West Ham fans buzzing over Carvalho update

Flocking to Twitter, many West Ham United fans have been left pleading for the signing of Fulham forward Fabio Carvalho after an update from reliable in-the-know insider ExWHUemployee.

Hammers boss David Moyes is thought to be keen on the 19-year-old Championship starlet alongside a host of other Premier League clubs, with Southampton, Tottenham and Liverpool also said to be watching on (TEAMtalk).

Fulham hold fears that he has already agreed to move away from Craven Cottage, with the talented teenager still yet to pen a contract extension in west London (TEAMtalk).

As things stand, the winger can leave as a free agent in the summer, and Ex believes that West Ham could well be in contention.

According to the insider, via his West Ham Way website, Carvalho is personally seen by Moyes as an alternative to long-time target Jesse Lingard, whose apparent recent comments about his future caused some consternation among the east London fan base.

While a move is more likely in the summer when the 19-year-old is a free agent, ExWHUemployee refuses to rule out the possibility of a late January swoop, believing that the story ‘could change’.

West Ham fans plead for Carvalho…

Taking to Twitter, many West Ham fans have pleaded with the club to sign the talented teenager after this insider claim, and it’s not hard to see why.

Dubbed a ‘very exciting’ player by one-time Premier League Golden Boot winner Kevin Phillips, Carvalho’s eight goals and two assists in 17 Championship appearances for Fulham highlight his sky-high potential. For a cheaper fee or on a Bosman in the summer, this potential move is certainly enough to excite the Irons faithful.

Adams gives Hampshire hope

Jimmy Adams’ tentative 60 edged Hampshire into a narrow 148-run lead at the Rose Bowl as they bid to avoid a sixth straight domestic defeat of the season

06-May-2010
ScorecardJimmy Adams’ tentative 60 edged Hampshire into a narrow 148-run lead at the Rose Bowl as they bid to avoid a sixth straight domestic defeat of the season. Adams was the only Hampshire batsmen to make a significant impact on the scorecard as Samit Patel’s two wickets left Nottinghamshire in a strong position to avoid defeat and maintain their strong start to the County Championship Division One season.Nottinghamshire allrounder Steven Mullaney had earlier taken the away side past Hampshire’s first innings total with a sturdy unbeaten 100, ably supported by Paul Franks’ 48 from 90 deliveries. Mullaney frustrated the home attack, taking the game to Hampshire and striking 12 boundaries during his century.Mullaney and tailender Franks put on 79 for the eighth wicket before the latter was trapped lbw by Dominic Cork with the Hampshire veteran then cleaning up the tail with the wickets of Darren Pattinson and Charlie Shreck to dismiss them for 329 and claim figures of 4 for 34.Hampshire began positively with in-form Michael Carberry looking to add to his first innings haul of 132 – and he and Adams looked in good shape building an encouraging first-wicket stand. However the England batsman nicked a swinging delivery from Pattinson to wicketkeeper Chris Read with Hampshire just five runs ahead – and you could almost feel the nerves enveloping around the Rose Bowl.Chris Benham did little to quell those fears with an underwhelming 18 from 44 balls, failing to find the boundary rope before he was removed lbw by Samit Patel, unable to judge a well-pitched delivery from the spinner. At the other end Adams kept his head with some fine drives and intelligent pinch-hitting to keep the score ticking over.He lost another partner when South African Neil McKenzie again failed to deliver on his return to England as he edged a quick Shreck delivery to Read for another disappointing score of just 12. Adams’ resolve lasted until the 49th over when he popped one up to BilalShafayat in the field from Patel and the collapse continued with Nottinghamshire eyeing a total below 200 to win.Thankfully for the hosts the experienced head of Nic Pothas (29 not out) and teenager James Vince (29 not out) glued together a 50-run partnership inside 30 gruelling overs at the end of the day’s play just when it was needed.

Classic catches, and a failed experiment

Cricinfo presents the Plays of the day from the match between Delhi Daredevils and Royal Challengers Bangalore

Jamie Alter at the Feroz Shah Kotla04-Apr-2010On the dime
Confidence is coursing through Anil Kumble’s veins at present. Today, after losing the toss on a flat track, he decided to open the bowling against two devastating batsmen. David Warner was away first ball with a tucked single to square, bringing Virender Sehwag – short of a few runs – on strike. Kumble began with a flipper on the pads which Sehwag failed to connect with. Sehwag missed the second ball while attempting a feisty drive. The third had some flight on it and he drove straight to a fielder. The fifth too was unable to pierce the strong off-side field and the sixth yielded just a single toward deep cover. That was a top over from a veteran slow bowler against two men who feast on spin.Six and out
No reference to the band that Brett Lee used to be part of. Abhimanyu Mithun’s career has progressed rapidly over the past season, with a superb debut Ranji Trophy season leading to an ODI cap. He hadn’t been a part of his home city’s IPL side until this evening, and the young quick made an immediate impact. Not with his first ball, however, which Sehwag carved over six, but with his second. Mithun pulled back the length and got the short ball to follow Sehwag, who for the umpteenth time in his career ended up chopping it onto his stumps. Mithun let out a roar that matched what the Kotla faithful had been bellowing during Sehwag’s all too brief cameo.Throwdown
Royal Challengers Bangalore’s second draft for this match also made his presence felt early in the piece, contributing to send back the other dangerous local Delhi batsman. Warner got cramped by a Jacques Kallis delivery and bunted it to toward cover, where KP Appanna – another hometown boy – ran in and took out the stumps with a direct hit to run-out Gautam Gambhir. One for the classic catches series
Dinesh Karthik’s eyes would have lit up when he saw a wide and short ball from Appanna. He wouldn’t have known, though, that when he smashed that one towards cover, Cameron White would fling himself to his left, get to the ball with both hands, and bring off a stunning catch very low to the ground.A experiment gone awry
Unfortunately for Bangalore, White was nowhere as sharp when he was given the ball right after that catch. There’s a reason why White hasn’t bowled himself much during Victoria’s domestic season. Ricky Ponting also hasn’t turned to him when he’s played limited-overs for Australia of late, and even White seemed a bit surprised that Kumble had picked him to deliver the 12th over. His third ball was so wide outside off that Steve Harmison would have laughed, and when White sent down some embarrassing half-trackers Paul Collingwood thumped two sixes and a four to round off a potentially game-changing 19-run over. That’s one experiment we won’t be seeing any more of.What a letdown
White got a chance to redeem himself when he was promoted to open with Kallis, but he barely managed to get into first gear. After facing eight deliveries for just four singles, and swiping and swishing plenty, White finally connected to one. Up over cover it went, and settled into the specialist long-off Warner’s hands.Slow coach
One can understand that Kallis, the leading run scorer this season, had been instructed to bat out the innings but what was Kevin Pietersen doing? He could not time the ball off the square and indulged in singles against some disciplined bowling from Delhi’s medium-pacer pair of Rajat Bhatia and Pradeep Sangwan. After scratching his way to 16 off 18 balls, Pietersen was put out of his misery on the 19th – a lovely yorker from Sangwan that crashed into the stumps.Men at work
Time was when a running catch on the edge of the cricket field used to get the adrenalin pumping. But in this time of Twenty20, it’s not just cool to take a catch on the run. You have to give it your damndest. What R Sathish, Angelo Mathews and Adam Voges did in the ICL and international Twenty20s over the past two seasons has become all the rage in the IPL. David Hussey and Doug Bollinger pulled off incredible leaping, relaying and parried catches this week and today Warner tried and just failed to become the third Aussie to add one to the collection. He leapt back to try and catch a big hit from Kallis, lost balance, lobbed the ball up, balanced himself and took the catch but immediately signaled that he was not sure whether his back foot had made contact with the rope. Replays showed that it indeed had, and Warner shrugged his shoulder. But it truly is a sign of the times when such efforts are being made with regularity.

PCB sends legal notice to Mickey Arthur

The PCB has sent a legal notice to Mickey Arthur, who suggested that an ODI between Pakistan and South Africa in 2007 had “a strong suspicion of match-fixing” around it

Osman Samiuddin08-Nov-2010The Pakistan Cricket Board has sent a legal notice to former South Africa coach Mickey Arthur, asking him to respond within seven days about comments he made recently, suggesting that an ODI between Pakistan and South Africa in 2007 had “a strong suspicion of match-fixing” around it.The PCB had issued a statement last Friday expressing concern over Arthur’s comments and indicated that legal action would be taken. Arthur has since said his words were taken out of context, but the same claims are set to be made in his soon-to-be published autobiography. That might now cause further problems. In the legal notice, a copy of which is with ESPNcricinfo, the PCB finds it “extremely startling” that Arthur has said this more than three years after the ODI. “They [the PCB] have reason to believe that such scandalizing statements have been made by you inter alia to “sell” your biography.” The notice concludes that without any proof, the claims and allegations are “whimsical, frivolous, defamatory, disparaging, denigrating, libelous, slanderous and derogatory.”Arthur has been directed to “unconditionally and publicly retract” the statement and offer an “unqualified and unconditional apology” for the allegations. Pertinently, as far as the publication of the book is concerned, the board has asked for a written undertaking that no such statements will be made publicly again and “that your biography will not contain such or similar libels and disparaging statements against the Pakistan team or any of its members.”The PCB has also directed Arthur to put forward a proposal for paying them a “substantial sum” in damages. Arthur now has seven days from the receipt of this legal notice – a copy of which has also been sent to Cricket South Africa and the ICC – to respond.

Yorkshire launch the Clydesdale Bank 40 with record stand

A round-up of matches from the opening round of the Clydesdale Bank 40 where there were wins for Yorkshire, Durham, Surrey, Sussex, Leicestershire, Warwickshire, Gloucestershire, Somerset and Middlesex

25-Apr-2010Andrew Gale and Jacques Rudolph both scored unbeaten centuries as Yorkshire thrashed Essex by 10 wickets to kick off the Clydesdale Bank 40 competition at Chelmsford. Responding to a total of 232 for 9, the visitors romped home with 4.1 overs to spare to inflict the heaviest defeat suffered by Essex in a limited overs match. The previous record was also against Yorkshire, by nine wickets at Headingley in 1982. Gale, in recording his first century in limited overs, finished with 125 that came off 115 balls and included 12 fours and three sixes. Rudolph contributed 101 from 102 balls with the help of 13 boundaries. Their partnership represented their highest for any wicket in one-day league cricket.Surrey skipper Rory Hamilton-Brown hit 92 to lead his side to a thrillingtwo-wicket victory over Lancashire with one ball to spare at Whitgift School. Lancashire had set Surrey a formidable target when Stephen Moore, playing in his first one-day game since joining them from Worcestershire, led them to atotal of 290 for 6 with 118 off 96 balls.Hamilton-Brown, who had never reached fifty in his 37 previous one-day games, responded by sharing a rousing opening partnership of 133 in only 15 overs withSteven Davies. Davies had made 59 off 43 balls with three sixes and seven fours when he played on heaving at Tom Smith but Hamilton-Brown, in his first one-day game as captain, kept Surrey on course in a second-wicket stand of 49 with Usman Afzaal.A blistering innings of 141 by Jacques Du Toit and a sensational spell of bowling from seamer Wayne White helped Leicestershire to a 47-run victory over Nottinghamshire at Grace Road. South Africa-born Du Toit smashed three sixes and 14 fours as the Foxes totalled 282 for 6, with Will Jefferson also hitting a quick-fire half-century against his former county. The Outlaws made a whirlwind start to the run-chase with Hashim Amla and Alex Hales putting on 96 in 13 overs, but then White claimed career-best figures of 6 for 29 – including three wickets in four balls – as the visitors crashed to 235 all out in 37 oversHampshire produced a pitiful batting display against a second-string Durham attack to lose their opening Clydesdale Bank 40 match by 149 runs at the Riverside. Replying to 264 for 6, which looked little better than par for the pitch, the visitors were all out for 115.Half-centuries from Nick Compton and James Hildreth were enough to help Somerset to a 38-run win over Glamorgan in Cardiff. When Somerset defended their 224 for 5 from their 39 overs they were indebted to Alfonso Thomas, who took three for 27 in 7.1 overs and was also responsible for a key run out and a catch as Glamorgan were dismissed for 186 with 11 balls remainingJames Franklin’s first one-day century inspired Gloucestershire to a 51-run win over Derbyshire in the opening Clydesdale Bank 40 fixture at Bristol. The New Zealand all-rounder responded to his new position as opener by hitting 133 off 121 balls, with 10 fours and three sixes, as his side ran up 230 for 5 after losing the toss. Alex Gidman (35) and Chris Taylor (32) offered good support. Steve Kirby (3 for 44) then took two early wickets to reduce Derbyshire to 31 for 2 and, despite 37 from Chris Rogers and 41 from John Sadler, the visitors were restricted to 179 all out. It was an important win for Gloucestershire, beaten at home in their first two County Championship games of the season. Batting frailty in those matches led to the experiment of promoting Franklin up the order and he responded with a superbly-paced innings.Warwickshire’s England batting stars Jonathan Trott, Ian Bell and Jim Troughton all hit half-centuries to steer the Bears to a six-wicket win over injury-hit Kent in their Clydesdale Bank 40 match at Canterbury. Chasing Kent’s moderate total of 246 for 6 at a shade more than six an over, Warwickshire romped to their target with 13 balls to spare courtesy of Bell’s excellent 88, a workmanlike 54 by Trott and an unbeaten 56 from Troughton off only 51 deliveries.Former New Zealand international Iain O’Brien ensured Middlesex got their campaign off to a winning start by ripping through Northamptonshire in a low-scoring game at Trent Bridge. The 33-year-old seamer claimed figures of 4 for 41 inside seven overs at Wantage Road to help skittle out the Steelbacks for a mediocre total of 146. Only David Sales offered any resistance hitting a 75-ball 56 as Middlesex set about making up for Saturday’s thrilling County Championship loss between the two sides. Panthers pair Gareth Berg and Dawid Malan made light work of the chase with unbeaten scores of 43 and 31 respectively to seal a seven-wicket victory inside 33 overs.Sussex launched their one-day season with a five-wicket victory over Worcestershire in a successful return to New Road where they won the old Pro40 League at the end of last season. James Kirtley removed three top-order batsmen in an over as the home side struggled to make 144 for 9 and Sussex edged home by five wickets despite a similar burst by Chris Whelan.

Gold makes Paratici ‘rebuild’ claim at Spurs

Writing on Twitter, relaying his piece for football.london, reliable reporter Alasdair Gold has shared the latest transfer news out of Tottenham in a promising update.

The Lowdown: Spurs set for busy window?

As per many English sources, Tottenham boss Antonio Conte and transfer chief Fabio Paratici don’t plan on dwindling in the winter January window.

Indeed, London World reporter Rahman Osman claims that the Italian boss is ‘working on some deals’ behind the scenes as he wants to ‘bridge the gap’ between Spurs and top Premier League sides as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, Sky journalist Lyall Thomas says that the Lilywhites will ‘almost certainly’ do business this month as Gold now shares the latest on what Conte and Paratici’s plans are.

The Latest: Gold shares priorities for Conte and Paratici…

According to the reliable source, Conte has ‘four priority positions’, with his piece detailing they are the signings of a right-wing-back, left-sided central defender, centre-midfield player and forward.

Taking to Twitter, he shared his article for football.london, whilst also stating:

“A piece on the four priority positions I understand Antonio Conte wants strengthening within his squad. Obviously other unexpected opportunities can arise with players coming on the market or leaving Spurs, but Paratici will try to start the rebuild now.”

The Verdict: Promising claim…

It’s safe to say Tottenham’s ‘rebuild’ has been long overdue, with former boss Mauricio Pochettino claiming they were in need of a ‘painful’ one near the end of this tenure.

As such, this latest Gold update comes as a promising one with Conte and Paratici now eyeing key additions in a plethora of important Spurs positions.

Who they manage to sign in a difficult winter window remains to be seen, but this January looks set to be Tottenham’s most eventful in recent memory.

Ayling and Bamford set for Leeds U23 return

Key Leeds United duo Luke Ayling and Patrick Bamford will feature for the club’s under-23s on Monday evening, according to Marcelo Bielsa, whose press conference comments were relayed on Twitter by journalist Phil Hay.

The Lowdown: Leeds miss key duo

The Whites have had a season to forget so far, sitting 17th in the Premier League after securing a ninth-place finish last time around.

Part of their struggles have been down to injuries, with both Ayling and Bamford long-term absentees having not featured since September.

The duo were vital figures last season, starting 75 out of 76 league games between them, and their absences have hurt the team badly in the early weeks of 2021/22.

The Latest: Bielsa provides positive update

It looks as though Ayling and Bamford could be back in the fold in the near future, though, following an update from Bielsa.

Hay took to Twitter during the Leeds manager’s press conference as the Argentine claimed that the pair will feature for the u23s away to Manchester City on Monday night.

The journalist tweeted: “Bielsa talking pre Palace – Ayling and Bamford will play with the 23s this evening.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-25/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=“none”]

The Verdict: Huge boost for Whites

This is an enormous boost for Bielsa, just as Leeds are about to embark on a busy December with six league fixtures in the month.

Granted, it may take a little time for Ayling and Bamford to find their feet again after two-and-a-half months out, but their mere presence on the pitch may lift those around them, and their mooted return to under-23 action comes as a big step in their respective recoveries.

The Whites are in danger of getting into a genuine relegation scrap, but Ayling’s leadership and Bamford’s end product – he scored 17 league goals in 2020/21 –  have the potential to turn their season around.
