah or, stretching further back, a talisman like Luis Suarez, remains to be seen, but he’s certainly started off with strong strides.

However, the Frenchman may yet face a fight for his place across the coming term.

Liverpool prepare late offer to sign Ekitike rival

According to reports in Spanish, Liverpool have not been deterred by the many obstacles in their pursuit of signing Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak, and they are ‘preparing a powerful new offer.’

It’s stated that Liverpool are ‘willing to take a giant step’, now ready to launch an offer of around €160m (£138m) to convince Newcastle.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Isak’s incendiary statement pertaining to his desire to leave St. James’ Park and his belief that promises have been broken by the Magpies hierarchy was met with a refusal on PIF’s part to grant the 25-year-old striker his wish.

Will he play in a Liverpool shirt in two weeks? Isak is desperate to sign for the Merseysiders, who have already seen an initial £110m approach rejected.

But encouragement is needed from the Toon camp, and none appears to be forthcoming.

Why Liverpool still want to sign Isak

It’s probably worth stressing that the final stretch of the summer transfer window is bound to be a frenetic thing, and Liverpool’s chances of landing Isak would increase dramatically if Newcastle pull off their deal for Brentford’s Yoane Wissa and then remain in the market for another striker.

Such a stance would denote their acceptance that Isak needs replacing and selling this month. Hardly a given, though.

Liverpool could do with a striker of Isak’s ilk, even with Ekitike hitting the ground running. The Sweden international’s goalscoring and athletic skill has seen him emerge as one of the finest marksmen around, with Newcastle legend Alan Shearer hailing his “world-class” talent (whether the pundit would sh such praise right now is another question).

Last season alone, Isak scored 27 goals and supplied six assists as United reclaimed a place in the Champions League and won the Carabao Cup, scoring against Liverpool at Wembley. If Liverpool succeed, there’s no doubt that he has the potential to rival the finest to do it at number nine on Merseyside.

Perhaps he’d be in the mould of Suarez, that all-consuming forward of old. What a player, his predatory instincts in the final third, his movements and his intelligence, all coming together to leave him hailed as one of the greatest strikers in Premier League history.

Suarez is, of course, one of the greats of the modern English game, almost single-handedly dragging Brendan Rodgers’ side to a maiden Premier League title in 2013/14, scoring 31 goals from only 33 matches in the top flight.

Remembered as one of the most unstoppable strikers of his generation, it’s curious to look at how Isak’s Premier League career compares to the Uruguayan’s, with some exciting facts to be noted.

No doubt, Suarez had more about him from a creative standpoint, but that’s hardly a fact that is to the £120k-per-week Isak’s detriment; the Scandinavian is one of the most complete strikers in the game, after all.

Considering that data-driven platform FBref have revealed through statistical analysis that Isak is comparable to Ekitike, Slot could find he has something of a hybrid on his hands, who has been hailed as a “machine” in front of goal by Fabrizio Romano.

The fact that Isak only trails Suarez’s goals-per-game rate at Liverpool across his three years as a Magpie is remarkable, and he’s also a mobile and creative player in the same vein as Liverpool’s new man in the middle, Ekitike.

FBref record that Isak, while principally a devastating goalscorer, ranks among the top 18% of strikers across Europe’s top five leagues for shot-creating actions, the top 12% for progressive passes, the top 7% for progressive carries and the top 9% for successful take-ons per 90.

He’s the real deal, all right, and while Ekitike is a thrilling talent, Liverpool would land someone more complete and more refined in Isak, capable of rivalling the France talent while also offering shades of Suarez in Slot’s high-flying squad.

They’ve also sold Kepa Arrizabalaga, Basir Humphreys, Noni Madueke, Marcus Bettinelli and Djordje Petrovic for a combined, estimated and reported total of around £96 million, with midfielder Mathis Amougou joining sister club Strasbourg for an additional undisclosed fee.

In terms of PSR, Chelsea are actually in line to make a profit right now and sailing comfortably under the limit, but they were recently sanctioned by UEFA for breaking their separate, more strict FFP rules.

The Blues need to sell players and balance out their squad, or face the prospect of not being able to register new players for the Champions League next season (Kaveh Solhekol).

With many players facing uncertain futures on the chopping block, Chelsea’s business for the rest of the window hinges on managing to get rid of certain squad members, but if they do, the west Londoners could still be on for a late-window flurry of incomings (Simon Phillips).

BlueCo remain keen on backing Enzo Maresca in the transfer market, and journalist Simon Phillips reports that the Italian is prioritising further attacking additions, due to Chelsea’s struggles playing against teams with a low block last season.

They face stiff competition from Arsenal, who are about to formally approach Palace over signing Eze after holding talks on the player’s side for weeks (Ben Jacobs), but Chelsea have now reached out to the 27-year-old’s camp as well.

“SPTC sources have heard that yesterday, Chelsea held new talks with the agents of Eberechi Eze of Crystal Palace,” said Phillips on Wednesday.

“However, there has been no club-to-club contact yet, but it looks like Chelsea are seeing if they can get the player buy-in first. Eze has a release clause believed to be around £65m. So if Chelsea get the player buy in, they can just trigger this.

“However, we know that it’s not just about the fee, it’s about how it can be paid, and other aspects. Chelsea may also look to bring that fee down by offering players as they do with most deals at the moment. Palace have a number of Chelsea players on their wish list, with Trevoh Chalobah being the main one.

“Let’s see if this goes any further but for now, just talks with Eze’s agent to establish if any deal is possible on that side.”

The England international netted 14 goals and 11 assists in all competitions last season, including Palace’s match-winning goal against Man City in the FA Cup final, and he’s been a star player for Palace since his move from QPR in 2020.

Half-centuries from Kashif Ali and Adam Hose led Worcestershire to a six-wicket win against Durham at the Seat Unique Riverside, their first win of the Vitality County Championship season.Ali (76 not out) and Hose (50) came together when the visitors were 65 for three and combined for a partnership worth 129, which took the game away from the hosts, who will be left scratching their heads after they were firmly in the ascendancy prior to the lunch break on day three.Worcestershire wrapped up the Durham second innings early on, with the Pears needing 231 to break their winning duck.Gareth Roderick batted positively early on and set a platform for Ali and Hose to guide the visitors to a vital win in the Division One relegation battle.Ali, a graduate of the South Asian Cricket Academy, has been a bright spark in a difficult season for Worcestershire and picked up his second half-century of the match to give his side that all-important first win of the season, while Hose, who has now got fifties in back-to-back matches, was also imperative to the win.For Durham it is a first home defeat in the County Championship since April 2022, but it drags them back towards the bottom end of the table, with the North East county now just 11 points ahead of today’s victors, who occupy the second relegation spot.Resuming on 148 for nine, the job for Bas De Leede and Ben Raine was to get as many runs as possible for the hosts, but they only added four to the total, as Ben Allison got De Leede for three when the Dutch international edged to second slip.Beginning their chase of 231, the Pears’ opening duo of Roderick and Jake Libby had the job of giving the visitors a good start with a difficult chase on their hands, as the pitch had given the bowlers plenty of assistance in the previous two days. While Roderick initially struggled against Raine, he started to go through the gears and punched one from Matthew Potts down the ground for four, which was followed by a glorious cover drive in Ben Stokes’ opening over.Despite the visitors making a good start to their chase, there was a sense that a wicket was coming as Libby survived an LBW appeal from Peter Siddle and Roderick nearly chopped a Stokes delivery onto his stumps.Durham then made the breakthrough with Stokes getting Roderick for 38, as he attempted a pull shot from a short ball but he feathered it through to Ollie Robinson behind the stumps.Wickets came like buses for Durham as a second arrived soon after as Libby went for 19 after he whipped a Siddle ball to mid-wicket to swing the momentum back to the hosts. Stokes then dismissed Rob Jones with an absolute beauty as he bowled him for one to leave Worcestershire 65 for three.First innings top scorer Ali and Hose then came together and saw the visitors through to lunch without further loss.Ali and Hose looked to consolidate after lunch and withstanded a lot of short-pitched bowling from the Durham attack. The pair then took 12 from a De Leede over to reach the 50 partnership, with Ali taking a liking to the all-rounder’s bowling. The number three then followed this up with a perfect cover drive for four from a Potts ball and then former Warwickshire man Hose played a great straight drive for four.Ali survived an LBW shout on 33 as Siddle was convinced he had his man, but the umpire thought there was an inside-edge, while an erratic over from Stokes went for 15 to only add to Durham’s woes.Hose continued to cash in on the England captain’s bowling and got back-to-back fours including a delightful cover drive.Ali then reached his half-century from 77 balls, with Hose reaching his milestone soon after from 86 balls.Raine finally broke the partnership when Hose was caught behind for 50, but the excellent Ali finished unbeaten on 76 and guided his side home.
