Liverpool scouting new goalscorer to replace star who saved them vs Saints

Liverpool are gathering information on one of Europe’s top goalscorers this season as a possible replacement for Darwin Nunez, according to a new report.

Liverpool set for a hectic summer

Despite Liverpool storming towards the Premier League title and going strong in the Champions League, much of the current talk around the club surrounds what will happen this summer in the transfer window.

The Reds’ star trio of Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk are all out of contract at the end of the season, and none have yet to pen to paper on new deals. The future of back-up goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher, who has asserted his desire to leave Anfield, is also up in the air, as is that of striker Darwin Nunez.

Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez

The Uruguayan striker has been publicly criticised in recent weeks by manager Arne Slot, and is widely expected to leave Liverpool in the summer, three seasons after he joined the club from Benfica for a record fee of £84 million.

Since the move, Nunez has scored just 40 goals in 133 games, with the 40th of those coming in a match-winning performance against Southampton on Saturday, as he equalised shortly after half-time before winning a penalty moments later.

Liverpool are understood to be monitoring a number of players to replace Nunez, including Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak, Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Matheus Cunha, and RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko, the latter of whom they have been reported to have already made contact over.

According to a report from The Boot Room, Liverpool have opened talks to sign the Leipzig star, who is also attracting interest from a number of Premier League clubs, including Chelsea.

Liverpool eyeing Atalanta's Mateo Retegui

Another striker reportedly on Liverpool’s shortlist to replace Nunez is Atalanta’s Mateo Retegui. The Italy international, 25, is the top scorer in Serie A this season, having netted 21 goals in 25 games for Gian Piero Gasperini’s side with a further three in the Champions League.

His impressive return this term sees him currently sit joint-second in the race for the European Golden Shoe alongside Barcelona’s Robert Lewandowski, who he boasts extremely similar attributes to.

According to Rousing the Kop, Liverpool have been gathering information on Retegui ahead of a potential summer swoop, with Slot adamant on signing a new centre-forward ahead of his second season in charge.

Retegui, who only joined Atalanta last summer from Genoa last summer, has been heavily praised by Italy manager Luciano Spalletti, who has made him a regular for the Azzurri since taking over as head coach in 2023.

“He’s a very serious lad,” Spalletti said of the striker back in October, according to The Guardian. “Inside the box, he is lethal. And now he has learned how to connect with the team better. He’s going to become a top player.”

McCoist left stunned on-air after hearing new Rangers manager suggestion

Rangers legend Ally McCoist has been left stunned by the mention of a potential permanent manager at Ibrox, given his track record in the game.

Rangers searching for permanent manager

Barry Ferguson is currently in interim charge of the Gers, which has proven to be a popular appointment with many supporters, even though there are doubts over his lack of experience managing at this level.

Journalist Pete O’Rourke has claimed that the 47-year-old could still be given the role permanently if he impresses enough between now and the end of the season, helped by the fact that he is “already well-backed by the Ibrox crowd thanks to his previous spell as Rangers’ club captain.”

Steven Gerrard also continues to be mentioned as a possible dream appointment for likely new owners 49ers Enterprises, as they edge towards sealing their takeover of the club. The Liverpool legend won the Scottish Premiership title during his first stint there, and may like the idea of making a return.

Kevin Muscat is another potential option for the Gers, with the Australian currently in charge of Chinese side Shanghai Port. Another former Ibrox player, he could be a more experienced option than Ferguson.

McCoist stunned by Rangers manager suggestion

Speaking live on talkSPORT’s breakfast show on Monday [via Glasgow World], McCoist reacted to the idea of Rafa Benitez managing Rangers in shock, after Jeff Stelling read out the suggestion of the Spaniard moving to Glasgow: “I’m a bit speechless. You’ve beat me with that. The only thing he would need, the same as (Ruben) Amorim at Manchester United, is a better squad of players to deal with at this moment of time.”

Meanwhile, Stelling then continued to go into further depth about why the former Liverpool and Real Madrid boss could be the ideal pick to arrive at Ibrox this summer: “He’s got loads of experience, he’s got European experience, top level experience, and he is available.”

Everton's former manager Rafael Benitez.

Benitez is a manager with genuine pedigree, so it is understandable why McCoist was “speechless” at the idea of Rangers snapping him up as their next boss.

The Spaniard famously won the Champions League with Liverpool back in 2005, beating a star-studded AC Milan side in a memorable final, and he even won the Europa League with Chelsea in 2013, despite being unpopular with many of their supporters because of his Anfield past.

A shrewd tactician with so much experience, Benitez could help bridge the gap between Rangers and Celtic, and if he is backed by the 49ers in the summer transfer window, he could bring in players who are perfectly suited to his style of play.

Whether the 64-year-old is a target remains to be seen, but there are clear merits to the Gers at least trying their luck, and he may like the idea of managing another huge British club.

Brighton now very keen on double swoop for Championship "top prospects"

Brighton & Hove Albion are now very keen on a double swoop for two “top prospects” from the Championship, according to a report.

Brighton eyeing talented youngsters

Brighton’s model is built around buying up-and-coming players before selling them on for a huge fee, doing so successfully on many occasions in the past, with the likes of Moises Caicedo and Marc Cucurella completing big-money moves to Chelsea.

Ahead of the summer transfer window, the Seagulls continue to look at young players who are impressing across Europe, with Hertha BSC attacking midfielder Ibrahim Maza thought to be of interest after catching the eye in the Bundesliga II.

Fabian Hurzeler’s side were also keen on signing Sunderland youngster Tommy Watson in the January transfer window, but they missed out, meaning West Bromwich Albion’s Tom Fellows has now been identified as a potential alternative target.

Brighton appear to be scouring the Championship for future stars, with a report from The Boot Room revealing they are now very keen on a double swoop for Middlesbrough starlets Bailey and Anton Palmer.

The teenage twins are viewed as two of the most exciting players in their age category, and they have recently been named in the England U17 squad, with Premier League clubs now lining up to get deals done.

Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur are also keen on the Middlesbrough duo, with the race for their signatures now starting to hot up ahead of the summer.

Both players have received regular game time for Middlesbrough U18s this season, and Bailey has even been named on the bench for two first-team fixtures, highlighting just how highly he is regarded by the Teesside club.

Brighton could be the perfect move for the Palmer twins

Although Tottenham and Chelsea are traditionally bigger clubs, Brighton have a proven track record of integrating young players in the first team.

Caicedo was provided with a platform to develop his game at the American Express Stadium before joining Chelsea, while this season Carlos Baleba and Jack Hinshelwood are among the young midfielders to receive regular game time.

Consistent first-team football may be difficult to come by at Stamford Bridge, given the Blues’ already bloated squad, while Spurs were also extremely busy in the January transfer window.

As such, joining the Seagulls could make perfect sense for the young midfield duo, as there is a far higher chance they will receive first-team football over the next few years.

Should Brighton win the race for the Palmer twins, there are plenty of indications they could be long-term successes on the South Coast, having been described as “top prospects” by transfer expert Graeme Bailey.

An accomplished century from Rob Yates lifted Warwickshire to a thrilling four-run Royal London Cup win over Sussex at Edgbaston. The victory extended the Bears’ unbeaten start to the group campaign while leaving Sussex with a second defeat to go with their two wins.Warwickshire were lifted to a meaty 314 for six by Yates’ second List A ton, 114 from 111 balls, supported by aggressive knocks from Will Rhodes (76, 70) and Michael Burgess (58, 51). Bradley Currie led Sussex’s bowling with two for 51 while Aristides Karvelas picked up two late wickets to end with two for 44.Sussex’s gallant reply fell short on 306 for seven despite Cheteshwar Pujara’s classy century (107, 79) and Ali Orr’s 81 (102) as Krunal Pandya took three for 51, George Garrett two for 50 and Olly Hannon-Dalby two for 55.After choosing to bat, Warwickshire were given a sound platform with an opening stand of 69 in 15 overs between Yates and Hamza Shaikh. Sixteen-year-old Bears product Shaikh looked comfortable on his debut before he was run out when Yates called for a very sharp single.Related

Rhodes raced to a 53-ball half-century against a Sussex attack that stuck to their task well in perfect batting conditions and intense heat. With Yates anchoring the innings skilfully, the second wicket added 131 in 19 overs before Rhodes, having just scooped Henry Crocombe for six, ladled the next ball to deep square leg.At 235 for two from 39 overs, Warwickshire were well-placed to go huge but a brake was applied by an excellent over from Currie. He dislodged Yates with one that nipped away to take the edge and, two balls later, dismissed Pandya for a duck in similar fashion.Burgess smote three fours and three sixes vigorous to ensure that his former team would have to chase over 300: a substantial target but about par in the conditions.Sussex’s reply was briskly launched by their young top order. Orr advanced to a 67-ball half-century supported by perky cameos from Harrison Ward (24, 36) and Clark (30, 43) before both chipped catches up to the infield.Orr was closing in on his second List A century when he pulled Pandya to deep square leg. When Tom Alsop chipped Garrett to mid-wicket, Sussex were leaning heavily on Pujara as they started the last ten overs needing 102.Delray Rawlings slog-swept Pandya to deep square and Danial Ibrahim sliced Garrett to backward point but Pujara raced from 50 to 100 in just 22 balls, taking 22 off a Liam Norwell over, to keep Sussex in the game. They needed 20 from the last two overs but, from the first of those 12 balls, Pujara was yorked by Hannon-Halby. A composed last over from Garrett concluded with Karvelas needing to hit the final ball for six – he managed just a single to resounding cheers from a big crowd which had richly enjoyed a fine match.

The U.S. men's national team held steady at No. 16 in the latest iteration of FIFA's worldwide rankings despite losing back-to-back games in Pochettino's first competitive fixtures in charge.

Their coefficient increased narrowly – largely thanks to their form in January camp, when Pochettino's side won two on the bounce.

Mexico moved up two spots to No. 17 after lifting the CONCACAF Nations League title, while runners-up Panama also climbed three spots to No. 33. After defeating the USMNT in the third-place match, Canada moved up one spot to No. 30, their highest-ever ranking.

Man Utd may use Rashford in January swap deal to sign "dominant" £62m star

With Marcus Rashford frozen out and – by his own admission – looking for a new challenge, Manchester United could reportedly attempt to form a swap deal using the Carrington graduate to sign a star striker this month.

Man Utd transfer news

Just how it got to this point is difficult to say. Rashford has been involved in Manchester United’s plans no matter who’s been in charge since breaking into the senior side many moons ago. Ruben Amorim has opted out of following the trend, however, to instead swing the door open to send the academy graduate on his way in ruthless fashion.

In the space of a week, Rashford was dropped for the Manchester derby, in which replacement Amad Diallo scored the winning goal, and revealed his desire for a new challenge away from Old Trafford. Since then, the England international has made Amorim’s squad just once as an unused substitute in defeat against Newcastle United last time out.

Man Utd favorites to sign £80m "monster" who'd dazzle alongside Amad

Man United could make a January move for a player who’d shine next to Amad Diallo.

ByJoe Nuttall Jan 3, 2025

It speaks volumes that even with Manchester United edging alarmingly close to a Premier League relegation battle, Rashford has remained unused and needs to depart.

With that said and the January transfer window now open, he could get his wish. According to The Sun, Manchester United could use Rashford in a swap deal to sign Victor Osimhen as early as this month. The Napoli forward has a release clause of £62m, which the Red Devils could bypass by offering the Serie A giants the chance to sign an instant replacement.

In between those potential negotiations, meanwhile, Napoli would have to cut Osimhen’s loan spell at Galatasaray short in what may not be without its own complications.

They are complications that would be worthwhile on United’s end, however, given that they’d finally welcome a reliable goalscorer and a potential upgrade on Rashford, who is wanted by Antonio Conte at Napoli.

"Dominant" Osimhen would hand Man Utd much-needed star power

When looking at Manchester United’s strongest stars, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to spot a standout player who is capable of dragging them to victory.

Bruno Fernandes creates the strongest case for being that player, but his disciplinary record taints his reliability. Meanwhile, Diallo is still on the cusp of his potential, as is Rasmus Hojlund. And that is arguably it – especially when it comes to attacking stars – in a shock reality for one of England’s biggest clubs.

The Red Devils simply must welcome a player of Osimhen’s calibre to reignite the spark in their frontline and the seven point gap between themselves and the dropzone suggests that they can’t hold out until the summer transfer window. Dubbed “dominant” by analyst Ben Mattinson, Osimhen should be among United’s priorities this month.

With 12 goals and five assists in just 15 games for Galatasaray so far this season, Osimhen remains one to watch in the January transfer window.
