Wolves receive Hwang update

Wolves have revealed the latest information in forward Hee-Chan Hwang’s recovery from a thigh injury, and it certainly looks positive.

What’s the latest?

The RB Leipzig loanee has been out of action since mid-December with a thigh injury and had started life at Molineux impressively, scoring four goals in his first six league appearances.

Although the goals had dried up slightly prior to suffering his injury, the South Korean was a regular fixture in Bruno Lage’s side and his return will be very welcome.ÂThat return, in fact, could come in the coming weeks.

On their official Twitter page, Wolves shared a video of Hwang addressing fans and providing an update on his fitness.

The 25-year-old said: “After the injury, I am recovering well and have started jogging and training.

“I will try my best to show my best performance to the fans. Thank you for your support.”

According to Premier Injuries, 10 Februrary is currently the estimated date for the South Korean’s return to action.

Wolves fans will be buzzing

Although the West Midlands outfit are sat comfortably in eighth place with hopes of a push towards the top-six, goals have been at a shortage for the entirety of their campaign.

Having scored just 17 goals in 20 league games, Lage’s side are the Premier League’s third-lowest scorers, therefore the return of Hwang will be welcome indeed.

When fit, the 25-year-old was mainly operating on the left-hand side of a front-three, a position that has seen various personnel fill in over the course of the campaign.

The likes of Daniel Podence, Franciso Trincão and Adama Traore have all started on the left-hand side on occasion this season, despite their preference being the right. However, the trio have just one league goal between them.

Who to play either side of striker Raúl Jiménez has been a headache for the Portuguese manager at times this term, particularly during the absence of the South Korean, meaning that his return can’t come soon enough.

Moreover, prior to his injury there was talk of the Black Country club swooping to turn the Leipzig-loanee’s loan deal permanent, given the fact that the winger hadn’t been getting much of a look in at the Bundesliga outfit.

Hee-Chan Hwang’s return from injury will be a major boost as Wolves look to close the gap between them and the top-six.

Everton could play Calvert-Lewin v Burnley

Loads of Everton fans were reacting to some early team news that has emerged ahead of their game away at Burnley in the Premier League on Boxing Day.

As per Patrick Boyland, Dominic Calvert-Lewin has said that he is now ‘hoping’ to return from injury against the Clarets at Turf Moor, in what The Athletic journalist claims would be a ‘boost’ for the Goodison Park faithful.

The striker has been out injured since August, and scored three goals in his first three games of the season (Transfermarkt). This, added to the 21 goals that he managed as the Merseyside club’s top scorer last term, shows just how important he is to the team, and so to have him back would be a big welcome.

However, with a longer term injury, some Toffees supporters are cautious that he is not rushed back, and are just hopeful that he is fit enough to play some part.

Crystal Palace: Vieira must keep Gallagher

Crystal Palace have enjoyed a comfortable campaign so far after appointing Patrick Vieira in the summer.

The manager has made a number of new additions to the side that have made a great impact on their good form in the first half of the season, resulting in Palace currently sitting 11th in the Premier League table after finishing 14th for the last two seasons.

The London club have taken points from 13 of the 20 games they have played, with eight draws and five wins in the league, and we expect Vieira will be hoping to continue to climb the table in his first full season in charge of the Eagles, to secure the side’s first top-half finish since 2015 when they finished 10th.

One player who has stolen the show at Palace and has been drawing attention to himself through his outstanding performances is loan player, Conor Gallagher.

The 21-year-old has been fantastic this season after he joined Palace on a season-long loan from Chelsea in the summer, scoring six goals and bagging three assists.

He has found the net against Manchester City and Wolves, as well as scoring a brace against West Ham and Everton in the Premier League so far from his midfield position.

Eagles manager, Vieira, praised and reflected on the incredible progress of the young midfielder at Palace so far speaking after the 3-1 win over Everton where he scored a brace.

‘He wants to improve, he is really humble, is working hard and the challenge for him is to maintain that level to fulfil his expectation.

‘Today he was fantastic and I think when the team play at that level as well, it allows him and some of the players in the team to express themselves.”

Now, the French manager could have a problem on his hands as the January transfer window has opened and Gallagher’s position in the team may be compromised by a recall from Chelsea, due to ongoing issues with the attacking line at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea are struggling to keep themselves in contention for the Premier League title this season, with Manchester City now ten points clear of Thomas Tuchel’s side.

The downfall in Chelsea’s title chase has come from four draws from their last five games, compared to Manchester City’s five wins from five, and some of the attacking players in the side have come under fire after failing to hit the ground running.

Last week, an interview with Romelu Lukaku surfaced where the £100m record-breaking Chelsea signing claimed he was “not happy” with the system Tuchel had deployed, but has since apologised.

With the issues at Chelsea mounting due to their disappointing results as of late, virus outbreaks, injuries and desperation to get back on track to continue to compete for the title this season, there is reason to believe they could look to their thriving loan player at Crystal Palace to save their campaign with his proven attacking threat in the second half of the season.

However, if the Blues take the frightening decision to bring him back to the Bridge this month, it could derail Palace’s own season. After all, he is their top scorer this term and joint-chief creator too.

Gallagher has not featured in the last two games for Vieira’s side, but assistant manager, Osian Roberts, has claimed that he is simply missing through an attempt to “keep the squad as fresh as possible”, Palace will take on Millwall away in the FA Cup third round on Saturday and it will be interesting to see if the youngster features.

Ings out for Villa vs Man City

As confirmed by Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard, his side will be without striker Danny Ings – with the player also sidelined alongside Bertrand Traore and Trezeguet ahead of Man City tonight.

The Lowdown: Gerrard era begins…

It has been a fine start to the Liverpool legend’s managerial career in the Midlands with Gerrard so far amassing a 100% win rate over his first two matches in charge.

Victories against Brighton and Crystal Palace have cemented a dream start for the 41-year-old but fixtures are about to come quick, fast and in greater difficulty.

Next up, the Villans take on Premier League champions and 2021/2022 title chasers Man City at Villa Park this evening and Gerrard has now confirmed that he will be without another player alongside Trezeguet and Traore.

The Latest: Gerrard confirms Ings ‘setback’…

As explained by Gerrard, summer signing Ings will not be available for the City clash tonight due to suffering an injury setback, coming after he made the bench against Palace.

Danny, unfortunately, won’t make Man City. We were protecting him at the weekend,” he said (via Birmingham Live).

“He’s had a little bit of a setback – a previous injury – nothing major, but we had to put the brakes on for a few days at the least.”

“So there’ll be one change in the squad – Keinan Davis will replace Danny Ings, the rest is as it was the last time.”

The Verdict: Blow for Gerrard…

Being without the 29-year-old for this evening will come as a dampener for Villa as they seek to maintain their brilliant run of form since Gerrard’s arrival at the club.

Lauded as a ‘phenomenal’ striker by pundit Frank McAvennie, the Villans could have done with the addition of another option up front and alternative threat.

Out of Villa’s entire squad, Ings is also their joint top-scorer and joint-highest provider of assists in the Premier League (WhoScored) – outlining just how useful he can be when available.

His sublime overhead kick against Newcastle United earlier this campaign highlights an obvious forward threat and Villa certainly could have done with that injection of quality today.

Leeds: Phillips has successful operation

Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips has undergone a successful operation on his hamstring injury, according to journalist David Ornstein.

The Lowdown: Phillips injury blow

The Whites have suffered a massive blow regarding one of their most valuable players, with the 25-year-old set to be sidelined for a couple of months.

A hamstring issue will leave Leeds without Phillips for a crucial period of the season, as Marcelo Bielsa’s men look to stave off the threat of a relegation battle.

While it is hard to find too many positives regarding the situation, one crumb of comfort has emerged from Ornstein.

The Latest: Ornstein offers crumb of comfort

Taking to Twitter on Monday, as well as sharing his article for The Athletic, the journalist confirmed in a six-word verdict that Phillips’ operation has been a success, which hopefully means his spell on the sidelines won’t be as long as initially feared.

Ornstein rounded off his tweet by saying: “Operation thought to have been successful.”

The Verdict: Midfielder needed

Leeds arguably needed a new central midfielder in January even if Phillips were fit, but this news has only heightened the need for one to be brought in.

The Whites cannot expect to win Premier League games consistently with the current options at Bielsa’s disposal, especially considering that Adam Forshaw has only recently returned from two years out with a hip injury.

Someone like Cagliari’s Nahitan Nandez would be ideal – he has been strongly linked with Leeds in recent months – with the Uruguayan outperforming Phillips for both key passes (1.1 v 0.6) and dribbles (1.6 v 0.3) in their respective leagues this season.

A predicted QPR XI ahead of Cardiff City

Queens Park Rangers will be aiming to return to winning ways when they take on an out-of-form Cardiff City in their Championship clash this evening.

Mark Warburton’s charges have failed to secure a victory in any of their last three outings in all competitions, although they did put in a much-improved performance against Nottingham Forest last time out.

An injury-time strike from Jack Colback denied the Hoops all three points on Friday, but that bitter blow wasn’t the only damage done at the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium.

Wing-back Sam McCallum and central defender Jordy de Wijs left the field in the first half due to injury concerns, and the pair may be forced to watch tonight’s clash from the sidelines as a result.

With that in mind, here’s how Football FanCast expects Warburton to line up at the Cardiff City Stadium, with only two changes from the side that started against Forest…

Senegal international goalkeeper Seny Dieng is set to keep his place between the sticks after a solid start to the season, and it’s set to be a familiar back-three ahead of him.

With de Wijs potentially absent through injury, Warburton is likely to select Rob Dickie, Jimmy Dunne and Yoann Barbet from the off as the capital club go looking for their first league clean sheet in two games.

The engine room could be where the game is won and lost in Wales, and therefore, the £810,000-rated Andre Dozzell may make way for the more defensive-minded Dominic Ball in what would be a big call by the manager.

Completing the midfield setup is likely to be Albert Adomah, Moses Odubajo and club captain Stefan Johansen.

In attack, Ilias Chair and Chris Willock then feature just behind lone striker Lyndon Dykes who deserves to feature after finding the net last time out.

Leeds: Phillips a shining light vs Spurs

Leeds United’s poor form in 2021/22 continued on Sunday afternoon as they were narrowly beaten by Tottenham Hotspur.

It means Marcelo Bielsa’s side still occupy the one spot above the relegation zone and are just two points adrift after another disappointing result amid their worrying injury problems.

The Whites largely dominated the first half and by full-time, they still led the possession and attempts on goal statistics but they just couldn’t get going again in the final 45 minutes.

Jack Harrison found his wide companion Daniel James one minute before the break with a low-driven cross after beating home defender Emerson Royal all ends up with a nutmeg.

However, it was Kalvin Phillips, who surprisingly dropped into the backline that was Bielsa’s one silver lining down in north London.

As per SofaScore, he recorded the most touches of anyone on the pitch (113) and that goes to show his influence on the side, as well as the game – everything ran through him as he was like an American quarterback – that’ll please the 49ers’ group if they were watching.

Similarly, no player managed more passes either (76), in which a whopping seven were successful long balls as he sprayed it all over the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Elsewhere, he was an absolute rock in his unfamiliar central defensive role, recording four tackles, three interceptions and three blocks, on top of winning six ground duels, via SofaScore.

The Daily Star’s Paul Brown was left impressed by the England international, too, having described him as an “absolute Rolls-Royce” before suggesting that he “ran the show” in north London.

Meanwhile, LeedsLive’s Beren Cross also spoke glowingly about the £36m-rated powerhouse in his post-game ratings column.

‘Immense in the first half when he was given a man-marking job on Harry Kane. Took the match by the scruff of the neck. Not as central after the break when he went into midfield. Cut a frustrated figure at times,’ he wrote.

Phillips was absolutely class against Spurs and arguably deserved something from the game as a result of his performance. If there are any small positives for Bielsa to take, then he’s certainly one.

Amid new head of recruitment Rob Newman’s search for a back-up option to Michail Antonio, there have been no shortage of names linked.

Indeed, they also claim West Ham have ‘already positioned themselves’ to sign Lacazette – who has been described as a ‘big’ player by managar Mikel Arteta.

Masi drops fresh West Brom transfer claim

West Bromwich Albion have lodged a complaint to FIFA regarding an unpaid transfer fee.

What’s the latest?

In a recent report for the Express & Star, Joseph Masi revealed that West Brom are yet to receive the full transfer fee for the £2.5m sale of centre-back Ahmed Hegazi, who joined Saudi Arabian side Al-Ittihad Jeddah this summer.

Masi added that, despite it being unknown exactly how much of the fee remains outstanding, Al-Ittihad have disputed the figure, something which has led to the Baggies raising the issue with FIFA in order to find a resolution.

Finally, it is said that West Brom hope to receive an answer from the governing body this week, which could lead to Valerien Ismael receiving an injection of cash ahead of the January transfer window.

Fans will be buzzing

The situation surrounding Hegazi’s unpaid transfer fee is obviously far from ideal for West Brom, but should FIFA decree that Al-Ittihad owe them a significant fee for the defender, and this fee is paid ahead of the winter market, there would appear to be a rather significant silver lining for Ismael.

Indeed, with the 46-year-old recently stating that he is already working towards a number of deals in January, the potential of receiving a substantial amount of money prior to the transfer window’s opening would undoubtedly come as a major boost for the Frenchman, who would certainly welcome an injection of cash in order to rejuvenate his squad.

With West Brom already involved in what looks to be a fiercely-contested race for a top two finish this season, the possibility of having slightly more money to spend this winter could well make all the difference in the Championship standings come next May, while the potential of bringing in a fresh face or two is also sure to have The Hawthorns faithful buzzing.
