Everton gem who left in 2023 is now "insane" and outscoring Dwight McNeil

Everton have endured an interminable period of struggle in the Premier League but might just be heading toward a new era of success, with the Friedkin Group on the cusp of purchasing Farhad Moshiri’s majority stake.

The 2024/25 campaign kicked off with four successive losses in the top flight to cast a gloomy setting over Goodison Park, but a draw at Leicester City has been followed up with a turnaround victory over Crystal Palace in the Premier League to lift Sean Dyche’s side out of the relegation zone.

The Merseysiders are indebted to Dwight McNeil’s fast start to the season, with the winger turned number ten thriving in his new role.

Dwight McNeil's recent Everton form

It’s been a bit more than two years since Everton signed McNeil from Burnley for a £20m fee. The playmaking winger had risen to first-team prominence with the Clarets – under Dyche’s wing – but had failed to save them from relegation, and was understandably allowed to move to a Premier League side.

Dwight McNeil for Everton

He’s chalked up 14 goals and 12 assists across 88 appearances for the Toffees, but is really starting to come into his own this season as he moves away from left wing to a more central attacking midfield role, flourishing.

Indeed, the 24-year-old has bagged four goals and two assists across eight matches, already surpassing last year’s haul of three goals from 41 matches in all competitions.

As per FBref, he ranks among the top 6% of positional peers across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for shot-creating actions and the top 15% for progressive carries per 90, emphasising his efficacy in driving the play forward and making things happen with his ball-playing.

McNeil has outscored Dominic Calvert-Lewin so far in 2024/25, with the centre-forward’s salvaged fitness levels allowing him to lead the line across all six of Everton’s top-flight matches this season, bagging two goals and claiming one assist.

Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin

The towering talisman might have only posted a modest return at best, but his restoration is such a bonus for the Blues in their quest to preserve top-flight status.

Believe it or not, there’s a former Everton player, sold not too long ago, who’s outscoring both of the aforementioned this season, and he did it all in just one game.

Tom Cannon is on fire for Stoke City

We’re talking, of course, about Tom Cannon, who put four past Portsmouth in the Championship on Wednesday evening in what was unquestionably the performance of the 21-year-old’s fledgling career.

Plying his trade with the Potters this term after leaving Leicester City on loan, Cannon will feel that his career is now starting to take off, having moved to Leicester from Everton last summer for roughly a £7.5m fee.

A natural-born goalscorer, Cannon excelled at youth level for Everton but failed to break into the first team despite impressing while on loan with Preston North End in 2022/23. His talent was recognised by Leicester, however, and the Liverpool-based side were happy to turn a profit.

Hailed for his “insane” performance against Portsmouth by Stoke correspondent Pete Smith, the aptly-named Cannon fired them in like howitzers to lift his loan outfit into 14th place after six fixtures, curbing a three-game losing run. Portsmouth, back in the second tier after years away, remain winless.

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast's Where Are They Now series.

As per Sofascore, the young gun showcased a skillset that stretches beyond that of a ‘poacher’, putting in a performance of a rounded and dynamic nature.

On top of his four-goal haul, Cannon succeeded with his one attempted dribble, won the penalty. that he converted for his hat-trick, completed 81% of his passes and won seven of his 11 contested duels.

Everton must rue cashing in on the talent, especially since the small fee recouped for his sale in 2023 was put toward signing Beto from Udinese in a deal worth up to £30m.

Moreover, compounding the issue, Calvert-Lewin’s contract at Goodison Park is set to expire at the end of the campaign, and though Armando Broja was welcomed from Chelsea in August on a loan deal that could become permanent, the Albania international has yet to feature as he recuperates from injury and, having endured extended spells on the sidelines in the past, perhaps can’t be entrusted with the role of focal frontman just yet.

Cannon, however, is proving that he has the goalscoring prowess to succeed in the Premier League, ranking as he does among the top 6% of strikers across divisions similar to the Championship for goals scored and the top 9% for through balls per 90.

That latter metric is particularly interesting, speaking of a passing game and enterprise in his movements that could prove to be tailor-made for Dyche’s system, dropping deep and getting stuck in but also boasting the pace and power to drive forward and get into promising positions, where he can lash shots past the goalkeeper and into the net.

Given that, on Tuesday evening, Cannon outstripped both McNeil and Calvert-Lewin for goalscoring this season despite the promise shown from each of Everton’s star forwards this year, it might come to be a well-known fact that Everton suffered a massive blunder when letting their young and talented forward, Cannon, leave for a small fee.

He’s got the quality to become a major player.

Leeds in pole position to sign "fast" EFL star who’d be a dream for Joseph

Leeds United have been dealt a number of blows on and off the pitch in recent weeks and months that have made life difficult for Daniel Farke.

Firstly, results on the pitch have not gone their way as the Whites have failed to win any of their first three games, with a 3-0 defeat to Middlesbrough in the League Cup and draws with Portsmouth and West Bromwich Albion in the Championship.

Meanwhile, off the field, the West Yorkshire outfit have had to contend with a number of players moving on from Elland Road to pursue top-flight opportunities.

Midfielders Archie Gray and Glen Kamara completed transfers to Tottenham Hotspur and Rennes respectively, whilst Charlie Cresswell joined Toulouse on a permanent basis.

Leeds then lost two of their most influential attacking options as Crysencio Summerville signed for West Ham United and Georginio Rutter joined Brighton & Hove Albion.

As you can see in the table above, both players made a big impact in the final third in the second tier last season to propel the team into the play-offs.

Leeds must now dip into the market to bolster their attack before the end of the summer transfer window, and they are reportedly eyeing up a star from the EFL.

Leeds keen on Championship winger

According to HITC, the Whites are currently in pole position to seal a deal for Burnley forward Manuel Benson before next Friday's deadline passes.

The report claims that they are one of the teams interested in signing the Angola international, who has not featured for Scott Parker in the Championship so far this season.

It states that Sunderland and Norwich City are also in the race to secure the left-footed star's services but Leeds are ahead of them due to their willingness to snap him up on a permanent basis, whereas the other two sides would prefer an initial loan move.

Manuel Benson

Benson, who joined the Clarets for a fee of £3.4m in 2022, is said to be keen on a move to Elland Road. However, there is no mention of whether or not he would also be interested in signing for Sunderland or Norwich.

HITC also does not reveal how much Burnley are set to demand from Leeds to allow the attacker to leave on a permanent basis before the end of the window.

The Whites are leading the race for his services, though, and he could be a fantastic addition to Farke's squad, whilst being a dream winger for Mateo Joseph to play with.

Why Mateo Joseph needs help

The Spain U21 international has been given a big show of faith by the German head coach at the start of this season, as he has been the starting number nine for Leeds.

Despite Patrick Bamford and Joel Piroe both being available for selection, the 20-year-old talent led the line for the team against Portsmouth and West Brom.

All 20 of his league appearances for the West Yorkshire side came as a substitute in the 2023/24 campaign, and he scored two goals in two FA Cup starts.

This suggests that Farke believes the academy graduate now has what it takes to be his starting centre-forward as part of a promotion push in the Championship this term.

However, the young marksman is yet to prove himself on a consistent basis at first-team level and that is why it is important that Leeds ensure that they have goalscoring options across the pitch to help the striker out.

There is no doubt that Joseph, who scored 19 goals in 33 matches for the club's U21 team, has the potential to develop into a lethal scorer, based on his impressive form at youth level.

As you can see in the table above, the Spanish marksman has not enjoyed a sparkling start to his time as the main centre-forward for Leeds.

However, the young talent has created one 'big chance' for his teammates so far and has been in the right place to miss a 'big chance', which – at least – suggests that he is getting into the right positions.

There is still more development to come for Joseph and that is why Leeds must sign a winger who can carry a big goal threat to take the pressure off him.

Why Leeds should sign Manuel Benson

The 27-year-old EFL ace is not in favour with Burnley at the moment but his form for the Clarets under Vincent Kompany in the 2022/23 campaign suggests that the quality is there for him to be a fantastic signing for the Whites.

He had arrived at Turf Moor in the summer of 2022 after a return of five goals and six assists in 21 starts in the Belgian Pro League for Royal Antwerp the previous season.

The Angola international, who was once dubbed "fast" by agent Patrick de Koster, had showcased his ability to provide quality as a scorer and a creator of goals in Belgium and carried that form over to his first time in the second tier with Burnley.

As you can see in the table above, Benson was involved in 14 goals in 33 appearances for the Clarets as they won the Championship title, despite only starting 14 of those games.

He ranked within the top 6% of attacking midfielders in the division for Expected Assisted Goals per 90 (0.25) and this suggests that the winger could create high-quality opportunities for Joseph on a regular basis if he plays regular football for Leeds.

Meanwhile, his return of 11 goals in 14 starts equated to 0.66 non-penalty goals per 90 – placing him in the top 1% of his positional peers – and this means that the attacker could be a dream addition as a big goalscoring threat.

Leeds could brilliantly replace Kamara with star who's pushing to join

The Whites are reportedly interested in signing the central midfielder this month.

His ability to find the back of the net consistently could take some of the pressure off Joseph's shoulders, which is another reason why he would be a dream for the youngster.

South Africa eye series-levelling punch in tough summer finale

Big picture

The end of South Africa’s summer is approaching and they have everything to play for. Although victory in the fourth and final T20I against Pakistan won’t give them a second trophy this season, it will mean they will share the spoils in a series where they were without seven first-choice players, and could be a reason to go into the winter with at least some satisfaction after another tough period.South Africa started the season with defeat against England in their first bio-secure fixtures, then beat a depleted Sri Lanka, before losing to Pakistan, away and at home. Their rebuilding phase has settled into a semi-permanence of sorts, with continued experimentation in personnel and combinations. One thing they seem to have discovered is that teams they put onto the field regularly compete, even if they don’t win.Related

  • Klaasen: Babar, Rizwan 'made a lot of good balls look bad'

For Pakistan, that’s an interesting consideration because they have brought their best and they have been challenged. They will take comfort from knowing they have come out on top and will want to seal the deal with a T20I series win to add to their ODI trophy. It’s no small accomplishment to win in South Africa, and to do it across formats is something they will be aiming for.To achieve that, they will want to tighten up on their bowling in the early part of the innings against an opening pair with little to lose. Aiden Markram was not even supposed to play in this series but then captain Temba Bavuma got injured, while Janneman Malan found himself warming in the bench until the five IPL-bound players had left. In the third match, Pakistan conceded 65 runs against these two in the powerplay, the most they have leaked in that period since 2007.Though they have routinely pulled South Africa back, twice in this series Pakistan have had to chase record targets. A more disciplined bowling effort upfront will avoid that becoming three times. South Africa have the opposite problem. They are trying to perfect their death bowling to avoid letting Pakistan get completely away from them. Both sides will want more from their middle orders, if needs be, with Pakistan heavily reliant on their top three and South Africa carrying a long tail. In that sense, they have some similarities across their squads, which is what has made for such an entertaining and engaging contest, which is perfectly poised for a grand finale in the fourth T20I.

In the spotlight

Instead of marking his run-up with his initials, Lizaad Williams writes the words “thank you” on the grass in a show of gratitude to a game which has given him a career. Now, he has the chance to ensure it’s an international career he continues to have. He is the series’ leading wicket-taker and although his economy of 9.12 might read a tad high, among seamers only Hasan Ali has been less expensive. Williams has been identified as a death-bowling prospect and although South Africa also have Sisanda Magala in that role, with Andile Phehlukwayo not being used, Williams could make a big statement in the final game.Lizaad Williams is pumped after picking up a wicket•AFP/Getty Images

South Africa probably can’t wait to see the back of Mohammad Rizwan, who has been a nemesis to them all summer, at home and away, and the Pakistan opener probably wishes he could play against them forever. Rizwan has scored a Test and a T20I century, and three T20I fifties against South Africa since February. His T20I average against them is 74.60, almost double his overall average of 38.64. Although he played a supporting role to his captain Babar Azam in the third T20I, his contribution was crucial to ensuring Pakistan cannot lose the series and he has the chance for a last hurrah against his favourite opponents.

Team news

If South Africa make any changes, they are most likely to be in the bowling department after Boucher confirmed that Kyle Verreynne was included as a back-up wicketkeeper. Lutho Sipamla could come into contention, most likely at the expense of Beuran Hendricks, who has been expensive.South Africa (possible): 1 Aiden Markram, 2 Janneman Malan, 3 Rassie van der Dussen, 4 Pite van Biljon, 5 Heinrich Klaasen (wk), 6 George Linde, 7 Andile Phehlukwayo, 8 Sisanda Magala, 9 Beuran Hendricks/Lutho Sipamla, 10 Lizaad Williams, 11 Tabraiz ShamsiBarring any more allergic reactions, Pakistan should remain unchanged with Azam and Mohammad Rizwan opening the batting and Fakhar Zaman to come in at No.3. Usman Qadir may not be able to find his way back in just yet with Mohammad Nawaz doing the spin duties among four quicks.Pakistan (possible): 1 Mohammad Rizwan (wk), 2 Babar Azam (capt), 3 Fakhar Zaman, 4 Mohammad Hafeez, 5 Haider Ali, 6 Asif Ali, 7 Mohammad Nawaz, 8 Faheem Ashraf, 9 Hasan Ali, 10 Shaheen Shah Afridi, 11 Haris Rauf

Pitch and conditions

After the run-fest of the third T20I and Heinrich Klaasen’s admission that defending a score is difficult in Centurion, it’s safe to say we can expect more runs. South Africa’s Indian summer continues with mid-April temperatures in the upper 20s and and the thunderstorms put on pause until the spring.

Stats and trivia

  • Pakistan have not lost a T20I match at SuperSport Park, winning on all three occasions they’ve played there.
  • Aiden Markram has joined Hashim Amla as the only two South African batters to score three fifties in consecutive men’s T20I games. If he repeats the feat in this game, he will equal Brendon McCullum and Chris Gayle’s record of four successive fifties.

Quotes

“We went from an absolute high three days ago to last night. The realisation that it’s T20 cricket and when things go bad, it can look really bad. And I’m not making any excuses. As quickly as it can happen, it can turn around again. If we arrive with the right attitude and control what we can control – which is attitude, intensity, the energy we bring – things can turn around very quickly.

Jonny Bairstow's proactive approach smooths England's path to victory

Batsman sets out stall for winter with impressive display after year out of Test team

Andrew Miller18-Jan-2021Jonny Bairstow has said that the pleasure of sealing victory in the first Test at Galle makes the hardships of life in the England bubble worthwhile, after he and Dan Lawrence soothed the team’s jitters on the final morning to seal an emphatic seven-wicket victory over Sri Lanka.Bairstow, back in the Test side for the first time in more than a year, impressed in both innings, with a hard-fought 47 on the first day, and an unbeaten 35 on the fifth, as he withstood the threat of Sri Lanka’s spinners – in particular Lasith Embuldeniya – in an unbroken 62-run stand for the fourth wicket. And while it’s early days in his return to Test cricket, the confidence and proactivity shown by Bairstow on a wearing pitch augurs well for the rest of a tough winter schedule, starting with Friday’s second Test, also at Galle, and moving swiftly on to four Tests in India.”We saw yesterday a lot more balls were raising off a length, there were some chunks coming out just over the five-foot mark,” Bairstow said in the moments after hitting the winning boundary for England. “It was tricky, so I think the big decision was just being precise in your movements. We saw going forward and really stretching, it was bouncing.”Bairstow’s sixth and most recent Test century also came while batting at No. 3 in Sri Lanka two winters ago, and his tally of 82 runs for once out in this contest lifts his overall average from 13 Tests in Asia to 37.63, a higher figure than his overall mark of 35.14.Though his return to the team came about, in part, due to some notable absentees – most particularly Ben Stokes, rested for this leg of the winter, but also Ollie Pope, who is currently recovering from a shoulder injury – Bairstow’s proven ability against spin could yet make him a key part of England’s line-up for the remainder of the winter.Even so, he might have been run out early in his innings, after taking off for an unwise single moments after his captain, Joe Root, had departed in the same manner. But thereafter Bairstow exuded confidence, both in his own game, and in that of his young batting partner, Lawrence, who finished an outstanding debut on 21 not out to go with his first-innings 73.Asked what advice he had offered his team-mate when play resumed on the final morning, Bairstow said: “Look, you need 36 runs. I think that’s the that’s the be-all and end-all of it, isn’t it? It doesn’t matter how you get there. You just need to score the runs and, on a pitch like that, I think if you’re not proactive, if you’re not looking to score in your areas, then I think there’s going to be a good ball that comes your way.”That was the mindset, to go out and be busy, running between the wickets is a huge a huge part of it, especially over here with the outfields being slightly slower. Just making sure that we’re pressing them in the field, and running hard.”The win was England’s fourth in a row in Asia, dating back to their 3-0 series success on the last tour of Sri Lanka, and their fourth in a row overseas, following a trio of wins in South Africa last winter, a feat that England have not achieved since the 1950s. And Bairstow was delighted, not just for himself, but for the whole team that has had to adapt its preparations to cope with the restrictions of the Covid-19 pandemic.”It’s absolutely fantastic,” he said. “It’s difficult when you come to the subcontinent. You know the challenges that you’re going to have, but to get a win on the board in the first game, with a pretty short lead-up to be quite honest, is pleasing for all the boys.”Rooty in the first innings, Bessy with the ball in the first innings, Leachy in the second innings, and the efforts that the fast bowlers put in as well, I think a huge amount of credit has to go to them.Dan Lawrence and Jonny Bairstow celebrate the moment of victory•SLC

“They properly toiled away, Sam [Curran] got that early breakthrough, there was Broady too in the first innings with his legcutters, and then someone like Woody. The hard toil that he’s put in there, running in and really making it uncomfortable, it puts people on the back foot to try and exploit other options at the other end, so a huge amount of credit goes to those guys.”It’s been tricky,” he added, when asked about adapting to life inside the England bubble. “I was happy that the Christmas break came around because I think I had about six nights at home since the beginning of August.”It’s tough, I’m not going to lie about it. It’s something that does take its toll, because you are going from hotel to the cricket ground and back to the hotel, and unfortunately the guys are not able to see their families, kids, wives, girlfriends over long periods of time.”The lads have all got addicted to Call of Duty, but it’s the Skype chats with people back home who have been with you through thick and thin that keep you going, and it’s wins like this, and moments like this, that really make it even more special when you’re away from home so much.”England may well rotate their options with the second Test getting underway in just four days’ time. James Anderson is likely to come into the side, potentially to give Broad a rest, while Olly Stone is a possibility to replace Wood, whose extra pace was a welcome asset but whose injury record invites caution when it comes to back-to-back Tests.Related

Jonny Bairstow, Dan Lawrence seal emphatic seven-wicket win on final morning

Root, England’s captain, said the management would use their extra day of rest to assess their options, but paid his own tribute to the efforts of Bairstow and Lawrence in smoothing the team’s path to victory.”That’s exactly what you want to see as captain, guys getting opportunities and really taking them in both hands,” he said. “For a young guy like Dan to come in and play with such maturity, such a calm nature, and to be put in that situation last night and handle it how he did was really impressive for a guy making his debut,”And it’s really pleasing for Jonny as well. I think both innings showed his class, showed he’s got a very good game against spin, and a very good game for Test cricket. It’s lovely to see them both perform so well and start the winter really strongly.”It is great to know that, with a number of guys being rested and out currently, guys are coming into those positions and there is that strength there, and we’re building all the time as a group and as a squad. That’s what you want to see and hopefully that continues moving forward.”Both Bairstow and Root also paid tribute to Rob Lewis, the lone England fan on the fort at Galle, who had stayed in Sri Lanka when the last tour in March had to be postponed due to the Covid outbreak, and who ended up being a rare witness to England’s achievement, seeing as even the travelling media and most of the match commentators have been covering the game remotely.”It’s an incredible story,” Root said, after speaking on the phone with Lewis in the wake of the victory. “To see him struggle to get on the fort the first couple of days, then finally up there enjoying himself and getting to watch some cricket was fantastic. All of the guys really appreciate him being there and the support we get from everyone that comes and watches us. He was almost a beacon for everyone at home watching on the screens.”We are very lucky to get the support we do everywhere in the world. It was nice that at the end of the game I managed to have a little conversation with him over the phone. It’s a really interesting story and it was lovely for him to enjoy that moment with the rest of the group.”

Kane Williamson's 251 puts New Zealand in a dominant position

Control your game, you control game. That is Kane Williamson in a nutshell. Every defining trait of his batting – the obsession with playing late, the aversion to hitting in the air, the freakish ability to never ever follow a swinging ball – is an effort to put his team in the best possible position to win a Test match and he did just that, while also scoring a career-best 251.Watch the cricket on ESPN+

New Zealand vs West Indies is available in the USA on ESPN+. Subscribe to ESPN+ and tune in to the series

West Indies couldn’t hold a consistent line and length at the start of play on day one, but since the first break in play at Hamilton, they settled into better rhythm. Those good habits filtered into their openers as well with Kraigg Brathwaite and John Campbell batting out 26 testing overs to stumps. They showed great determination and skill. They had to after watching an opposition batsman dominate for almost 150 overs.Williamson was so precise with his decision-making. If a ball was full and wide and he could reach the pitch of it, he went for the drive. That was how he went past 200. If it was short and wide, he stood tall and smashed ’em square on the off side. That is how he went past 100. If it wasn’t any of those things, he called on his unyielding technique to protect him from being dismissed.Kemar Roach was able to conjure several dangerous deliveries, routinely going wide of the crease in search of the outside edge. With his remarkable ability to straighten the ball no matter how steep the angle is into the right-hander, he was a constant threat.Williamson faced several jaffas like those and although he was beaten more than once, he never looked like nicking off. It isn’t the first time the New Zealand captain has exhibited such slipperiness. For some reason, he seems immune to the very human instinct to follow the ball, especially when it threatens to move late. If you’re even a half-decent batsman, you want to feel bat on ball. If you’re a great one, you just know better. These really aren’t easy conditions to bat in. The amount of grass on the pitch preserves that red Kookaburra so that even at 80 overs, it keeps swinging and seaming. And yet Williamson, all through the second session, was going at monster pace. He bolted from 136 off 294 at the end of the 103rd over to 251 off 412 when he was finally dismissed. That’s 115 runs off 118 balls and in light of such mastery, even fate couldn’t help but fall for him.On 221, after Williamson had dismissed Roach to the long-on and midwicket boundaries with devastating authority, he was caught behind to an outswinger. But even as he was leaving the field, after more than 550 minutes at the crease, the cricket gods decided they wanted more. They wanted to see more shots like that audacious flick down the ground. A full ball outside the off stump, searching for his outside edge, had no business being treated that way. But it was and it was thanks to Williamson’s wristwork, his balance and the way he stood tall and waited for it to get right under his eyes. It was all quite mesmerising. So, naturally, the gods made the one ball that was good enough to take Williamson’s edge a no-ball.They couldn’t protect him from himself though. As he went for back-to-back sixes in order to enable a declaration, he was caught at deep midwicket. Kyle Jamieson, who may be prompting people to start calling him an allrounder, also chipped in with his maiden Test half-century to lift New Zealand to 519 for 7.West Indies would have been dreaming of a very different day. It had begun with Shannon Gabriel securing Ross Taylor’s wicket in the second over of the morning. Roach had Henry Nicholls flashing outside his off stump. Those two wickets in the first hour of play threatened the notion that West Indies would be able to limit the damage they let happen on the first day. Instead, they ended up like the villains in a Scooby Doo cartoon. “I would’ve gotten away with it if not for that meddling Kane.”

Club mulling visit to Lahore to prepare for 2021 season after revelations England may travel to the country

George Dobell21-Oct-2020Pakistan’s reputation as open for business looks set to take another step forward with news that at least a couple of England’s first-class counties are considering the country as an option for their pre-season tours.Days after ESPNcricinfo revealed that England are considering a short tour to the country in January, it has emerged that Warwickshire are considering visiting Lahore as part of their preparations for the 2021 domestic season.ALSO READ: ECB confirms plans to undertake first tour of Pakistan in more than 15 yearsESPNcricinfo understands the club have held talks with Pakistan CEO, Wasim Khan, with a view to sending the entire first team squad to the country in March. Wasim, a former Warwickshire player, is believed to have guaranteed good quality training facilities and opposition. If the tour goes ahead, it seems likely the side will be based at Aitchison College. Two senior Warwickshire players, Will Rhodes, the club captain, and Oliver Hannon-Dalby, went on the MCC’s tour to Pakistan in February, which was also based at Aitchison College. Both enjoyed the experience and have given positive reports about the facilities on offer.A final decision will not be made until the club are satisfied that the tour is safe in terms of both security and Covid-19. Finances could also be an issue, with the club also understood to be considering La Manga, in Spain, as a pre-season option.Either way, the fact that Pakistan is being considered for such visits is a sure sign of progress. England have not visited the country since late 2005 due to security concerns.
