Who is part of Thomas Tuchel's England coaching staff?

Thomas Tuchel was appointed as the new England manager last October following the resignation of Gareth Southgate after the nation lost in the final of the 2024 European Championship to Spain.

Southgate’s eight-year reign in charge of England saw them reach the semi-finals and quarter-finals of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups respectively, with their 2018 performance their best since 1990.

The Three Lions went even better at the Euros, reaching the final of Euro 2020 and 2024, although they lost to Italy and Spain on each occasion.

So close, yet so far for Southgate, and he left his post with his head held high. Now it is time for Tuchel to take England to the next level and win a major international competition for the first time since 1966.

10 wildcard players Thomas Tuchel could call up for England

The new era under the German begins in March, but could he spring a surprise in his first squad selection?

ByCharlie Smith Feb 13, 2025

The German manager has enjoyed plenty of success at club level. He led Borussia Dortmund to the German Cup in 2017 before winning two Ligue 1 titles with Paris Saint-Germain, whom he also led to their maiden Champions League final in 2020.

With Chelsea, the 51-year-old won the Champions League, defeating Manchester City in 2021, yet he was sacked just over a year later after some poor results.

His last club stint came with Bayern Munich, lasting 61 games before departing last summer, and now a new challenge awaits – one that is perhaps his biggest to date.

His first match in charge will be against Albania in the first qualifier for the 2026 World Cup, followed by a tie against Latvia just three days later. Winning both comfortably will be the expectation.

With a new manager comes a new backroom staff, with Tuchel appointing those who have worked alongside him in previous roles.

So who are among those joining Tuchel in the Three Lions dugout? We have taken a look into five members of Tuchel’s coaching staff ahead of this new era.

Anthony Barry Assistant coach

Anthony Barry

Anthony Barry was confirmed as Tuchel’s assistant last October, having developed a productive relationship with the 51-year-old in spells at Chelsea and Bayern Munich.

Making his breakthrough during three years as assistant manager at Wigan Athletic, Barry joined Chelsea in the summer of 2020, taking up the position of first-team coach at the Blues.

He had impressed Frank Lampard during coaching courses at St George’s Park and was retained by Tuchel upon his arrival at Stamford Bridge in January 2021.

Barry also worked under Roberto Martinez during his spells in charge of Belgium and Portugal before making the move to Bayern, where Tuchel was the head coach.

Having won the 2022/23 Bundesliga title together, Tuchel knows exactly what to expect from the Liverpool-born coach, who tends to specialise in set-pieces.

Henrique Hilario Goalkeeping coach

Henrique Hilario joined Chelsea back in 2006, going on to make a total of 39 appearances for the Blues during his playing career, although he was unable to usurp Petr Cech as No 1 goalkeeper.

He also won a single cap for Portugal along with winning the Champions League and a Premier League title with the Stamford Bridge side. Since retiring in 2014, Hilario moved into a coaching role at the club and remained their even since resigning last October.

Tuchel appointed the 49-year-old as his new goalkeeping coach following former coach Martyn Margetson stepping down in the wake of Southgate’s resignation.

Hilario was keen on splitting his commitments between Chelsea and the England setup, but the Premier League side were reluctant to do so. Therefore, he linked up with Tuchel on a full-time basis.

Who is Hilario? A look at England's new goalkeeping coach

Hilario is set to join Thomas Tuchel’s Three Lions setup after many years at Chelsea as a player and coach.

ByBarney Lane Dec 9, 2024 Nicolas Mayer Performance coach

Nicolas Mayer is another member of staff joining Tuchel at England from Bayern Munich, having served as the performance coach at the Bavarian giants.

The Frenchman worked with Tuchel at PSG, helping the club win various domestic honours while reaching their first Champions League final, losing to Bayern 1-0 in August 2020.

These two stints working for the 51-year-old ensures that Mayer is well-placed to help Tuchel turn England from nearly-men into winners of a major international competition during his time in charge of the country.

James Melbourne Analyst

Tuchel wanted to keep his backroom team relatively small compared to those at club level.

James Melbourne clearly impressed the England manager during their time together at Chelsea, leaving the Blues to take on a full-time role with the national team.

He joined Chelsea in 2005 from Prozone and was the longest-serving member at the club prior to his departure. Melbourne worked under 14 permanent bosses at Stamford Bridge, including the likes of José Mourinho, Avram Grant, Luiz Felipe Scolari, Carlo Ancelotti and Antonio Conte.

His role will include preparing and providing video and statistical analysis support to the senior England side, while also preparing detailed videos, information and reports on opponents.

Ashley Cole Coach

Ashley Cole was arguably one of the finest left-backs in Europe during his peak. Across spells at Arsenal and Chelsea, the defender won three Premier League titles, the Champions League and a staggering seven FA Cups.

For England, he won 107 caps and featured at three World Cups and two European Championships for his country.

Last September, Cole joined the FA as a full-time national coach, a role that he shared alongside his work at Birmingham City.

This new role allowed him to focus his work across the England men’s player pathway, with Cole supporting Lee Carsley as an assistant during his temporary spell in charge of the national team during the latter part of 2024.

Despite Joleon Lescott departing at the end of the year, Cole will remain part of Tuchel’s coaching setup at England and the former left-back has plenty to offer.

U.S. internationals Christian Pulisic and Yunus Musah started AC Milan's final match of the 2024-25 campaign on Saturday as the defeated Monza 2-0. Second-half goals from Matteo Gabbia and Joao Felix secured all three points, as Milan ended the season with a win and a points total of 63.

Pulisic played 86 minutes, while Musah was removed at halftime after a rather uneventful cameo for the Italian side.

Ahead of the match, a massive protest was staged by fans outside of the San Siro, while midway through the first half, the Milan ultras abandoned their section of the stadium, walking out of the match in protest of ownership.

Milan finished outside of a European placement spot, and will not feature in any UEFA competition next season.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Pulisic's 2024-25 campaign with Milan ended on an up note, with the American scoring 11 goals and recording nine assists in 33 regular season appearances. Across all competitions, he bagged 17 total goals while registering 10 assists, with the U.S. international setting a single-season scoring record at the club level.

Pulisic has opted out of playing for the USMNT in the Gold Cup.

Musah, meanwhile, appeared in 29 Serie A matches, recording two assists. Saturday marked his second-straight start for the club, but prior to the two-game stretch, had been reduced to a bench role for eight games – including five where he went as an unused substitute. Musah will not play for the U.S. in the Gold Cup, either.

BCB says TV umpire was correct following controversial ADRS decision

With the regular DRS unavailable, a pared-down system has been in use, triggering multiple flare-ups

Mohammad Isam15-Jan-2023The BCB has backed TV umpire Tanvir Ahmed after he was involved in a contentious lbw call during the BPL game between Comilla Victorians and Fortune Barishal on Saturday. After umpire Morshed Ali Khan had given Jaker Ali out lbw in the 14th over of the Comilla innings, the batter reviewed, only for Tanvir to uphold the on-field decision despite replays seeming to suggest the ball had pitched outside leg stump. The BCB has explained that part of the ball did pitch within the “pitching zone” that is in line with the stumps.BPL match officials use a technology called the Alternate Decision Review System (ADRS) instead of the standard DRS. On the eve of the tournament, BCB chief executive Nizamuddin Chowdhury said the board had not been able to secure the personnel from Hawkeye to run the DRS, even though the BCB has the technology available at the Shere Bangla National Stadium. To make decisions via the ADRS, the TV umpires have to go by a blue line for a pitching zone to depict the line of the stumps to make lbw decisions. They have also used zoomed-in camera angles to judge edges or whether the ball has hit bat or bad first. For picking up noise, they use stump mic audio provided by the broadcasters. It is far from a foolproof system, considered inferior to the DRS, and many players and coaches have already questioned its use during the BPL.The decision on Saturday left Jaker looking shocked while the TV commentator said at the time that he was “lost for words”. Comilla coach Mohammad Salahuddin expressed his frustration with the call during the post-match press conference, after which the BCB released its statement.”The point of pitching [pitching zone] of the ball is indicated with the help of a stump to stump pitch mat in the Alternative Decision Review System [ADRS] being used in the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League T20. In Appendix D1 of the tournament’s Match Playing Conditions, it is stated that a ball will be considered to have pitched ‘In-Line’ in the ADRS if ‘Any part of the ball was inside the Pitching Zone’.”In accordance with this interpretation of the related rule, the TV umpire upheld the LBW [image showing the point of pitching of the ball attached] decision by the on-field umpire against Comilla Victorians batsman Jaker Ali in Comilla’s match with Fortune Barishal at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdury Stadium in Chattogram today.”With regular DRS unavailable, third umpires have used the Alternative Decision Review System [ADRS] during BPL 2023•Bangladesh Cricket BoardSalahuddin said the tournament may be better off without the ADRS, *which earned him a fine of 50% of his match fees and three demerit points.”I think it is better not to have ADRS,” he said. “It is better to give what the [on-field] umpire gives. The ball pitched totally outside the leg stump… I think a couple of [questionable] decisions… one decision was bad in the first match, and today too.”Salahuddin said he didn’t want to make a stronger comment as he could be punished by the BCB. “I don’t know… their rules might include something new,” he said. “Perhaps there was a shadow [of the ball in line with the stumps]. I would have been happy if the [on-field] umpire had given the [final] decision.”At the moment I can’t really say anything. There is a lot of debate about it. I said at the beginning that one or two decisions will decide the game. What we see with the naked eye is not out, but the third umpire gives it out. Then we have nothing to do.”Do you want us to shout on the field? That will only lead to suspension. There is no use in protesting. There is no point in writing or protesting. Our hands and feet are tied, there is really nothing to do.”There have been couple of flashpoints during this season’s BPL with the use of the ADRS. First, Soumya Sarkar argued with the umpires after both the on-field and TV umpire on January 7. A second review by the umpires suggested that the lbw decision against him didn’t stand as the ball had hit his gloves. It was the same replay when the TV umpire had adjudged him out a few minutes earlier.Three days later, Anamul Haque argued with the umpires but to no avail when he didn’t agree with an lbw decision in a match against Rangpur Riders. He was given out lbw by the TV umpire but Anamul didn’t want to leave the field, and was later fined for the offence. The BCB has said that the regular DRS will only be available during the knockout phase of this season’s BPL.

Aston Villa now in advanced talks to complete £35m double deal for Emery

Aston Villa are now closing in on a £35m double deal to boost Unai Emery’s ranks ahead of the second part of the Premier League season as they look to qualify for the Champions League once more next season.

Aston Villa in European race

Though they fought back from 2-0 down to secure a 2-2 draw against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium in their most recent outing, Aston Villa still dropped down the Premier League over the weekend.

Wins for Bournemouth and Manchester City saw them slip to eighth, though they remain just two points outside the top four and are part of a gaggle of clubs looking to grab a spot in next season’s European competitions.

Aston Villa agree £6m deal to sign another new star; Unai Emery was key

The Villans have acted once again…

ByTom Cunningham Jan 18, 2025

As things stand, just five points separate Manchester City in third and Fulham in 10th as the sides challenge for what is likely to be eight European spots available, including five in the Champions League.

With teams so close, every point is vital and Aston Villa have already moved to strengthen their ranks this winter with the arrival of Donyell Malen from Borussia Dortmund, who has replaced Jaden Philogene in Unai Emery’s ranks after the latter completed a move to Ipswich Town.

Though there has been significant speculation around Jhon Duran once more, no deal seems likely this winter. The same cannot be said for Diego Carlos though, who, like Duran, was strongly linked with a move away from Villa Park in the summer but now seems set to exit six months later with a deal to join Fenerbahçe now in its final stages in a move set to net Villa in excess of €10m.

Meanwhile, Villa have lined up two more signings of their own in a bid to bolster their ranks in the wake of his exit.

Aston Villa close in on £35m deals

That is according to a report from The Boot Room, who claim that Aston Villa are closing in on the signings of Sevilla defender Loic Bade and Levante defender Andres Garcia in deals totaling £35m.

The Villans are “in advanced talks” to sign Bade in a deal worth “£30m including add-ons” as they look to plug the gap left by Carlos’ impending exit. The Frenchman has shot to prominence with Sevilla, helping them to European success and seeing his stock rise since.

Dubbed “fantastic” on the ball by members of the media, Bade has emerged as a target for Aston Villa and now a deal could be close after they failed to find a route to signing Oscar Mingueza.

Meanwhile, the Villans are set to sign Garcia from Levante in a separate deal worth £5m, and Villa are “hopeful of both transfers being completed before the weekend”, when they play host to West Ham.

The two deals will take Villa’s spending this month to close to £60m, having also shelled out just over £6m to sign Yasin Ozcan from Turkish side Kasimpasa, though he will not join up with Unai Emery’s side until the summer. Will it be enough to see them land a spot in the Champions League for next season?

Smriti Mandhana 79* sees India run down England to level series

Freya Kemp becomes youngest woman to make T20I fifty for England but total proves under par

Valkerie Baynes13-Sep-2022A glorious unbeaten half-century from Smriti Mandhana saw India to victory by eight wickets over England with 20 balls to spare in their second of three T20Is to level the series 1-1.If this evening was anything to go by, the damp and dreary onset of autumn has so far been restricted to either end of the country. Durham had offered a soggy opening to the series on Saturday as England eased to a nine-wicket win in conditions that weren’t to India’s liking. Then London was enveloped in steady rain for a good part of Tuesday. The midlands, however, were clinging on to summer as England’s innings progressed in bright evening sunshine at Derby’s Incora County Ground. That was arguably the most pleasant thing about it from the hosts’ perspective after they lurched from 16 for 3 to 54 for 5… until 17-year-old left-hander – or left-arm seamer to be more precise – Freya Kemp produced an innings-saving unbeaten half-century of her own. In the end, though it was the vastly more experienced Mandhana who countered Kemp’s effort with a brilliant 79 not out to set up a series decider in Bristol on Thursday.Mandhana all classSet a below-par target, thanks to England’s early collapse and a vastly improved performance in the field by India, Mandhana played the key role in reeling it in, facing 53 balls and finding the boundary 13 times. She put on an opening stand worth 55 with Shafali Verma, who fell for 20 to a sharp return catch by Sophie Ecclestone and an unbroken partnership of 69 with Harmanpreet Kaur, who should have been out on 19 had Danni Wyatt not spilled a straightforward chance at deep midwicket.Dayalan Hemalatha lost her off stump to a Freya Davies ball that beat the outside edge as the only other India batter to fall, and Mandhana brought up the winning runs with back-to-back fours off Davies, powered through midwicket and lofted over the bowler’s head towards long-off.England stumble, India hold onEngland started brightly enough when Sophia Dunkley clipped the third ball of match, from Renuka Singh, for four through midwicket and Wyatt nudged the fifth between backward point and short third. In the next over, however, Dunkley charged at Deepti Sharma’s first ball and was stumped by Richa Ghosh and Wyatt followed a short time later, edging Renuka to Sneh Rana at first slip.A combination of excellent fielding – an area in which India were ragged in the opening match – and a blunder by Alice Capsey made it 16 for 3. Capsey had smashed Renuka through the covers and started coming back for a third run, seemingly unaware of Radha Yadav’s brilliant effort running round to her right in the deep and sprawling at full stretch to stop the ball short of the rope and fire it fluidly into Harmanpreet inside the ring. As Bryony Smith stood her ground at the non-striker’s end, so too did Capsey, flat-footed halfway back down the pitch, watching as Harmanpreet threw to the keeper, who fumbled but broke the stumps with Capsey still nowhere near.India hadn’t completely eradicated their fielding errors with Pooja Vastrakar parrying what should have been a catch to remove Smith on 12 as she ran in from deep midwicket. But Smith fell next ball to a brilliant diving effort from Radha as she ran in from long-on off the bowling of Rana, who then had Amy Jones out attempting a reverse sweep to one that slid under the bat and clattered into off stump. Maia Bouchier, who shared a 65-run stand with Kemp, was also dropped on 25 by Kiran Navgire inside the ring, before Rana had her stumped to claim her third wicket.Kemp shinesPlaying her eighth T20I but batting for only the second time, Kemp came in at No. 7 and proceeded to resurrect the England innings with her 37-ball knock. She unleashed three sixes, twice lofting Radha down the ground to bookend her heave over deep midwicket off Renuka. She brought up her maiden international fifty with a straight-driven four off the penultimate ball of the innings and ended unbeaten on 51.Kemp made her international debut at this ground against South Africa less than two months ago as England looked to revamp their T20 side ahead of the Commonwealth Games. Primarily picked for her bowling as England look beyond veteran seamers Anya Shrubsole, who has retired from international cricket, and Katherine Brunt, rested for India’s tour, she became the youngest Englishwomen to reach fifty in T20Is at 17 years and 145 days. She is also the second-youngest for England Women in international cricket after Sarah Taylor, who scored 61 in an ODI against India in 2006 aged 17 years and 96 days.

After their elimination from the Clausura 2025 tournament, Chivas dismissed manager Gerardo Espinoza, sporting director Javier Mier announced Monday. Espinoza departs after recording two wins, three losses and four draws, with an effectiveness rate of 37%.

"The first message is to come forward and take responsibility because it is clear that the team is not where it deserves to be," Mier said. "Also, we inform you that Gerardo Espinoza will no longer continue as Chivas’ head coach. We are very thankful to him. As a coach, he is a capable Mexican, and I personally hope he gets another opportunity, because opportunities for young coaches must continue to be given."

The club's board is now searching for their third coach of the year, with Ignacio Ambriz and Jimmy Lozano emerging as the leading candidates. Mier also addressed the club’s transfer strategy and the need for players with the right mindset and pedigree, rather than flashy signings.

"Beyond marquee signings, we need players with experience and leadership," he said. "The direction of the project is what matters most. We’re looking for players who will truly contribute – not just big-name reinforcements. We need a player profile that understands things are different at Chivas. Playing here is not the same as playing elsewhere.

"We have to guide them through that process, because the responsibility lies with all of us – not just the players or the new arrivals. We’re at a turning point, and it’s time to lay down a clear foundation and make it clear what it means to be part of this club."

Chivas begin roster overhaul following their Clausura 2025 elimination, finishing 11th with 21 points. The first casualty, as expected, was Espinoza, who had stepped in as an emergency replacement for Spanish manager Óscar García. García departed after coaching the team during the early stages of the tournament.

Espinoza attempted to steady the ship but was ultimately unable to turn things around. Chivas were eliminated from the Champions Cup in the Round of 16 against América, and under his management, the team won only one match in Liga MX.

Mier confirmed that the team will return to training on May 21 to begin preseason preparations. For now, the club's top priority is to find a new coach, with transfer activity to follow afterward.

CHIVAS TVWHAT JAVIER MIER SAID

“There are three key pillars that are fundamental: we have the best youth academy, and we need to strengthen our coaches, attract the best Mexican talent, and reinforce with experienced players. We need to bring in players who have qualities that our current squad lacks – we must complement these three pillars,” said the sporting director at a news conference.

Regarding the possible departure of Chicharito Hernández, who has scored just three goals in 34 appearances since returning to the club, Mier said that he remains on the team.

"The hierarchy that Javier Hernández has, not only at Chivas but in Mexican football, he has earned it, and he has had a career that many would dream of," Mier said. "As of today, Javier is a Chivas player, and if anything were to change, it would be something that he would have to discuss with us."

Postecoglou branded Tottenham’s performance against Bournemouth “very disappointing”, with a very in-form Chelsea side awaiting his injury-ridden squad this weekend.

“Very disappointing,” said Postecoglou on Spurs’ 1-0 defeat at Bournemouth.

“We started the game well. Started the game the way we wanted to and started controlling it but we give away a poor goal, a really poor goal. Again. That allows the opposition to, and it is a difficult place to come to anyways, sit back and play the football they want. To counter-attack and we have to open up. It is disappointing and not good enough. It is not something that is a one off. We have done that now three or four times and paid a price for it.

“We started the game well but football is a game where you try to control it and dictate it to play the way you want to but when you give goals away like we did tonight, and we have done that consistently not just with set-pieces but just in general this year, it just gives the opportunity then for the opposition, particularly a team like Bournemouth, to play on the counter which is what they want to do. We have to open up. They can sit back. Just really disappointing it has happened again. Something for me to mull over and do something about.”

Tottenham are currently having to contend without star defensive duo Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero, with number one goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario also out for months after surgery on his right ankle.

This certainly hasn’t helped matters, and it is clear Spurs need to strengthen their depleted squad over the next few windows.

Tottenham preparing to open talks with Wolves forward Matheus Cunha

Gary O’Neil has emphatically ruled out a January exit for Wolves star Matheus Cunha, but that apparently won’t stop chairman Daniel Levy and technical director Johan Lange from testing the Molineux side’s resolve.

Levy is reportedly considering a new forward for Tottenham in the winter, and Cunha would be quite the statement capture.

The £60 million Brazilian has been Wolves’ superstar player this season, bagging seven goals and three assists in all competitions, with Cunha being deployed in a variety of roles as a second striker, centre-forward, winger and attacking midfield player.

This has attracted interest from N17, with Football Transfers suggesting that Tottenham are preparing to open talks with Cunha’s representatives. This signals their “determination” to seal a deal for the South American,

Wolves will apparently fight tooth and nail to keep Cunha in the Midlands, though, and are eager to hand him a brand-new contract to ward off elite suitors.
