All times are local.6.00pm: Stumps – India 36 for 1India’s bowlers did all that could be asked of them on the opening day of the Boxing Day Test as they removed Australia for 195 led by Jasprit Bumrah, R Ashwin and a superb debut by Mohammed Siraj with the home side unable to post a half-century between them.Faced with just under an hour to bat at the end of the day, and the 36 all out still fresh in the memory, a thunderous first over from Mitchell Starc – among the finest you will see to start an innings – concluded with Mayank Agarwal being pinned lbw having done well to survive the first five deliveries.Even with 27,615 spectators (itself a triumph for many reasons) the ground reverberated to the excitement of what could be about to unfold, but debutant Shubman Gill and the experience of Cheteshwar Pujara took the sting out of the mini session – aided by Gill being dropped on 4 at slip by Marnus Labuschagne – to the extent that they scored at three-and-a-half an over.Australia’s total followed their 191 first innings in Adelaide as ball continued rule in the early stages of the series, the opening day of this Test coming on an MCG surface that offered more encouragement than any in recent memory. Those planning to attend the fourth day will be a touch nervous.5.05pm: Australia 195 all outSo Australia couldn’t reach 200 in their first innings for the second match running. India needed a good day to start this day and with an hour remaining they have had one. But that last hour could define the day. If they through with one wicket lost that would cap the performance. Memories of day three in Adelaide will be fresh for both sides. The India bowlers could not have done much more.

4.55pm: Can India finish strongly? It has been an superb day for India, but they will wrap up Australia swiftly. While certainly a below-par total there is enough in the pitch for the quicks and spinners to suggest it will remain tricky for batsmen. If the tail can get the total to 200, Australia certainly have an attack to keep them in the game. Don’t forget, it was only a week ago India were bowled out for 36. They won’t be full of confidence with the bat.4.15pm: Into the bowlers Mohammed Siraj’s outstanding first day in Test cricket has continued by trapping Cameron Green lbw to leave Australia 155 for 6 and the bowlers exposed. Can India keep Australia to around 200? That would be some effort.

4.00pm: Paine out or not out?Tim Paine is still batting thanks to a borderline decision from the third umpire, Paul Wilson, who ruled there was no conclusive evidence to give him run out. It was a question of a missing frame and it went in Paine’s favour. It has certainly prompted some debate on social media. Also worth noting that unlike in the day-night Test it is back to the traditional stumps and bails. Here’s Sid Monga

Whether you agree with the not-out call on that run-out appeal against Tim Paine or not, it is important evidence that technology is not always 100%. Even with line calls. The replays here showed the bat on the line from one angle, but possibly in from the other. Now it is the same bat and the same wicket, and the technology has returned an ambiguous verdict. This is why there is an umpire’s call in the game. This is why we need umpires. This is why please spare a moment before you rant against a tight short run called by an on-field umpire but a replay from one angle shows the bat possibly slightly in.

3.30pm: Dean Jones tribute

Dean Jones’ cap, bat and sunglasses rest by the stumps•Getty Images

Here’s Dan’s piece from when Dean Jones passed away3.10pm: Tea – Australia 136 for 5A huge moment came shortly before tea when a perfectly executed plan removed Marnus Labuschagne, flicked Mohammed Siraj around the corner where Shubman Gill held an excellent catch at leg gully. It was deserved reward for Siraj who has been impressive on his debut and, alongside the wicket of Head, gave India the afternoon honours and left a lot resting on the shoulders of Cameron Green and Tim Paine. However, the form of Australia’s captain offers hope of a recovery. He is now second behind Adam Gilchrist for averages among Australia’s wicketkeeper-batsman. Dan Brettig wrote about it in the lead-up to the Test.2.40pm: Around the wicket does for HeadTravis Head was starting to go through the gears, but Jasprit Bumrah made the breakthrough for India when he drew a thick outside from around the wicket which was well held at around fourth slip by Ajinkya Rahane. It is an angle of attack that has regularly troubled Head: in his Test career he averages 24.20 facing right arm pace bowlers around the wicket compared to 40.00 from over-the-wicket.

2.10pm: Australia steadiedMarnus Labuschagne and Travis Head have done a very good job for Australia since lunch, although it feels as though India have slightly taken their foot off the gas. Jasprit Bumrah was held back from another spell until just before the drinks break. Labuschagne did take a strong blow on the helmet from a Mohammed Siraj short ball which led to a significant delay as his helmet was checked. Head, meanwhile, who is could be under a little bit of pressure when David Warner returns has been very compact and punchy. The pitch continues to bring a excellent balance between bat and ball, but it has flattened out and this could now be an afternoon to cash in.Head will have good memories of last year’s Boxing Day Test against New Zealand.1.50pm: Bowling tacticsHere’s Sid Monga

Nick Knight has made this point on air too, and it is something worth debating. The rule of thumb generally is to start a new session with two bowlers likeliest to get a wicket. On the evidence of the first session, these two gentlemen are Jasprit Bumrah and R Ashwin. Now I know you want to play the debutant Mohammed Siraj into the game and you haven’t bowled him at all in the first session, but India will be wondering if they should have been more ruthless with the start of the session. Now Ashwin has been replaced by Umesh Yadav. Still no Bumrah, and since lunch Australia have added 25 for 0 in eight overs since lunch.

1.25pm: Siraj gets his chance He was the fifth bowler used, but Mohammed Siraj started his Test career with the ball when he started the second session. And it was a promising beginning, hitting a good length around off stump and touch 143kph. It’s also worth noting that his career best 8 for 59 came against an Australia A side and his haul included Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne.Just back to Steven Smith for a moment: today was his fifth Test duck and first since 2016.12.30pm: Lunch – Australia 65 for 3That’s India’s session and just what they needed after the Adelaide collapse. It was within a whisker of being even better when Marnus Labuschagne survive an lbw on the DRS having been given out to R Ashwin sweeping. The bounce saved Labuschagne after he had been given out on the field. Labuschagne had been keen to try and score but it has been harder work for Travis Head who has battled to 4 off 37 balls. Mohammed Siraj is still waiting for his first bowl in Test cricket while Ravindra Jadeja released a little bit of the pressure with a few loose deliveries. Here’s Sid Monga:

Watching Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor grind out tough runs in Mount Maunganui on the other screen, you are left wondering if Australia’s batting has been too casual for a first session in a Test match. R Ashwin has been phenomenal again – a bonus for a visiting side’s spinner to get this early assistance, which could just be because of the early moisture – but look at the number of casual shots. It started with that waft from Matthew Wade, but let’s not look at just the wickets. Marnus Labuschagne has been extremely fortunate to still be there despite a flurry of loose shots.

Just as a comparison, during the 36 all out, India were not in control of just 32 deliveries. In this session alone, Australia’s batsmen made a false response to 29 deliveries for the loss of just three wickets. The expectation in the coming session will be that the pitch will settle down a little with the sun beating down, but India will fancy themselves to keep them under pressure because they have got these wickets already.

12.00pm: Ashwin v SmithESPNcricinfo LtdOnly one person is winning this head-to-head so far:26.6 Ashwin to Smith, OUT, got him, Ashwin has struck with an absolute beauty! He got Smith like this in Dharamsala in 2017, but that was from around the wicket. I don’t know if this was meant to go on straight or if it was just natural variation, but he plays back to a length ball just outside off, and it skids through quick, takes the outside edge of his defensive bat, and straight into Ajinkya Rahane’s lap at slip. Almost seemed to leave Smith off the pitch, kind of like the Mohammad Nabi arm ball14.3 Ashwin to Smith, OUT, big, big moment. Smith has glanced one to Pujara at leg gully. Ashwin bowls one down the leg side, not sure how much that was part of the plan but Smith couldn’t help and looks to get off the mark. Makes the connection alright but ends up hitting it straight to Pujara, who tumbles to complete the catch. Smith fetches a blob, means he has two runs in three innings with one not-out for Smith so far in this series11.30am: Tense opening hourIt has been an absorbing start to this Test with a bit of life in the pitch meaning a good battle between bat and ball. Matthew Wade, having played very well for an hour, has given his wicket away by lofting R Ashwin into the leg side where Ravindra Jadeja clung onto a superb catch despite almost colliding with Shubman Gill. In an interesting move from Ajinkya Rahane, who has replaced Virat Kohli as captain, he brought on Ashwin inside the first hour and there was some early turn on offer. Umesh Yadav hasn’t been quite as consistent as Jasprit Bumrah but two wickets is good reward for India and puts some pressure on Australia.11.00am: Early strike for IndiaIndia have been rewarded for some good early bowling by removing Joe Burns for a duck. Jasprit Bumrah was especially challenging with the new ball and found a thin edge from Burns in his third over to make it back-to-back Boxing Day ducks for the opener. There is encouraging pace and carry in the pitch with signs that India can make it hard work. Matthew Wade has looked very confident, nailing a couple of sweet drives through the off side against Umesh Yadav.

10.15am: Remebering DeanoHere’s Dan Brettig from the MCG on how one of Australia’s greats will be honoured

Tributes to Dean Jones will take on many and varied dimensions during the Test. A whole bay of MCG seats has been handed over to a large image of Jones, while spectators have been encouraged to “zinc up” in homage to Jones’ habit of doing likewise when he played. Jones’ family will be present at the MCG for the match, with a teatime video tribute scheduled to take place at 3.24pm, recognising Jones’ baggy green cap number and also his highest first-class score of 324 against South Australia in a day/night Sheffield Shield match at the MCG in 1994-95.

Dean Jones on his way to a double-hundred•Getty Images10.05am: Australia bat firstThe coin fell in Tim Paine’s favour and he was happy to bat first. Wonder of Ajinkya Rahane was happy he didn’t have to make the decision. If there is any early life, Jasprit Bumrah should be able to find it.Here’s a bit more on India’s other debutant Mohammed Siraj9.50am: Pitch reportDamien Fleming, on Channel Seven, says there is 11mm of grass on this pitch. That could interest the quick bowlers on both sides, but surely it’s a bat first day. It’s a clear, sunny, warm day. India need to put that Adelaide batting performance behind them as quickly as possible.12:31

‘Australia have obvious holes that India can still exploit’

9.30am: Boxing Day at the G

Welcome, everyone, to one of the iconic days on the cricket calendar: Boxing Day at the MCG. For a long time it looked as though this wouldn’t happen so it’s great that the series has got here and that we’ll have 30,000 spectators. Just to recap where we are in this contest – India have to find a way to bounce back from being bundled out for their lowest Test score (36) in Adelaide a week ago. We already know they have made four changes in an attempt to do that – two of them enforced with the absence of Virat Kohli and Mohammed Shami – but it will be a mighty task. Australia are still without David Warner and have named an unchanged team. Not often you have both XIs confirmed 24 hours out from the game. The toss is half an hour away.India will have two debutants: Shubman Gill and Mohammed Siraj. If you want to know a bit more about Gill, a hugely talented batsman, have a look at this piece below.

Arsenal hit gold on "world-class" ace who’s worth way more than Calafiori

The transfer window is heating up after a few weeks of relative quiet.

On the back of another Premier League campaign in which they almost dethroned Manchester City, Arsenal have already announced their first signing, 18-year-old Lucas Nygaard, and have been linked to practically every striker under the sun as it's one of the obvious areas in the team that could be improved.

However, one of the most recent players touted for a move to N5 has been Italy and Bologna star Riccardo Calafiori.

The 22-year-old looks to be one of the most exciting young centre-backs around at the moment, and while he'd likely be a brilliant addition to the Gunners' backline, they already have someone playing there who is worth considerably more.

William Saliba's Arsenal career

The star in question is the one and only William Saliba, who has established himself as one of the leading centre-backs in the Premier League in just two seasons of first-team football. However, his future didn't always seem so inevitable.

Just over five years ago, Arsenal paid Saint-Étienne a fee of around £27m for the then highly sought-after 18-year-old centre-back, and opted to send him back to the French outfit for the 2019/20 campaign to further develop.

The following summer saw the Bondy-born gem return to England, but after being left out of the competitive squads, he was sent back to France to join Nice on loan in January, leading to speculation over his future in North London.

This speculation only increased the following season when he was sent back to his home country for a third campaign on the bounce to join Ligue 1 giants Marseille, where he thrived.

In all, he made 52 appearances for Les Phocéens, won the Ligue 1 Young Player of the Season Award, and looked, for all intents and purposes, like he would stay on the French Riviera permanently at one point.

However, once the season ended, and he returned to England, he was finally given a chance to prove his worth in red and white.

His competitive debut for the Gunners came in the opening game of the 2022/23 Premier League campaign, a game away to Crystal Palace, and, thanks to a stellar performance, he won the Player of the Match award.

From that point onward, the 6 foot 4 titan went from strength to strength and became arguably the most important player on the team, so much so that it was his injury against Sporting CP that signalled the end of Arsenal's surprise title challenge. To reflect his massive contribution, he was awarded a new contract last summer.

It was more of the same last season. With no injury concerns, the French international started 100% of league games and played 100% of league minutes for Arteta as the team once again came agonizingly close to ending the club's two-decade title drought.

Saliba's impressive rise to the top and his brilliant performances at the Euros have seen his valuation soar in recent years. His potential impact on the team is immense, and while Calafiori would be an exciting addition to the defence, his valuation is nowhere near that of the Arsenal star.

Saliba's valuation in 2024

If Arsenal want to secure Calafiori's signature ahead of the chasing pack this summer, it will cost them around £40m to do so, and while that is undoubtedly a significant sum of money, it is still significantly less than the price tag on Saliba's head.

According to Transfermarkt, the "world-class" centre-back, as dubbed by data analyst Ben Mattinson, is worth around €80m, which converts to about £68m, or a cool £28m more than the Italian's potential transfer fee.

Now, considering the importance of the Frenchman to Arsenal's success and the willingness of clubs to spend exorbitant fees on players, you could argue that Transfermarkt have been quite conservative with their valuation there.

Moreover, with reports that Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona and even Real Madrid are all interested in luring the 23-year-old away from North London, it seems unlikely that the Gunners would accept any offers of around £68m, especially when there are still three years remaining on his £190k-per-week contract.

Ultimately, Calafiori would be an exciting signing, but Arsenal are already incredibly fortunate to have one of the Premier League's best centre-backs in Saliba.

With Gunners skipper Martin Odegaard ruled out through injury, England international Saka was asked to provide on-field leadership during a crucial Premier League clash with fellow title hopefuls Manchester City. He then led Arsenal out in a Champions League meeting with Paris Saint-Germain at Emirates Stadium.

Academy graduate Saka, who is just 23 years of age, has told of his reaction to being asked by Mikel Arteta to take on captaincy duties: “That's one of the things where I become speechless when people ask me. Everyone knows my journey, where I came from. To take the captain's armband, walk the lads out at the Emirates Stadium. I can't put it into words.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Saka has proven himself deserving of such an honour, with 236 appearances taken in for Arsenal. He now fills their No.7 jersey and added on being a source of inspiration to fans – young and old – around the world: “When the new kits come out you see it across all of London. I'm always looking out to see if someone has my number on. It's always a nice feeling when you see a little kid or an older man wearing one of my shirts. I never take it for granted and if I can give them a bit of my time, a bit of love back to them, I'll try to do that too.”

Saka has registered three goals for the Gunners this season and will be back in domestic action on October 19 when taking in a trip to Bournemouth – with there two UEFA Nations League fixtures with England, against Greece and Finland, to occupy his thoughts prior to that.

Fabrizio Romano: "Exceptional" youngster "set to leave" Man Utd this summer

An "exceptional" Manchester United academy graduate is "set to leave" the club during the summer transfer window, according to Fabrizio Romano, joining plenty of others out of the exit door in the process.

Varane and Martial leaving Man Utd

This summer threatens to be one of real change at Old Trafford, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe looking to make serious inroads in the transfer market. There is also the future of Erik ten Hag that has to be decided, as those high up at the club choose whether to retain the manager's services or not.

Two players who have no future at United are Raphael Varane and Anthony Martial, both of whom will depart when their respective contracts expire this month.

Manchester United's Raphael Varane.

Varane arrived at Old Trafford amid much fanfare back in 2021, having enjoyed so much Champions League success with Real Madrid – he won Europe's most prestigious competition four times – as well as securing 2018 World Cup glory with France. In truth, the 31-year-old's time with the Red Devils has been disappointing, however, with injuries often getting in the way.

Meanwhile, Martial has been one of the most injury-affected players at United over the past decade or so, arriving from Monaco back in 2015, but so often finding himself on the sidelines. Granted, the Frenchman has still scored 90 goals in 317 appearances for the club, making him a positive signing overall, but his influence has waned as the years have passed.

Now, it looks as though another player is also on his way out of the club, joining Varane and Martial in heading off to pastures new.

Man Utd also set to lose "exceptional" youngster

Taking to X, Romano said that Omari Forson will leave Manchester United when his contract runs out this summer, bringing an end to his time at the club:

"Omari Forson, set to leave Manchester United as free agent in June. After his debut in February with Man Utd first team, Omari’s set for new chapter. There are several clubs already keen on signing Forson, as 19 year old striker is attracting interest."

It is a shame to see Forson move on, considering the 19-year-old has been such a highly thought of figure at United for some time, even being likened to Kobbie Mainoo in terms of talent. Meanwhile, academy director Nick Cox has heaped praise on the youngster:

"On the pitch he was part of our successful FA Youth Cup-winning squad in 2022. Interestingly, Omari didn’t feature heavily in the cup run but showed exceptional resilience, and that’s a reminder that the journey isn’t always smooth and straightforward."

This does feel like the right decision, however, with Forson's minutes likely to remain limited moving forward, especially with United expected to make further attacking signings in the summer transfer window.

The young Englishman is better off finding another permanent squad where he can be a regular, and the fact that there is already interest in him bodes well for his future.

The Leeds academy sensation who could eventually replace Gnonto

Leeds United have it all to play for when they host Norwich City at Elland Road in the second leg of the Championship play-off semi-finals on Thursday night.

The Whites were held to a 0-0 draw by the Canaries in the first leg at Carrow Road on Sunday and will now compete for a place in the final at Wembley later this week.

Daniel Farke's side do not yet know what division they will be competing in for the 2024/25 campaign, yet there has already been transfer speculation ahead of the summer window.

Football Insider reported last month that the club would accept an offer in the region of £30m for Wilfried Gnonto, should a team come in with a firm offer in that ballpark.

Farke, however, may already have an heir to the Italian's place in the squad within the academy set-up, as young forward Josh McDonald has shown great potential this season.

Wilfried Gnonto's Championship form

The 20-year-old forward has enjoyed a solid, if unspectacular, campaign with Leeds in the Championship, after being part of the team that suffered relegation from the Premier League last term.

Gnonto has failed to nail down a place in the starting XI throughout the entire season, with 19 starts out of 36 league appearances, but has chipped in with double figures for goals and assists.

As you can see in the table above, the former Zurich star has been directly involved in ten goals, with eight strikes and two assists, in 36 outings.

That is an average of one goal or assist every 3.6 matches on average in the second tier, which shows that he has been a semi-regular contributor in the final third.

Why Josh McDonald could be Wilfried Gnonto's heir

Amid speculation over Gnonto's future at Elland Road, McDonald could eventually emerge as his replacement in Yorkshire if he continues to impress at academy level.

The talented whiz, who only turned 17 in March, has enjoyed a terrific season for the U18s at Thorp Arch, with a return of seven goals and seven assists in all competitions.

He has racked up seven goals and six assists in 22 U18 Premier League matches, an average of one goal contribution every 1.69 outings, and produced one assist in six FA Youth Cup clashes.

The impressive youngster, who can play on the left or the right flank, was described as a "lovely" player by journalist Connor McGilligan earlier this month, and his statistics back that up.

McDonald appears to be an excellent prospect for Leeds on paper with his fantastic contributions as both a scorer and a creator of goals for the U18 side.

It is, of course, now down to him to prove that his form can translate over to the U21 team and then the first-team in the years to come to stake a claim for a place in the senior squad.

If he can continue to replicate his current level of scoring and creating, then he could eventually be a fantastic heir to Gnonto's position out wide, as a forward who can score and assist goals more frequently than the Italian.

£50k-p/w player "closer than ever" to leaving Leeds for £0 in financial hit

Leeds United could be forced to let one of their players leave for nothing this summer, it has emerged, after a clause in their contract came to light.

Championship beckons for Leeds

A 1-0 loss at Wembley to Southampton on Sunday ensured that Leeds will be playing Championship football once more next season, and continued their wretched curse of never having been promoted via the playoffs.

After the game, Daniel Farke rued the lack of precision from his side, admitting that he felt his team "were not the worse side".

"I can’t really say we are the worst side in this final and to lose this final hurts a lot. In the final third, we were not fully committed to the attack. We were not over-precise with the pass."

But the knock on effect that promotion failure is likely to have at Elland Road could be the real tragedy, with players seemingly already lining up at the exit door and Leeds needing to sell before they can buy anyone with a massive £73.5m of transfer fees still owed this summer.

Crysencio Summerville, the Championship player of the year, seems primed to leave ahead of the new season amid Premier League interest, while Wilfried Gnonto is another that is likely to depart, and question marks remain over whether Joe Rodon can be signed permanently or if they can keep hold of budding superstar Archie Gray. Now, a decision made 12 months ago could force a financial hit.

Leeds loanee free to leave again

That decision comes regarding midfielder Marc Roca, who was signed during Leeds' time as a Premier League club for a fee of £10m and who became an integral part of the Whites midfield in their final top flight season.

Marc Roca for Leeds United.

However, he was allowed to leave on loan last summer rather than stay to fight for promotion, and the former Bayern Munich midfielder made the move to Real Betis, where he has started 24 times this season. The move was likely sanctioned to help preserve his value for a potential sale this summer, while it also took his £50,000 a week wages off the books at Elland Road.

However, as Roca himself revealed, another clause was inserted which may be set to cost Leeds any money this summer.

“There is a clause like this year. If Leeds is not in the Premier League, I can go on loan again. Let’s see. It depends on whether they go up or not," the Spaniard explained.

“They are things out of my control. I sincerely want you to go up, because I wish all the teams I have been in and wish you the best. I am grateful to them, I wish them the best, it has been my home, and from there we will see.”

Leeds could sign "monster" Kamara replacement who was at Wembley on Sunday

Leeds United will attempt to still get this bold deal over the line despite not winning promotion.

ByKelan Sarson May 28, 2024

And with Leeds having failed to be promoted, a loan move is on the cards again, and local media outlets [via sport witness] reveal that a deal is now "closer than ever", meaning the Whites will miss out on the €12m (£10m) fee a permanent transfer would have netted.

When Roca returns from his second stint away, he will only have 12 months left on his contract at Elland Road, which will likely see the Whites fail to recoup even close to their initial outlay on the Spaniard. All in all, it has turned into a disastrous move for the Yorkshire side from a financial perspective.

Em fim de vínculo com o Barcelona, Messi recebe 'proposta' do Íbis, que faz exigências e lança campanha

After guaranteeing her nation a medal, Smith opened up about new USWNT manager Emma Hayes' contribution to their recent success as she claimed that the former Chelsea manager has completely changed the environment of the dressing room.

  • WHAT SOPHIA SMITH SAID

Speaking to reporters after the semi-final, Smith said: "We’re a different team since she’s come in. She’s so hilarious and chill and funny, and I feel like that’s exactly what we needed. We have the players, we have the talent, we just needed someone to come in and believe in us and put us in the best position to succeed. Emma’s doing exactly that."

    WHAT NEXT FOR USWNT?

After the Olympic final on Saturday, Hayes and her girls will be back in action during the October international break when they take on Iceland in back-to-back friendlies.

Rangers are paying for when Michael Beale let £3m star leave Ibrox

Glasgow Rangers are preparing for the final furlong of the 2023/24 season, with ten important matches left (11 if they reach the Scottish Cup final).

Philippe Clement has done a remarkable job since joining the Ibrox side in mid-October, losing just three games while leading the club to a League Cup triumph and to the last 16 of the Europa League.

It is in the Premiership where the most improvement has been made as Rangers were eight points adrift of Celtic after just seven games.

Michael Beale led the club to three league defeats in their opening seven matches, and he was dismissed following the 3-1 loss to Aberdeen at Ibrox.

This result summarised Beale’s tenure to a tee. A gutless performance by a group of players who delivered yet another woeful display, and it was clear that the Englishman failed to improve his squad during the transfer window.

Former Rangers boss Michael Beale.

Not only did some of his summer signings look downright bizarre (Sam Lammers), but his decision to allow several first-team players to leave for nothing at the end of 2022/23 proved to be a mistake.

Filip Helander was one, as the defender is enjoying a new lease of life at his current club.

How much Rangers paid for Filip Helander

Following a trophyless debut season in charge of Rangers, Steven Gerrard spent the summer of 2019 attempting to bolster his squad to give Celtic a better challenge for the league crown.

New arrivals included Joe Aribo, Ryan Kent, and Steven Davies, while Helander was also signed midway through the transfer window.

Gerrard splashed £3m on the Swedish centre-back to lure him from Bologna as he looked to strengthen his defensive options.

“At £3m, we’ve done really well to get Filip,” said Gerrard. “He naturally gives us balance as a left-footer. That enables us to play with a two or with a back three. He will be able to defend our box and be a threat at set pieces.

“He is comfortable on the ball. He’s a good man, he’s a leader. We do need more voices out there if we want to challenge for the top prizes.”

It didn’t take long for him to make an impact at the Light Blues, forming a solid partnership with Connor Goldson.

Filip Helander’s Rangers career in numbers

Although he only made 18 appearances during his first season, Helander looked assured at the heart of the defence. He suffered a foot injury against Celtic in the League Cup in December 2019 and was ruled out for the rest of the season.

The Swede returned for the 2020/21 campaign, playing 28 games in all competitions as the Gers won their first league title in a decade, conceding just 13 times across 38 league matches.

Helander and Goldson were formidable at the heart of the defence, but this was to be as good as it got for the Swede, as injury problems started to mount.

During his final two seasons, he missed a grand total of 99 games through injury, failing to even make a single senior appearance throughout 2022/23, and he was released when his contract expired last May.

On the surface, it sounded like a logical decision, yet since leaving Ibrox, Helander has found himself a new club and is currently shining abroad.

Where Filip Helander is playing in 2024

During the summer transfer window, Helander made the move to Danish side Odense Boldklub following his release from the Gers, since playing 16 times for the club.

His form in Denmark led to the defender receiving a call-up to the Swedish national side for the first time since 2022, making another four appearances for his country, showing how impressive he had been.

The 30-year-old currently ranks in the top ten players among the squad for accurate passes, accurate long balls, tackles, interceptions and clearances per game, further evidence of his return to form since leaving Glasgow last summer.

Filip Helander's salary in 2024

Offering the defender a one-year deal to prove his fitness might have been an ideal option for Beale, and there is no doubt he fumbled badly on a player who is now earning significantly less than a Gers defender in Ben Davies.

Davies has struggled at Ibrox since joining from Liverpool during the summer of 2022, making 50 appearances for the Light Blues, but failing to really have an impact in the starting XI.

He is certainly not one of Clement’s favourites, as the Englishman has made just four starts under the Belgian and this could very well be his final season in Glasgow, especially if the former Club Brugge manager aims to bring in his own signings.

Ben Davies

Davies is currently picking up a hefty wage of £27k-per-week, which places him as the third-highest earner in the Rangers squad, behind Goldson and James Tavernier.

Considering his form and lack of meaningful impact at the Gers, it is clear that this wage could be more appropriate elsewhere.

Helander, on the other hand, is earning £3.3k-per-week at Odense, as per Salary Sport, and this represents a massive difference from what Davies is taking home every week.

There is no doubt that when both players are fully fit, Helander is the better of the two, yet injury problems wrecked his spell at Rangers and meant he failed to enjoy the sendoff that he really deserved.

Testament to his character, however, as he has managed to get himself back to full fitness and secure a return to the national team late last year.

Helander would have been an excellent option for Clement to call upon rather than Davies, especially when fixture congestion was looking like it could derail their ambitions a few months ago.

At his peak, the Swede regularly delivered solid and reliable performances for Rangers, with Gerrard being able to trust the player in a variety of situations without having to worry about the club conceding.

Having signed a one-year deal with Odense last summer, could Helander potentially be back on the move again at the end of the current season? Only time will tell.

Star sold by Newcastle is now a "remarkable" £100m machine

With Newcastle United's recent injury crisis, it has allowed Eddie Howe to give multiple youngsters valuable first-team minutes in the Premier League.

Lewis Miley is a player who's taken his first-team opportunity, with the 17-year-old making 16 appearances for the Magpies in the top flight this campaign.

The talented midfielder even scored his first goal in the 3-0 win against Fulham, making him the club's youngest-ever goalscorer in the Premier League.

Although he's not featured as often as Miley, midfielder Elliot Anderson is another Academy graduate who has often featured under Howe this season, with the former Bristol Rovers loanee making 10 appearances – most of which from the substitutes bench.

Given the trust in Newcastle's young players this season, the club may regret selling a former academy player who has gone on to achieve unbelievable things in the Premier League throughout the last few seasons.

Ivan Toney's stats at Newcastle United

After arriving at St James' Park from Northampton Town back in 2015, 18-year-old Ivan Toney made his debut during the 4-1 League Cup victory over his former side.

The striker eventually joined Barnsley for two separate loan spells, where he made a combined 21 appearances, scoring two goals in his first taste of League One football.

He followed his loan move to Oakwell with loan spells at Shrewsbury Town, Wigan Athletic, and Scunthorpe United, amassing a tally of 28 goals in England's third-tier, before returning to St James' Park in the summer of 2018.

Despite his successful loan spells away from the club, Newcastle agreed to sell Toney to Peterborough United for a fee in the region of £350k, with the Magpies placing a 30% sell-on fee within the transfer.

Ivan Toney's stats since leaving Newcastle United

His move to Peterborough was the start of the striker's rapid rise through the Football League and into the Premier League.

Toney spent two successful seasons at Posh, with the former Newcastle forward making 94 appearances in all competitions, bagging himself 49 goals – a tally that caught the eye of Championship side Brentford.

He joined Brentford in a deal rising to £10m with add-ons – a deal that looks to be a bargain given his form for the Bees in the Championship and Premier League.

The striker took the Championship by storm, scoring 31 times for the Bees in the season they gained promotion to the Premier League for the first time in the club's history.

Toney's tally that season broke the Championship record for most goals in a 46-game season until it was broken by Fulham's Aleksander Mitrovic just a year later.

The striker continued his brilliant form in the Premier League under Thomas Frank, scoring 12 times in his first Premier League campaign. However, it was his second season that brought all the attention to Toney for on and off-the-field reasons.

The "remarkable" forward, as dubbed by manager Frank, scored 20 times for the Bees but was hit with an FA charge for breaking betting rules that would see him serve an eight-month ban from all competitions.

His first game back from his ban was in the 3-2 victory over Nottingham Forest, with Toney scoring and claiming the Player of the Match award.

Since his return, he has been linked to the likes of Chelsea and Arsenal this summer, amid reports that his club value him at up to £100m, with the Magpies missing out on a deal that would've brought them a clinical Premier League striker, but also an exceptional profit.

Therefore, Newcastle had a mare with the sale of Toney as they let him for £350k, and he is now valued at significantly more than that, at £100m.
