Arsenal would now consider selling Saliba to sign "strong" Real Madrid star

With Real Madrid setting their sights on William Saliba, Arsenal would now reportedly consider selling their star defender for the chance to sign a talented midfielder from the Spaniards in return.

Real Madrid eyeing Saliba move

After a disappointing season which could yet end without a trophy, it could be all change in the Real Madrid technical area this summer. Recent reports have indicated that Carlo Ancelotti is in negotiations to become the new manager of the Brazilian national team, which would likely see Xabi Alonso make his way to the Bernabeu ahead of the next campaign.

With Alonso possibly arriving, the Spaniards could yet be in for a busy summer transfer window too. Already, they’re in negotiations with Trent Alexander-Arnold over a free move upon the expiry of his current Liverpool contract at the end of the season and have now also reportedly set their sights on Saliba.

Recent reports in Spain have suggested that the Frenchman is on Alonso’s list of targets should he step into the Madrid technical area in the coming months. Following another season without a Premier League title and with Arsenal’s Champions League fate hanging in the balance, it remains to be seen whether Saliba will be able to turn down the lure of the Bernabeu.

If that does prove to be the case, then there’s no doubt that his departure will be a major blow. At the same time, however, it looks as though the Gunners will at least aim to get something in return.

Arsenal now considering Saliba sale on one condition

According to reports in Spain, Arsenal would now consider selling Saliba to Real Madrid if they got Aurelien Tchouameni in return. Mikel Arteta is reportedly a big fan of the Frenchman and may yet have the perfect chance to welcome him to North London.

What his arrival would also do is replace Thomas Partey, who is currently on course to leave Arsenal as a free agent upon the expiry of his current contract this summer.

Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni.

Filling that gap in the middle of the park should be among the Gunners’ top priorities, especially if they are to finally claim Premier League glory next season. And there’s no doubt that Tchouameni should be a top candidate to do exactly that.

Dubbed “strong” by Ancelotti earlier this season, Tchouemeni has matched and even outperformed Partey in a number of areas this season. At the sacrifice of Saliba, Arsenal could land an instant upgrade in midfield.

Whether it is worth losing one of the best centre-backs in European football to boost their midfield is a question that those at The Emirates must ponder, however.

Aston Villa want to sign £67m star who Man Utd are preparing an offer for

Aston Villa face a transfer fight with Manchester United to sign an “incredible” £67m star this summer, according to a new report.

Aston Villa chase new defender as Rogers gains admirers

The Villans strengthened their bid to finish in the top four over the weekend as they beat Nottingham Forest 2-1. Unai Emery will be keen to secure another season of Champions League football, as it will help their finances when it comes to the summer, and perhaps more importantly help them keep players such as Morgan Rogers.

The midfielder has been one of Villa’s best players this season, and that has earned him the reward of an international stage. It may also not be a surprise to see Rogers’ performances have “attracted admirers”, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein. No specific teams are mentioned, but it is clear that huge clubs have taken notice of the Villa midfielder.

On the incomings front, Villa are looking to make an offer to sign Ousmane Diomande from Sporting CP. Emery is keen on signing a new defender this summer, and Diomande has emerged on their radar, as Sporting are willing to sell as long as they receive a £50 million fee.

Aston Villa looking to beat Man Utd to Maignan deal

As well as looking to sign a new defender, Emery is also planning on strengthening his goalkeeper department, as according to journalist Niccolò Ceccarini, relayed by Sport Witness, Aston Villa are interested in signing AC Milan’s Mike Maignan, gathering information on the player and the chances of a deal.

AC Milan's MikeMaignanreacts

The report states that Villa have taken an interest in Maignan and could now make a concrete approach to sign the France international this summer, as he will enter the final 12 months of his contract at San Siro. Maignan has agreed a new contract with Milan in principle but has yet to sign the deal, so he could be moved on by the Italian team this summer, but would still cost around £67 million.

Villa, who already have Emi Martinez between the sticks, are not the only team from the Premier League to take a close look at the shot-stopper, as Chelsea are also interested, despite having several goalkeepers on their books.

Manchester United are also keen on Maignan and are said to be preparing an offer to bring the Frenchman to Old Trafford as a replacement for Andre Onana. Maignan, who has been hailed “incredible” by former Republic of Ireland manager Stephen Kenny, was asked about his future on Saturday after Milan’s 2-2 draw with Fiorentina.

The Frenchman was unwilling to talk about his contract situation at AC Milan: “As I said, I feel good at Milan; I give everything for the shirt every time I put it on, every day. At this moment, I tell the truth; I don’t want to talk about the contract; I want to talk about football.

“Milan deserves more; we want more. My personal case is not the most important thing at this moment.”

Everton agree deal to sign "excellent" 16 y/o ace with massive future

Everton are believed to have agreed a deal to sign a teenage player who could be a future star, according to a fresh transfer rumour.

Everton preparing for vital summer

David Moyes may have impressively steered the Blues away from the Premier League relegation zone, but there is still a clear need for reinforcements this summer, with only one win coming their way in their last eight matches, including Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at home to Manchester City.

Auxerre left-back Clement Akpa has been linked with Everton, who have been boosted by the news that he is likely to leave his current club at the end of this season. Wolves are also battling to sign him, however, so the Merseysiders face competition.

The Blues also reportedly remain confident of snapping up West Brom youngster Tom Fellows, who was a rumoured target throughout the summer transfer window. The Englishman has shone for the Baggies throughout this season, registering 13 assists in the Championship.

A new striker is needed at Everton, especially if Domini Calvert-Lewin moves on, with Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap named as an option to come in, as well as Brighton ace Evan Ferguson. While signing proven players is key this summer, planning for the future is also essential, and a young target has now emerged.

Everton agree deal to sign "excellent" young defender

According to a new report from Football Insider, Everton have “agreed a deal” to sign Hearts teenager John Dodds, with the 16-year-old an “extremely highly-rated” player.

They have had a “bid accepted” for the young centre-back, ahead of what is described in the report as a “transformational summer window”, which will excite Blues supporters.

Little is likely to be known about Dodds from the Everton fanbase, given his age and the fact that he is yet to represent Hearts at senior level.

He is clearly a special young talent with a high ceiling, though, so the fact that the Blues appear to have snapped him up should be considered a big positive.

Fewer touches than Pickford: Everton must axe 5/10 dud who made 4 passes

Everton conceded two late goals to Manchester City this afternoon to lose 2-0.

Dodds would clearly be a work in progress to begin with, spending time in the youth team to develop, but it may not be too long until he shows Moyes that he is worthy of a first-team place, with Hearts’ academy hailing him as “excellent” on X in the past.

Signing the brightest young British talent around should always be a priority for a club with the tradition and history of a club like Everton, so this is a major plus for them, as Moyes looks to slowly bring the glory days back and develop talented stars.

Not just Meslier: Leeds must axe "reliable" star who won't cut it in the PL

Leeds United have the opportunity to improve the first-team squad this summer, regardless of the division they find themselves in between now and the end of the season.

The Whites remain in a solid position to claim promotion from the Championship, currently occupying second place under Daniel Farke – with the German having the chance to win his third second-tier title.

However, the last few weeks have seen the side stutter towards the finish line, winning just one of the last five matches, surrendering their lead at the top of the table.

The last clash in the league saw Farke’s men draw 2-2 with Swansea City after a 97th-minute equaliser from Zan Vipotnik secured an unlikely point for the visitors.

One player in particular failed to deliver during the clash with the Welsh outfit, leading to questions over his long-term future at Elland Road, with many unhappy with his recent showings.

Illan Meslier’s future at Leeds United

Goalkeeper Illan Meslier has been Farke’s number-one option between the sticks this season but has often produced a moment of madness, costing the side all three points.

He made two separate errors against the Swans at the weekend, with his penalty save forgotten after his mistakes which handed the visitors a point in Yorkshire.

The Frenchman hasn’t been a stranger to a mistake this campaign, currently having a goals prevented xG of -2.7 – massively impacting the club’s chances of getting promoted.

Regardless of what division the club find themselves in next season, Farke must part ways with the 25-year-old if the side are to reach the next level – with his mistakes ultimately too costly.

However, the goalkeeper shouldn’t be the only player to depart the club this summer, with the manager brutally needing to part ways with one player who’s not at the level required for the top flight.

The Leeds star who wouldn’t cut it in the PL

Ahead of the summer, numerous players’ contracts are set to expire, with time running out for the hierarchy to secure an extension on players whose deals are coming to an end.

Junior Firpo is just one first-team member who could depart Elland Road this summer, with the Spaniard no closer to agreeing a new contract – with teams in Spain already registering interest in his services.

Sam Bryam is another player who could leave this window, with the club needing to avoid offering him a new deal – especially if they are to achieve promotion by the end of the year.

The 31-year-old, who’s been labelled “reliable” by one analyst, is currently in his second spell with the Whites, after rejoining on a free transfer in the summer of 2023.

The right-back has been a valuable squad member this campaign, making 30 appearances – but only 15 have come from a starting role, with the likes of Firpo and Jayden Bogle ahead of him.

However, the stats he’s produced are unfortunately not up to the level of a Premier League standard, with the 49ers needing higher quality players if they are to maintain their top-flight status if they secure promotion.

There’s no denying he’s been a tremendous servant for the club over the years, but ultimately he’s coming to the back end of his career with Farke needing to offload him and invest in new blood.

It will be a harsh decision to part ways with him given his extended time with the Whites, but unfortunately, the club need to do what is right if they are to be more competitive in the years ahead, whether that’s in the Championship or the Premier League.

Plunket Shield: Williamson makes low-key return, Nicholls piles on the runs

The Phillips brothers sparkle in the Plunket Shield while Abbas returns from injury in the tour game against the West Indians

Deivarayan Muthu29-Nov-2025In his first game for Northern Districts in a year, Williamson lasted only 27 balls across two innings. After scoring 17 in ND’s first innings, he was dismissed for just 3 in their second on the final day at Bay Oval, his home ground, against Auckland. Williamson fell to rookie left-arm spinner Rohit Gulati in both innings. In the first dig, Williamson stepped out and shanked a catch to mid-off before being bowled in the second. Williamson will look to shake off the red-ball rust when he lines up for New Zealand against West Indies in their WTC opener in Christchurch from December 2.Nicholls notches up twin tonsHenry Nicholls missed the cut for the upcoming three-match Test series at home against West Indies, which will kick off New Zealand’s new World Test Championship (WTC) cycle, and was not needed as a reserve batter during the preceding ODI series, but he reminded the selectors of his worth with twin centuries for Canterbury against Otago in Dunedin. This, after he had topped the one-day Ford Trophy charts in the first chunk of the season, with 306 runs in five innings.Nicholls, Canterbury’s captain, emulated his coach Peter Fulton in scoring centuries in each innings. Only four other Canterbury players have achieved the dual feat in the Plunket Shield. After making 111 off 157 balls in the first innings, Nicholls was even more fluent in the second, cracking an unbeaten 109 off 119 balls, which strengthened Canterbury’s push for victory.Canterbury also had hundreds from Ish Sodhi and No. 9 Sean Davey. Their unbroken 204-run partnership was the third-highest for the eighth wicket in the Plunket Shield. Sodhi celebrated his maiden first-class ton in dramatic fashion, pulling off the D-Generation X celebration, perhaps inspired by wrestling stars Shawn Michaels and Triple H.

The Phillips brothers sparkleAfter impressing in the first round on his return from injury, Glenn Phillips had another solid workout in the second, especially with the ball, bowling more than 25 overs in each innings for Otago against Canterbury. He came away with a match haul of four wickets, including that of New Zealand Test captain Tom Latham in both innings. Phillips found turn to scratch the outside edge of Latham and also snagged Canterbury’s first-round hero Matt Boyle. Legspinner Sodhi stopped Phillips six short of a hundred in Otago’s first innings and proceeded to dismiss him in their second innings, too, for 2.For Auckland, Glenn’s brother Dale followed up his first-innings 40 with his first hundred for his new side, having moved from Otago ahead of the season.Glenn Phillips had another good workout for Otago•AFP via Getty ImagesAbbas, Allen return to actionElsewhere in Lincoln, young batter Muhammad Abbas marked his return from a rib injury, which had forced him to miss five rounds of the Ford Trophy, with a half-century against the West Indians in a two-day tour game. This was Allen’s first competitive fixture since he suffered a foot injury during his MLC stint with San Francisco Unicorns.CD hunt down 361 after tactical declarationAfter captain Tom Bruce bravely declared with Central Districts 236 runs behind hosts Wellington in their first innings, his team successfully chased 361 on the final day to script a stunning win. Brad Schmulian and Curtis Heaphy, who was back from a hamstring injury, helmed the chase with a 292-run stand for the second wicket. Opener Heaphy departed for 132, but Schmulian remained unbeaten on 167 and got the job done for CD along with Dean Foxcroft.

Australia vs South Africa: Why Starc and Jansen should be in the firing line

Tactics board: Where the second semi-final between Australia and South Africa, in Kolkata, could be won or lost

Sidharth Monga14-Nov-20235:37

Finch on Australia’s champion mentality in World Cup knockouts

Australia are the second-quickest starters with the bat, and the second-most miserly starters with the ball. South Africa have been slow starters with the bat – even slower than Pakistan and Afghanistan – but explosive with the ball, taking more powerplay wickets than any other team. South Africa have recent form on their side, having beaten Australia in their last four encounters, including once in the group stages of this World Cup. Australia, though, have the momentum of having won seven matches on the trot, plus some knockout ghosts to remind South Africa of. These are some of the tactical moves to watch out for as they face off in Kolkata. What to do at the toss?
No secrets there. South Africa want to avoid chasing, and Australia want them to chase. Even when winning against Pakistan and Afghanistan when chasing, they huffed and puffed their way through. All their four recent wins against Australia have come batting first. There might be some respite for South Africa though. There is a forecast for some rain in the evening. If this forecast convinces Australia to chase or cuts short the duration of South Africa’s chase, it could mitigate South Africa’s chasing troubles.Related

Labuschagne vs Stoinis: Australia's big call for the World Cup semi-final

Still, expect both sides to risk the dew or the rain because the advantage to be gained by batting first is too big to ignore.Weighing up team combinations
Unlike India and New Zealand in the first semi-final, these teams have one selection doubt each. Australia have to choose between Marnus Labuschagne and Marcus Stoinis. Labuschagne brings more solidity to the middle after the explosive top three whereas Stoinis in theory brings both powerful hitting lower down the order and a sixth bowling option. Current form – and indeed sentiment – is with Labuschagne, especially with some solidity required in the middle overs, but expect Australia to play him only if they are confident in Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh helping out with the ball as their fifth bowler is Glenn Maxwell. Also, Labuschagne’s record against left-arm spin can go against him because he will have to face a lot of Keshav Maharaj in the middle.South Africa played Tabraiz Shamsi in their league game in Kolkata. Shamsi didn’t have a great game, but they did read the conditions well: there was enough in the pitch for him and other spinners. This will be a conditions-based toss-up between Shamsi and Gerald Coetzee, the latter bringing some hitting lower down the order.Put pressure on Starc
Mitchell Starc hasn’t had many chances to bowl with a moving ball this World Cup, which partly explains his economy rate of 6.55 and average of 43.9. It hasn’t swung or seamed much in Kolkata either. So, especially if they are chasing, South Africa might want to target Starc because we have seen that generally if you fall behind in a chase this tournament, there is no way back.Australia might go for Marnus Labuschagne over Marcus Stoinis as he brings more solidity to the middle•AFP/Getty ImagesMaxwell before Zampa?
In his last three matches against South Africa, Adam Zampa has averaged 63.25 and gone at 8.43 an over. Expect Australia to go to Maxwell before Zampa not least because Quinton de Kock hasn’t quite liked offspin of late. His strike rate against offspin this World Cup has been 78.37; his release shot against them, the reverse-sweep, has got him out twice in six attempts. The problem for South Africa is that Temba Bavuma has even worse numbers against offspin. If there does come a situation where de Kock is stuck against Maxwell, they will need Rassie van der Dussen and those following to compensate.Reverse-swing on the cards
South Africa’s plan has been to start steadily and keep constantly accelerating. They have been the most explosive side at the death. However, do remember that Pakistan found reverse in Kolkata. That means the square is dry. Getting the old ball going will be a must for Australia if they don’t take early wickets.South Africa will look for the same if they end up bowling first. So watch out for a lot of cross-seam bowling, and umpires stopping fielders from returning the ball on the bounce.Target Jansen
Marco Jansen has been one of the big reasons South Africa have been successful in this World Cup. Even when he is not swinging the ball, his height gives him a big advantage. However, there have been two games where he has gone for more than 90. Once when Kusal Mendis got stuck into him, and once when he started waywardly, possibly out of nerves, and then Rohit Sharma took advantage. The trends suggest that Jansen is a handful if he gets into his groove. Australia will likely want Head and Marsh to go after him and see if he cracks, while David Warner bats normally at the other end. The first ten overs of Australia’s innings promise to be delicious either way.Maharaj key in the middle
South Africa will hope that the quicks have got past the top three by the time they introduce Maharaj because Steven Smith and Labuschagne don’t quite prefer left-arm spin. Ravindra Jadeja got them both out in Chennai, and Mitchell Santner managed to shut them off in Dharamsala. Even Josh Inglis, who comes in after the pair, is a right-hand batter. In the last match between these two sides, Maharaj dismissed Maxwell and Labuschagne.

Maresca’s alleged discontent could stem from Chelsea’s lack of centre-back signings, which they’ve definitely paid for so far this season, with Trevoh Chalobah, Tosin Adarabioyo, Wesley Fofana and Levi Colwill all forced to miss Liverpool through injury or suspension.

Maresca publicly suggested that he wanted another centre-back at Chelsea before deadline day on September 1, but despite internal talks after Colwill’s ACL problem, and trying for Dean Huijsen in May, they couldn’t get one over the line.

Chelsea now want to sign a new defender as a priority for the January window instead, and some media sources report they could even bring in another striker despite completing deals for Liam Delap and Joao Pedro in the summer.

The latter is viewed more as a 10 than a number nine, while Delap is out injured and will take some time to get back up to speed once he returns from a hamstring problem — which has prompted Chelsea to consider another centre-forward (Simon Phillips).

Any new striker would likely be a cheap option, brought in on loan or a player who’s already owned by BlueCo (Simon Phillips), and you can make a case that Juventus star Dušan Vlahović could fall into the ‘bargain’ category.

Chelsea offered Dušan Vlahović as talks held with representatives

The Serbia international is out of contract at the end of this season, meaning Juve could be tempted into selling him for a cheap fee in January as opposed to losing Vlahovic for nothing next summer.

Vlahovic, who’s bagged four goals in eight appearances so far this season, is already planning for life after Turin, with his representatives speaking to a host of sides ahead of his looming exit.

That is according to TBR Football and journalist Graeme Bailey, who report that Chelsea have been offered Vlahovic as the Blues hold talks with his camp.

The 25-year-old, called a “real superstar” by members of the media during his Fiorentina days, earns a whopping £370,000-per-week at Juve, and any Chelsea terms near that amount would shatter their wage structure.

Unless Vlahovic takes a dramatic pay cut, Saudi looks like the best bet for him. That being said, Stamford Bridge could be an excellent move for Vlahovic’s career prospects.

His ability to score with both feet and dominate aerial duels would seriously complement Chelsea, offering a reliable focal point for Maresca’s attack. Additionally, Vlahovic’s top European experience shows he can handle pressure and deliver in big moments, having scored 11 goals across his Europa League and Champions League cameos since 2021/2022.

At Chelsea, he’d have the platform and service to flourish even more — feeding off Maresca’s plethora of creative wingers and midfielders to potentially devastating effect.

Big picture: World Test Champions’ toughest testThe variety of conditions Test cricket offers is evident from how the format’s world champions, South Africa, have not been able to even compete in their previous seven Tests in India, the country of their next challenge. They lost six of those Tests comprehensively, and were on their way in the seventh but for the rain.Even within India, South Africa have struggled in a variety of conditions. In 2015-16, they were outdone by a young side for whom the team management considered raging turners a necessity. Then, in 2019-20, against an established home team, South Africa were blanked by huge margins on good batting surfaces that had nothing for the home spinners, who averaged 27.18 compared to their fast bowlers’ 17.50.The world champions make this trip in 2025-26 not with any significant new faces in their attack but with more experience, and thus more equipped to compete during what has to be South Africa’s toughest tour. Keshav Maharaj was their lead spinner on the previous tour too. Simon Harmer toured in 2015-16. Senuran Muthusamy played two Tests in 2019-20. Kagiso Rabada remains the banker fast bowler.Related

South Africa will also hope that India, who suffered a shock loss against New Zealand last year and are still a team in transition, still haven’t nailed the method to win home Tests. They blanked West Indies earlier this season, but they weren’t entirely invulnerable.Still, South Africa will need nearly everything to go their way to win a Test on this tour, just like it did for New Zealand last year. While India are currently third on the WTC points table, having drawn 2-2 in England and beaten West Indies 2-0, South Africa have only just begun their title defence with a 1-1 draw in Pakistan last month.Form guideIndia: WWWDL

In the spotlight: Keshav Maharaj and Shubman GillKeshav Maharaj comes to India with experience of 60 Tests; he’s second only to Ravindra Jadeja among left-arm spinners in Test cricket. With India unlikely to offer square turners or assistance for traditional seam bowling, Maharaj will have to bear a heavy workload, and provide wickets and control.Starting September, India’s newest all-format star Shubman Gill has had no break. He got three days, including the travel day, between the T20 Asia Cup in the UAE and the first Test against West Indies in India. Then just four days to travel to Australia and switch to ODIs before going back to playing T20Is in three days. After that, a five-day break, which included travel from eastern Australia to eastern India to captain the team in an important series. Gill is young and fit, and must be itching to play as much as he can, but keep an eye on how well he readjusts to the longest format.Team news: Jurel and Pant both set to playAgainst West Indies, India got away with playing practically a ten-man side. Given India’s need for a seam-bowling allrounder, Nitish Kumar Reddy was understandably given games to develop his skills, but he hardly had a role to play in the series. Now, with their No. 1 Test wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant fit again, India have decided to keep Dhruv Jurel in the XI as a specialist batter and release Reddy to the India A side. The rest of the team should remain unchanged.India (probable): 1 Yashasvi Jaiswal, 2 KL Rahul, 3 B Sai Sudharsan, 4 Shubman Gill (capt), 5 Rishabh Pant (wk), 6 Dhruv Jurel, 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 Washington Sundar, 9 Kuldeep Yadav, 10 Jasprit Bumrah, 11 Mohammed SirajTemba Bavuma should replace Dewald Brevis in South Africa’s XI•Associated Press

South Africa should look to replicate the combination that won their previous Test, against Pakistan in Rawalpindi. The batting ability of their first-choice attack gives them depth without compromising the bowling. Marco Jansen should pip Wiaan Mulder to the XI because there’s unlikely to be assistance for traditional seam bowling. The returning captain Temba Bavuma should take Dewald Brevis’ spot.South Africa (probable): 1 Aiden Markram, 2 Ryan Rickelton, 3 Tristan Stubbs, 4 Tony de Zorzi, 5 Temba Bavuma (capt), 6 Kyle Verreynne (wk), 7 Senuran Muthusamy, 8 Simon Harmer, 9 Marco Jansen, 10 Keshav Maharaj, 11 Kagiso RabadaPitch and conditionsEarly indications suggest a good batting track at Eden Gardens, which could possibly bring reverse swing into the picture. There will be little grass on the pitch but it is not expected to be excessively dry or cracked either. A potentially tough task awaits the side that loses the toss.Stats and trivia Gill has won only one toss in seven Tests as captain. South Africa have not won the toss in their previous seven Tests in India. One of these unlucky runs will end on Friday. Kyle Verreynne is five short of becoming only the fifth South Africa wicketkeeper to reach 100 Test dismissals. Jadeja is just ten runs short of becoming only the fourth player in the world to achieve the double of 300 wickets and 4000 runs in Tests.
